ParticipantRe: Recommendations for a washer/dryer please.
Hi All,
I appreciate that these posts are nearly 6 months old so I thought I would check if the information still holds – plus another couple of Q’s.I’ve got an old warhorse (Hotpoint) washer that I’m thinking about repairing (again – it’s 15 years old!) but just in case I can’t repair it we went to John Lewis today to take a look at the price a new one.
Weighing everything up and reading your recommendations I must say that I was tempted by a Siemens WXLM148A. This is currently at £399 but for a limited time they are including 5 years’ warranty – parts and labour. Sounds good to me – but is this really a good deal? How much is the extra warranty really worth and would I be better spending £100 less on a Bosch with only 2 years’ warranty????? 😕
Lastly – after the 5 years of warranty…. if the brushes in the motor wear out – can I change them or is it one of these jobbies where you have to replace the whole motor? Am not especially interested in throwing the whole motor away when it’s only the brushes that are worn out. 🙁
Ta in advance for all advice

Penguin45.I think it had just drained the wash water and was doing one of the intermediate quick spins – before it was due to fill up with rinse water.

Cleaned out sump, gave it a couple of 40C washes with a known brand biological detergent (no clothes), then gave it a 95C “maintenance” wash – (heater definitely working). We use biological powder now and clothes much cleaner – complete success.
Thank you all
Just need to keep and eye on daughter’s eczema – so far so good

This is all really smart stuff chaps. Thank you – you’ve got me thinking.
We switched to a non-biological detergent because my eldest daughter suffers quite badly from eczema – bio detergents seemed to make it worse. That was 4 or 5 years ago. There’s a good chance with all these blooming kids we have now (3) that the machine is clogged with some fat. A couple of washes with a good biological detergent might help to clear the fatty build ups in there. Lipases in the biological detergents should do that job (good idea to put in your sink drainpipe every now and again too btw).
Also, I will definitely try the 90C maintenance wash to clear any debris.
We use a bulk detergent from CostCo or Macro – perhaps not the best. My wife has gone out to buy a known brand – will report back.
Will also test the heating as you suggest – thanks. However, I believe that it is heating fine.
Thanks again – will ket you know how I get on.

Q: “Have you changed detergent, what temperature are you washing on, do you use the economy button ?
Depending on the type of pump fitted it could be an intermittant pump failure. If the pump has a visible plastic fan then it should be OK if it is running, if it does not have a fan then this type of pump is prone to seizing with age and wear.”
A: Same detergent, 40 or 60 degrees. Problem seems to be getting steadily worse. Program cycle finishes OK. We never use the Economy button (that means it doesn’t heat its own water right?)
Where is the pump located on this machine?
Thanks for the help so far – useful stuff.
Cheers

ParticipantRe: Hotpoint Mistral FF92 fridge problems
Malcs
I appear to have fixed my FF92 over the w/e by replacing the evap and freezer thermistors (http://www.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/modules.p … pic&t=9851).
I am not an engineer but here’s a spot of advice that would have helped me out during the fitting of the evap thermistor. Assuming all FF92s are the same:
With the power off, remove the internal housing at back of freezer compartment (8 screws). You then need to wriggle out the polystyrene panel (that holds the freezer thermistor) and then you are presented with an aluminium panel that covers the evaporator. You need to get this out of the way to get to the evap thermistor. TAKE CARE This panel is connected to a series of reasonably delicate electrical stuff (told you I wasn’t an engineer!) which is essentially fixed to the back of this panel and the wires are threaded through various loops in the evaporator. Also if you have any ice build up then all of the above wires could be enased in ice. Thaw it out (if required) then move the aluminium panel as if you are opening a door towards you with it hinged on the right hand side – that way you shouldn’t damage any of those wires. Then you can leave the wires connected and prop up the aluminium panel while you change the evap thermistor.
Hope this helps

Cooling fan at the bottom is working fine – have already checked (should’ve said that in my original post – apologies) 😳
Hair dryer and silicone tip sounds like a good one – thanks.
All I have to do is locate the thermistors in the unit. Am I right in thinking that in the FF92 you take out all the drawers in the freezer compartment, remove the panel and they’re behind there?
I also read some posts here about a potential problem with the baffle in the fridge that allows/prevents the air from circulating in the fridge part. Can anyone comment on these tests I tried yesterday morning/last night?
With the fridge at ambient, I detached the housing that holds the baffle & light from the inside of the unit but propped it up and left it attached electrically. This leaves the air input to the fridge coming staright in – not going through the baffle. Then I turned the unit back on and left it while I went to work. The baffle appeared to be open at this point. I don’t know how much it is meant to open but I would say it was open about half an inch. When I returned from work the fridge was at a normal 4C and the baffle was closed. I re-attached the housing last night and again, closed the door and left it overnight. This morning I had a temperature of 14C. To me this would suggest a bafffle problem but it did appear to be open and closed at the right times. 😕
The plot thickens…
