Production was disrupted by new strike action today at Electrolux unit AEG’s factory in Nuremberg, which is currently threatened with closure, works council chief Harald Dix said.

The protest is expected to last until 6 am tomorrow, and will prevent the production of 7,000 household appliances, trade union IG Metall said.

The employees are attempting to pressure AEG’s Swedish parent into making a quick decision over the future of the site, which employs 1,750 staff producing washing machines, dishwashers and dryers.

Electrolux announced last spring that it intended to close four sites in Europe to trim its high production costs.

A final decision on the site is expected at the end of the year, having been initially expected on Oct 24.
