One innovative artist has found a novel way of recycling disused kitchen appliances and celebrating the Queen and Prince Phillip’s diamond wedding anniversary – by combining the two.
Sculptor Ptolemy Elrington has created a statue of the Queen using a host of old appliance parts including bits of kettles, toasters, and even smoothie-makers, according to the Lincolnshire Echo.
The project was commissioned by Kenwood, who make a number of kitchen appliances including microwaves, to mark the joint celebration of its 60th birthday and the diamond anniversary of the royal couple.
According to the artist, the eight-foot statue, which was unveiled near London’s Tower Bridge this week, was “one of the most bizarre” artworks he had ever created.
“It was quite an unusual project, especially because [Kenwood] are a traditional company. It’s quite a brave move for them,” he told the newspaper.
Previously the artist has created sculptures using all manner of items including shopping trolleys and car parts.
