Numerous messages have spread over the Internet against the MCC (Mondragon Cooperative Corporation). The messages are calling for a boycott of the products of the companies that make up the MCC on the grounds that buying MCC products funds ETA. The MCC has decided to take the authors of this campaign to court. Next week it will be bringing criminal charges.
As most of the campaign has been waged over the Internet, the authors are anonymous but there is one signed by the Risa group, which is close to the PP. On its website there are unequivocal messages against MCC companies. On its home page the Eroski logo and the ETA anagram alternate with each other. The accompanying text says: “If you buy products from Eroski or the Fagor companies, ETA is preparing your death.” If you click on it, there are other similar messages. They refer to Eroski, Fagor, Caja Laboral (Euskadiko Kutxa) and Edesa, among others. Buying from them “funds ETA”, say the messages, which can be seen in an image with red letters dripping with blood.
Although it is not the first time such campaigns have been waged, the campaign has become more aggressive since the King of Spain visited the MCC’s headquarters in Arrasate (Mondragon, Gipuzkoa). He went there on December 9 to inaugurate a new Fagor plant. This campaign has turned even nastier since Arnaldo Otegi was bailed, because half of his 400,000 euro bail amount came from bank guarantees issued by Caja Laboral. On its Spanish-language web page the MCC outlines the group’s characteristics and explains why it is bringing criminal charges.
The MCC’s message runs: “The MCC has from time to time been the subject of despicable attacks by individuals who take advantage of the Internet’s anonymity to connect us with ETA’s funding; the group has even been accused of being a member of ETA.”
