ParticipantGot a phone call around 6pm last night, this guy got me off repairs@ apparently. 😀
Lives in Wokingham (19 miles away) and has a 2 year old Indesit SIXL145 and “….it sounds like an earthquake when it spins and clothes are covered in black marks!” I told him to sling it in the nearest skip or cruise into Comet and swap it for a Haier….bye!
7:30pm he’s back on the phone to me. He’s been in touch with his insurance company and they advise getting ‘a written report from a qualified engineer (sic) to concur the cost of repairs is uneconomical!’ His insurance company would NOT cover the cost of such a report but they advised he bear the cost then, armed with that information, contact the manufacturer direct claiming ‘not of merchantable quality!’
He was well up for doing this as apparently he’d been successful in complaining to B&Q over a faulty Hotpoint Tumble Dryer a few weeks back. 😕
The tragedy was that he wanted me to call today as he was at home because of the snow. So I simply told him where he could shovel it……… 😈
Anyone want a nice quick money maker in Wokingham today, no toolbox required? 😀

You should have just e-mailed him a quote and got him to pay you by paypal.
Could be the future way of doing things! 😆

I was joking; sort of.
But in reality, in such circumstances, I think I would risk putting in an estimate, quote even, for the cost of bearings + inner drum replacement (or welded drum if appropriate). I don’t think the insurance company would be very likely to take me to court, even if they did bother subsequently getting a second opinion and I turned out to be wrong.
The only way I would consider I had come unstuck is if they asked me to do the b****y job! But then I could just say I was too busy!

Surely, coming from repairs@, a prime candidate for an ISE.

I hardly think a guy that buys his cheap junk appliances from B&Q is going to shell out £900 on anything with a 13amp plug on the end!

thats a new one, estimates for repairs on appliances with out seeing it, thats just wrong!
You read something bad about this trade every day on here, engineers without proper test equipment, engineers that steal customers property out of pumps and now engineers who would give estimates with out seeing the machine! I wonder how many of these “engineers” are members of trade assosiations? Or am i the odd one out?December 16, 2010 at 11:39 am #337748allan73
ParticipantRe: I should cocoa!
I seem to get asked more and more to give estimates over the phone these days, but never do.
Could it be these people want to avoid my modest call out charge 💡

Most of us can see the jokes but smile wryly.

i think you think they are joking, i think not especially when you go through other topics and see that they dont have test equipment etc.

DrDill does have a point and whilst it is true many comments here are to some degree ‘tongue in cheek’, often the repetitious posts year on year yield the truth that many uphold in their daily business activities.
That’s not to condone stealing customers belongings or failing to use proper test procedures or even giving written BER reports on appliances never inspected. It’s merely lending support to DrDill’s conclusions toward this our trade that in general there is equal measure of all sorts within.
But hey, isn’t any profession able to reach that same conclusion?
DrDill wrote:I wonder how many of these “engineers” are members of trade assosiations?
Are you suggesting all members of trade associations are free from the above mentioned indiscretions?

Giving Quotes for fitting specific parts I suppose is ok but the problem is when you quote for, say a belt on a hopoint VTD00 only to discover the rear bearing & shaft are shot 😡
Door seals on washers however are probably a safe bet 8)
