ParticipantRe: Samsung RL39WBSW not cooling or freezing
I have a multimeter, what do I test? I assume on the heater I’m looking for something other than open circuit? For thermal fuses do I just check the resistance changes with temperature?

Thanks!
Any way to test it? Or shall I just bite the billet and order one?

Ok, I have an update, but firstly I’d like to thank everyone who took the time to respond to my post.
I took the panels off and found the main board (behind the buttons on the left?). There were no signs of burnt wiring, and the soldering on the relay was sound.
I saw the wiring flexing at the bottom of the door, I can see how that could cause the wires to fracture over time. Usually the wires break and the insulation remains intact, so instead of replacing them all I decided to leave well enough alone.
Without any obvious faults, I put it all back together and tried it. It’s now done four washes at full temperature, hasn’t done that for months.
I can only imagine that reseating the cables on the board has helped. Hopefully it’ll stay fixed!
So thanks again, I appreciate it.

Yes, I use rinse aid. Even if the tablets claim to contain rinse aid.
But the interior’s cold when it fails, can’t blame that on lack of rinse aid.

Thanks, I’ll do that. Where’s the circuit board? I can strip all the covers off but if you let me know where to start…

Thanks Martin, I appreciate your help on this one.

Last update today; tried a wash cycle, it goes through, then tries to spin, does a jump and stops. It’ll then repeat this for hours. So I turned it off, selected spin and it drained off and spun up to (what seemed like) the full 1400 rpm no problem and stopped normally.
I’m stuck. Does this mean the motor is ok? Not sure that’s good or bad…

Thanks again. Just checked the brushes, both fine, about an inch left.
But Tacho Generator? Is that the ring around the magnet opposite the pulley end? If so how do I test it? I have a multimeter but what/ where do I measure?
Just done a dry run, it spins up fine when empty, just fails with clothes in it (so not much good!) . Odd.

Just to clarify, the drum lurches violently when it tries to spin, so much so that it unhooked one of the springs that suspends the drum.
Is this down to the motor (brushes?) or is there another problem?

Thanks very much. Brushes went a couple of years ago, although that caused a different problem. I’ll whip them out and have a look.

Knackered motor? Could I scrape the carbon out of the armature or is it best to just replace?

ParticipantRe: Chest Freezer Power Consumption
Routers? I’ve got two, on 24/7. Maybe I’ll measure them, or better still, turn them off when not in use. The tv goes off now, not on standby. Then there’s the power shower; it’s hard wired, so hard to check. The skybox? It all adds up…

ParticipantRe: Chest Freezer Power Consumption
Well the meter is new, but I can only assume it’s accurate. The KW/h figure started at 0.6, then rose to 4 after 24 hours. Right now, it’s showing 8.4 KW/h after 50 hours. The instantaneous power reading is 180 W, so I guess the KW/h figure is cumulative. Am I on the right track?
Anyway, I think after taking the advice above the chest freezer is not the culprit. I’m paying £66 per month for electricity alone, which for a modest three bed terrace seems a bit high. Central heating/water is powered by gas. My brother has a much larger house and he spends £77 pm including two bathrooms with underfloor heating that he was told will cost a Pound a day, so knock £30 off that figure just for that.
We’ve got a young family, so the washing machine can run up to four times a day, but it’s less than a year old and is AAA rated. The dishwasher runs every day, but is AAA rated as well.
We’ve got an old tumble dryer which will be used less now the nice weathers here, but I’ll check that next. Oven and hob are electric. All bulbs are energy saving. I’m not sure what else I can do.
To be honest I’d convinced myself that the freezer was bleeding me dry, but that doesn’t seem to be the case.

Thanks Bryan, I’ll keep it and start measuring my other appliances.
But on a more general point, I’m having trouble with the power consumption maths. After 24 hours, my new meter is showing 4 KW/h. If electricity costs 8p per KW/h, is this 4×0.08=0.32p for a days running? Therefore 30×0.32=£9.60 per month? Is it that simple or am I missing something? There seems to be a higher rate for the first so many KW/h’s, so it seems hard to work out the exact cost of each appliance.
Feel free to give me the idiots guide…

Greg, thanks for all your help on this one, it really is appreciated.
The replacement heater is £70, you can get a three year old Bosch on ebay for £50 or less. So that’s what I’m doing. Shame, really, as I hate waste, and if Bosch supplied the heaters at a better price I could keep mine going for a few more years.
But anyway, thanks again.
Mike.
