THE future of the Indesit/Hotpoint washing machine factory in Bodelwyddan may be under review.

The company’s European Works Council will meet at their headquarters in Peterborough this Thursday.

It is understood the unions will be told that the future of the factory at Kinmel Park ““ which employs about 320 workers ““ will be under critical review, along with another site in Germany.

Indesit, which once employed about 1,800 workers at Bodelwyddan, laid off 67 workers just before Christmas 2007.

At the time the company said it wanted to reduce production from around 800,000 washing machines a year to 625,000 in 2008.

Indesit/Hotpoint is the biggest manufacturer and supplier of kitchen appliances in the UK and one of Europe’s largest producers of household appliances.

It has expanded massively in Poland in recent times, employing 3,000 there, leading to speculation that it may want to close production at more expensive sites such as Bodelwyddan.
