Every now and then, we get wind of some madcap thing people are doing, and this is one of them. Apparently, the idea of freezing liquid detergents into frozen “pods” is a thing these days.

For clarity and TLDR; this is bad, don’t do it!

From what we can tell this is a TikTok thing where people have been freezing liguid detergent in what appears to be ice cube trays, often with scent stuff (you don’t really need anyway) to make these little frozen pods.

We can understand the logic to a degree, but there’s a much simpler solution to the issue: don’t buy pods or measure the detergent you use correctly!

It seems that people have sussed that a lot of the pods they buy are overdosing or that they’re using too much liquid detergent so this seems to be one answer to those issues.

The problem is, it wrecks the cleaning ability of the detergent. They were never designed to be frozen (why would you?) and freezing them can cause damage to the ability that they have to clean.

It’s not just us saying this is a bad idea, one expert said:

“Cooling down the temperature will result in some of the components losing their solubility. This is generally not a big deal if the detergent is chemical-based, but if the detergent is bio-based and contains enzymes, this can damage the enzymes and reduce their efficacy.”

In other words, if you freeze the detergent, it won’t clean correctly.

Given that cleaning is kinda the point of detergent…
