Re: Hotpoint FFA40X – Lights on no-one at home!

Ok so weekend’s here and I spent a few minutes probing about and researching. Compressor is ACC HYK12AA and the spec sheet is on-line.. http://www.the-acc-group.com/ACCDocs/152.pdf The coil readings I made match the spec and my PTC resistance is reading 18 Ohms against 14 on the spec. I’m getting 240VAC at the common connector and neutral buzzes out as expected

So question is can a compressor go ‘phut’ with coils still in spec? Or maybe a run capacitor fault? Strange thing is couldn’t see a cap although it is shown in the circuit sticker on the back of the unit.

    Cheers

Ah yes I have already looked for the replacement PTC/O-load and as you suggest it’s not coming up on any of my searches. I might try a universal item at some point as I hate throwing stuff into landfill – meantime looks like a need to get a new FF to keep the household happy. Cheers

    Hi K

Thanks for the reply – do you reach that conclusion from the coil readings? BTW I also checked each terminal for short to earth and they were OK. Presumably a duff compressor mean beyond economical(or sensible) repair..

Ok so measured the compressor coils – that came in at 12.5 and 17.5 and total 30 Ohms. The PTC appeared to have a short across it when cold (I think I probed the right terminals) – this wouald all appear to be ok.. I have yet tested it live so maybe something else is cutting it out..

    Any thoughts?

    Ben,

Sad to say that responses here are few and far between..

I once had an issue of a cocktail stick stuck in a pump impellor which caused a similar fault – wouldn’t drain- but yours sounds more like a controller issue – maybe. Just decided to sling my 10 year old slimline for this reason.
    See above..

    Good luck

I think I isolated the fault to the main plastic encased pcb.
examined it for wobbly joints but nada. Put it back together and now properly nadgered. Not worth a 120 + VAT for new pcb on a ten year machine so ordered a new machine (principally to keep Mrs quiet) – not happy with the outcome but what can one do.. ?

Re: Smeg DWF409 – suspected door switch

    Update –

OK checked the door switch (Bitron type S16) and all seems Ok.
Thinking about it also this couldn’t really be causing the power-cut issue as the mains button LED also extinguishes when
the unit was stopping part through a programme. Banging on the
front panel though does ‘bring it back alive’ so a loose connection or dry solder joint somewhere I imagine.

Strange thing is that once it ‘gets going’it’s usually ok until the end of the program..

.. not sure where to look next – the feed to the switch I guess. 😐

Ok well looks like the broken cocktail stick was the culprit – who’d have thought..

BTW I guessed at the connections back to the softener and nothing went pop. Ran a prewash for a test and all seemed to go Ok. So fingers crossed.

Just thought I would post the result for future reference..

    Cheers

Re: SMEG DWF409 – Hmmm UPDATE

Ok So I started to undo some screws and got access to the drain pump at the front under the plinth.

Managed to get it out (broke a lug in the process – grrr) and accidentally
pulled two connections from what I think is the water softener. One has two white wires and one has a single orange wire. Trouble is I don’t know
which connects on top spade and which on bottom spade…

    .. anyone ?

Anyway found a cocktail stick in the pump impeller… so maybe just maybe there’s progress.

    Cheers

PS ‘voltstick’ shows orange is live when power is on. Since connectors are not polarised could this simply be a switch and thus not important which goes where ? Just a thought..
