Something that bugs me a little with that watchdog programme is that the BBC hands over £300 cash of license payers’ money knowing that it will probably not be seen again and will go straight into the rogue’s pocket. Might be a small amount in programme making terms but it’s the principle.
(Or have I remembered wrong and they got it back?)
Makes me even more glad I don’t pay a license.

I give them my full moral support. 😀
Obviously we need them to chase such rogues around and keep them in business by handing them cash.

What do you guys think about the idea of a ‘Trading Licence’ then?

Isn’t there enough red tape already?

Someone would use another licence as a revenue gathering facility for which we in the trade, who would actually have to pay for such a licence, would gain nothing.

That’s right. Any new rules will only affect honest traders as the rogue ones will just ignore them. At the moment Britain is fairly liberal in terms of legislation imposed on those who want to start their own business, particularly those who become sole traders. This makes it possible for people like me to relocate to another part of the country and still earn a living without expensive training or membership fees to some money grabbing trade organisation. I chose this trade but I could just as easily have become a window cleaner or chimney sweep or landscape gardener.
I’m thinking of moving to France for a couple of years but I know it will be much more difficult to start a business there.October 21, 2010 at 12:14 pm #332967kwatt

Absolutely correct and why I don’t ever advocate it.
All you do is, like CORGI then Gas Safe, cost the legitimate businesses more.

A ‘licence to trade’ need only be a nominal fee per person and much like a local store has to have a license to sell tobacco and alcohol. A sub-contractor needs a license to work on a building site, plumbing, sparking and so on. I’m not talking the likes of Corgi/Gas Safety Register where you have to do the training, get certified before you’re accepted plus the regular revamped regs that come with it and all the trauma and expense that comes attached.:rolls:
I merely refer to a simple ‘operators licence’ the only prerequisite perhaps a CRB check and the need for adequate PL insurance. Renewable every year at your local Post Office.
No licence, no trade, and authorities like TS can issue warnings and revoke licences giving them more teeth to bite you with.
Rogue traders will dissappear overnight if such a system existed wouldn’t they?Perhaps the idea of police state isn’t so bad after all? Just round up the rogues against the wall at dawn… 😈

KeymasterNa Martin, it’d become a pseudo quango and it wouldn’t stop determined rogues. For all we know Mr Bramell may well have insurance, an address and might even be able to produce a multimeter or a CRB ticket, who knows but none of which makes him a legitimate business.
If you want to go down the road of a legal requirement you either go the whole hog or not at all. I favour the latter.

Yep, it would seem their gas Engineers cant fit integrated diswashers very well.. £80 fee and all 😯
Had to laugh at the way they’ve got a pic of poor scruffy little Clive hung permanently in the studio ‘rogues gallery’ now 🙂
Almost feel sorry for him, he must be unable to even go to his local now… hopefully 😉 -
