Amazing to see a machine of this age still going strong. I had the WFF2001 back in March 1999, when I worked in a Co-Op electrical store. It was discontinued and had a massive discount on the price. Best machine I ever owned. Ending up giving it away two years later as I moved house and what with this being one of only a handful of washing machines which has the door hinged on the right & my luck being what it is, I couldn’t get the door open in the new location and bought a Bosch Maxx which opened on the left.

The Maxx model lasted almost 3-and-a-half years before the brushes wore out in 2004. The machine was covered by an extended warranty and was written off & replaced with a virtually identical machine as they insisted the motor was no good. With the next machine the warranty lapsed, so this time I made sure I changed the brushes at three years old so as not to wear out altogether. By this time I had set up a domestic cleaning service and was using the washing machine on a semi-commercial level, so much so I bought another washing machine so as to share the work. Second lot of brushes wore out sooner than I thought and like the first machine, they took the motor with it. So that was that.

Over the last 15 years I have since owned (new & 2nd hand) Hoover, Hotpoint, Daewoo, Samsung, Whirlpool, Zanussi, and Bosch machines, as well as having used a plethora of machines in peoples homes. I can honestly say I of all of them I never have any that washed as well as the Zanussi Aquacycle, followed by any of the Bosch. The Samsung and Daewoo machines were, in my opinion, dire beyond all words, on many levels. The Samsung was given to me by someone who no longer needed it and has sat in my garage in storage for two years. I think it’s horrid.

Although longevity is often talked about, I have noted that in the homes I clean, people go through all types and brands of appliances at different rates, for whatever reason. I have noted also that many appliances don’t seem to have on-going issues like they used to, rather they seem to work consistently for a few years then just die. Back in my time at the Co-Op we often seemed to be calling engineers out to the same customers over & over again.

For me, I value performance and reliability over longevity. I would not like an appliance which performed poorly for years and years, and / or broke down a lot. I like one that works well for a decent period and then stops. The strangest fault I ever had was on a Hoover where the concrete blocks shattered and fell off the outer drum. I’ve never heard of that happening before.

    Hello Dave

Many thanks for your reply. I tried this, and it empties just as you’d expect. Once I had drained the sudsy water earlier on, all was well too. Looking down into the hole in the soap unit with the drawer out, there doesn’t seem to be a lot between the out drum and the drawer. What I’m trying to say is the drum seems very high up. When full of laundry, I’m thinking when the machine spins, there’s not much space for the water to go to. But of course, I’m also thinking the machine was designed to be used as it is being.

    Re: Hoover VHV680C door issue

Well further to my last message, I managed to find the time to take the lid off the dryer. First thing I noticed is that the entire insides are THICK with grey fluff and no way can that be my fault as I am forever cleaning the filter and the chute to the vent hose as the slightest build up of fluff means the dryer will not dry to completion.

Second thing, the micro switch on the interlock is burnt to a crisp, so much so that one of the cables to it just fell away from the spade terminal it was attached to. But most worrying of all is the pile of scorched fluff all around the switch – is this how tumble dryer fires can start? :eeek:

I have ordered the new part from this very website, for which many thanks, but I am clueless as to how I am going to reconnect the charred cable which now has no spade connector. Can anyone help? Thanks again for reading.

That’s super, thank you. I will look at this again when I know the number.

    Re: Hotpoint WMA54P

Thank you both for this. I remember well the WMA range coming out in late 2000 to replace the WM series as I was still working for the Co-Op at that time, in an electrical store. In 2001 there was an updated range of WMA models, and again in 2002. All looked the same (except for the introduction of the raised Hotpoint logo on a blue background on the last range) and I know Hotpoint had been having dreadful issues with drum bearing failure across the first two ranges. But then I left the store in 2002.

This Hotpoint I am asking about is one which came after that, with a more square door and slightly different program dial, so I was thinking about 2003. I don’t actually own the machine yet (I have purchased it blind as it is part of a deal of some other things I want from a house clearance, but I do know it works as I know the person who owns it, he just can’t recall when he bought it) so I don’t have the serial number. It’s in amazing condition for it’s age, having being owned by two OAP’s since it was new. I don’t suppose it’s had much use. I got three wardrobes, a 6 month old fridge, and this washer for £75 the lot, so I really am not complaining. The washer can sit in the garage as a spare until I need it.

    Thank you both again.

Thank-you Dave. I appreciate this and will do that when I can. In the meantime, is there a reason why I cannot carry on using the machine, do you think?

    TIA
