ParticipantYes I did that on first installation and I have checked it since. However the water in the reservoir doesn’t taste salty now, so maybe the softener is using up the salt and just the indicator light isn’t working.
Today’s plan is to move this m/c to our holiday home in a soft water area where it won’t matter (in place of the SMS44 which is slow to fill – see thread 854983) and buy a new one for here, probably a SMS46IW10G as I remember you don’t think much of the cheaper models with plastic tubs!

ParticipantDon’t think so. Is there a good way to check seeing as it doesn’t have a float to measure the specific gravity? The water softener didn’t work even when I put more salt in anyway, so I have taken to using all-in-one tablets which do not give such good results as the water is very hard here.

ParticipantThanks Dave, I had forgotten about the safety shut off function but it was working OK when tested so I don’t think it is that,
I will take the valve apart again when we are not needing to use the dishwasher so much.
Even when it has succeeded in filling, the controller does not advance to start the wash or rinse cycle and has to be nudged. I am thinking perhaps there a pressure or level switch which determines when it moves on from the fill phase and is that is also faulty. Any thoughts on this?
TIA and happy new year, Chris

No, the SL2300 doesn’t come up in any spares listing I have checked so far either, though you might think Zanussi would have better records. It was bought for a flat I sold in 1982 so doesn’t owe us a lot!
If it’s low on gas or a worn compressor I guess it’s not worth repairing but I will be sorry to see it go.
Thanks, Chris

ParticipantThanks for yr prompt reply Dave.
I set up a test rig on the kitchen worktop, with valve connected to water supply and waste, mains to solenoid. (I am an electrical engineer by profession so am used to this kind of setup.)
Flow rate seemed OK after I had cleared the 3 pilot holes in the diaphragm (though there was no obvious blockage). IIRC these holes are smaller than the strainer in the supply pipe so it is possible they can have got blocked by debris the water supply, but perhaps you can say if there is another likely cause as it’s a lot of work to dismantle it all again and it didn’t really fix the problem anyway.
Thanks, Chris
