    Thanks for that. I suspect you are right. I stood in front of the machine as it reached the emptying/spin phase, and heard an ominous click as if a component (ie – the pump) had been switched on but refused to work. Will dismantle and check it out.

    Thanks to all for your replies. Re siphoning, I suspected this first of all, and physically removed the hose from the down spout. As the rinse cycle moved to the agitation phase I got a free shower as the machine pumped the water all over me.

    On the option involving cooling down, this sounds more promising. However, I initially realised there was a problem when the machine remained stuck in the same position for more than 1 hour. I have read that a thermistor can fail, and convince the programmer that the water is too hot. This then leads to the machine contantly pumping & filling in the vain hope that the water temperature will cool down. Have I understood this correctly?
