ParticipantAlexandra Higginbottom sorry. £50 per call regardless (call out or job…they pay for parts). I thought it was worth a punt. All within 5 mile radius…

ParticipantDon’t go near them. They approached me and Ive been to 4 jobs for them. First blocked waste pipe, second glass in dishwasher drain pump, third customer refused repair because damaged during delivery and 4th I identified fault (concrete weight had broken so ordered one on their system, while still waiting to be paid for first 3. Just found out, by contacting customer as was told Tuesday part was in stock, ANOTHER ENGINEER had been and completed job…. still no money from them (£50 per call). If you had the same call as me, you will be approached on phone by Jonathan and Alexandra Higginson will be your “work contact”. I wish you luck

ParticipantRe: 0800 Repair
0800repair…leave em to it. It aint gonna hurt us. They’ll be gone soon. The REAL engineers like most of us on here will still be around. ENGINEERS is the clue, not part fitters. Let em have their day , the customers will come running back when they get ripped off once (£65 call out and asking them to wait 8 weeks for parts???? not gonna happen).
I seen 1 in southend ,gotta laugh at the van but it is noticable lol (where i am). It won’t last people are not stupid and do see through internet garbage.
PLUS £25K upfront to be a part of it??? are they MAD.
I mean wot would you get for a module repair from them. 8 weeks wait?? or a very happy customer?Gavpo

iadom wrote:I have worked on my own for almost 30 years. There are odd occasions when I regret it, but not that many. I don’t work any longer hours than when I was at Hotpoint except for working Saturday mornings every week. We used to do Saturday morning calls every third or fourth week at Hotpoint.
I earn more money than some of my friends and much less than others who possibly don’t work as hard for it, thats just the way it is, some of them hate every minute of their time at work, I certainly do not. I find that doing a variety of different machines a challenge to the old grey matter which at my age is fading fast and needs to be stimulated. 😉 it helps to keep me on my toes and the bottom line is that as I am self employed I can actually choose what I do or do not repair. I do make a decent living, not exceptional but comfortable.
I will admit that I do not take anything like enough holidays but that is entirely due to personal reasons and nothing at all to do with the job.
Pensions, sick pay, holiday pay etc do have to be considered but everyone has to pay for them in one way or another. 😉
I am not under constant stress,I have no mountains of paperwork, I do not give my mobile number to any customers and keep them at arms length in the evenings/weekends via my answerphone. Non payers are a PITA but in all honesty I have had less than 15 or 20 in thirty years and I have every one of them locked away in my memory bank. 😉
Even though I go out to my first call before 7.30 am every morning it is my choice to do so, I am not compelled by anyone other than myself. I know that if I wanted to take a day off or start an hour later I can do so without having to ask anyone else for permission, ( the fact that I never do is another matter altogether 🙂 )
Believe it or not I still enjoy driving, I like ‘fixing’ things, meeting loads of different people, some complete ass holes, some dirty & smelly but the vast majority, nice decent folk just trying to get along.
Being self employed is not an easy option, far from it but if you do make a success of it, even in a small way like I have you can look in the mirror and say “I bloody well did this, no one else”. 8)
Jim.
Well said Jim I agree whole heartedly

ParticipantRe: Whirpool AWO/D5706 dead!
Hi all
Board repaired ok(Cheers Martin spot on).Found Maplins had 3watt 22 ohm wirewound resistors in stock so no need to cut the casing The CPC one as Martin says you need to cut a piece out the case as they have extended legs on them. Thats definatley one to remember.Actually make it a job rather than a call out charge. (This was an AWO/D5547)Thanks again Martin
PS Dont know what you charged but I took the board away repaired it and charged £70 for the job…..sound fair??

ParticipantRe: Whirpool AWO/D5706 dead!
hi all. got one of these machines to do at the mo.you are right about the cost of the boards..bl**dy ridiculous. Can get whole machine for price of pcb….masterpart selling the equivalent machine for £150+vat and the board is £160 +vat.
But am interested in this 22 ohm resistor. If it can be repaired that will be great. Is it definatley 22 ohm not 220 or 22k? as cant find anybody that makes one. Do you remember the colours on it?and can you help with a picture or rough idea of location of it
Thanks in advance Gav -
