Many people in the UK will not be aware of who or what Xiaomi (shau-mee) is and yet, it’s one of the largest companies in the world producing a vast range or products in multiple sectors, from toothbrushes to phones, to cars. They’re starting to make major appliances now as well.
Some time ago it was mooted that it was all too possible that Xiaomi would enter the appliance fray as they’ve pretty much done everything else, seriously look them up, they make such a vast range of products it’s unbelievable. And, then we hear the news that they have now launched a smart fridge in Malaysia.
On digging into it a bit, it turns out that the company intends to launch major appliances globally that will initially include fridge freezers, washing machines and tumble dryers. There’s no word on which regions will get these products or when, but Xiaomi is not a company to hang about, so we’d not be surprised if they landed in the UK in the next year or two.
We saw some things that showed the possibility of this last year, but it was flaky and could have been only for the local Chinese market; however, it seems now that a global push in appliances is going to happen.
More details when we get them.
+++UPDATE+++
We found an unboxing video of one of the first sold in Malaysia:

1. Haier (Hoover/Candy/Haier/OEM for some Logik, Argos etc)
2. Hisense (Hisense/Fridgemaster/OEM for some brands, including some entry level Bosch!)
3. Midea (Midea/Comfee/OEM for many in-store brands like Bush, Swan, Logik, Montpellier, Lec, IKEA + more)
4. Changhong (trades as ChiQ)
5. now Xiaomi and soon TCL?
From what I’ve seen Midea punches above its price point with decent build quality and finishing. Midea happens to own a compressor company (GMCC, originally Toshiba’s compressor division for industrial products) in most similar fridges AND a motor company used by most mass market washing machines (Welling). Smart move huh? Say what you like about China, but they know how to run successful businesses.
