the sump hose between the water filling chamber on the left handside of d/washer and the sump usually gets blocked also the chamber itself gets blocked bosch have improved this chamber as it is a knows problem. the lack of water sometimes caused the heater to fail due to the heater coming on when there is no enough water in the machine.

I sounds to me like the heater is open circuit, this is accessed via the underneath panel, it is held on be 2 torq t15 screws, you may also need to remove the front kickplate panel this is the panel below the door.
