I have used ceramic in the past and hate them as there is little control over heat: ‘it’s impossible to turn down the heat quickly’ is my main bugbear.

Im a little confused here, when you refer to “ceramic” do you actually mean a solid hotplate?? (ie slightly raised grey stone looking rings)

Ceramic/Halogen hobs are very similar, both heat sources are located under glass, Ceramic uses a quick heat radiant ring, where halogen uses an almost instant heat from the light supported by a radiant ring. Both are extremely controllable/responsive

Solid uses an element built into the solid surface which heats up very slowly and cools even slower, they are mostly found on basic cookers/hobs and are not very controllable at all.

Induction is expensive and needs cartain types of pans….

I would recommend a good quality ceramic hob with a couple of halogen zones built in. Zanussi make a nice 60cm slot in one

Anonymous wrote:I recently bought a Hotpoint “ULTIMA” EW86X cooker, In the space of two weeks Im now on my 5th one, 1st 2nd 3rd and 4th came with serious damage (despite undamaged outer packaging!) on the 4th cooker the electrical connector unit on the rear came away in the electricians hand (240V connection unit held to cooker by 2 flimsy plastic clips!!!!) So all in all, it took 5 deliveries to get ONE that was perfect. Makes me wonder if they are leaving the Hotpoint factory in that condition, no wonder there are so many complaints and horror stories about Hotpoint/Indesit or any other Merloni owned brand. In my humble consumer opinion, Hotpoint design, construction and after sales care are ALL utterly ABYSMAL and pathetic. Their motto is “DESIGNED FOR THE REAL WORLD” what a joke…..Hotpoint don’t have a clue what a real world actually is, if they did they would sort their business practices out and stop claiming to be something they most definetely are not!

I will never again purchase a product manufactured by Merloni/Indesit Company

I advise anyone else to stay clear of any of the following brands HOTPOINT, CREDA, INDESIT, ARISTON, SCHOLTE’S they are all owned by Merloni and they are basically all the same appliances with different badges which equals the same horrendous levels of after sales care and non existent service…think twice before you buy!

I have had good service over the years from Zanussi and AEG (Electrolux group) and I found Whirlpool to be fine when I needed them.

If you would like to see for yourself…..

Compare things like build quality….for example, I was looking at condenser dryers recently ….Zanussi dryers appeared solid, knobs, clips door etc all pretty solid….Hotpoint dryers in comparison, cheap plasticy wobbly bits, flimsy door etc…speaks volumes doesn’t it!

Re: Kenwood double oven CKB 300

I bought an “Elba” cooker few years back, also made by Delonghi…it had the same problem, also the cooker was stainless steel….except that Delonghi put a coating on it to “fingerproof” it, this coating did not like heat and peeled of near any hot spots on the oven/grill doors

I believe Delonghi still make cookers with all these “features” they are branded under the names Kenwood, Elba, and Prestige.

Some other “features” which you may wish to look out for on these cookers are….

No catalytic liners in ovens, only enamel…nightmare to clean

No cooling fans in Grills (closed door grilling on these cookers)

knobs get really hot due to no cooling fan.

Closed door grilling can be tricky until you get used to it….several grill pan fires I had!

Cannot clean above grill elements (no removable liner)

And the thing is they are not cheap cookers……..best compare to other similar priced ones with better features

    Re: HOTPOINT EW86X Cooker probs!

UPDATE May 05th Curry’s arrived today with TWO replacement cookers, first one looked ok, but the electrical connection unit at the back fell off, seems its only held on by 3 flimsy plastic clips (Electrical safety Issue!!)

Refused that cooker and tried the second one which works fine, although I have to say that I am UNIMPRESSED with the overall quality of brand new factory sealed Hotpoint cookers….to have this many damaged, faulty items in a row is surely an indication of a major failure in quality control at Hotpoint’s factory?

I would also wonder how many of these power supply modules are hanging loose or broken in other Hotpojt cookers! ( I would advise getting your Hotpoint cooker checked !!) as they seem extremely flimsy even when properly attatched, and if it does fail the electrical contacts will come into contact with the main metal parts of the cooker….flash bang sizzle!

I rang Hotpoint to tell them what happened, and disinterested is an understatement to their attitude!

thats the first, and last Hotpoint product ever coming into this house!
