2 weeks ago i bought an indesit idl500 dishwasher from a well known catalogue for £240 Its been fine and washing well but after a few days all the plastic inside the dishwasher went pink. I called the catalogue and they say its to do with indesit and to phone them which i did. A girl said this can happen if you eat things like spag bog or tomato ketchup so i said so now i have to watch what i eat because it turns the plastic a funny colour? ive never had that with my old dishwasher…so i said im not happy and called the catalogue company again. They say they wont take it back because there isnt a fault and indesit have to say there is one so i called them again. This time the man on the phone said it wont harm your dishes but ALL our dishwashers go that colour. I asked him why this isnt mentioned when they advertise it or in their handbooks. I said im not happy and i dont want it. In so many words he said tough, thats what happens and im not going to do anything about it
So on Monday im going to trading standards as neither of the companies will take responsibilityDecember 4, 2005 at 7:05 pm #156719Penguin45

You’re being naive if you think that Trading Standards will do anything for you.
This is a simple case of misrepresentation. You will need to be prepared for the matter to go court if you’re going to get anywhere.
The first step is to write to the supplier, notifying them that you are rejecting the dishwasher because the lining is affected by food colouring. Explain that the manufacturer has said that this is a known problem, but you weren’t told about it at the time of the purchase, that you would not have purchased it if you had been told, and that you wish a full refund.
What happens next is down to you and the supplier, but if they don’t provide a refund, then you have the option of taking them to court.
Be civil at all times, and prompt in your action, and I will put money on the supplier giving you refund before it makes it into court. You may have to go as far as a court application before they take you seriously.

You’ll need to put that anger to one side in order to be successful in litigation – it will cloud your judgement. You may heard the expression “Don’t get mad, get even”.

The common causes of cutlery, crockery and even plastic coated baskets within a diswasher turning pink is purely and simply due to a chemical reaction taking place during the washing process and through no fault of the appliance. Commonly known as ‘silicate scum’ it often manifests itself mainly through using issufficient detergent. Silicate scum absorbs Iron and/or manganese from the incoming water supply and often colours dishes etc a light brown OR pink colour depending on the level of manganese.millymog wrote:

Accepting this argument and taking it a step further, perhaps one reason this may NOT have appeared in your previous diswasher is the level of softening the old machine gave against the new one?Older Hotpoint machines used softened water only during the main wash and final rinse process, whereas the new Indesit uses softened water at each and every stage throughout! Therefore greater attention needs to be given in ensuring the salt level is fully maintained (top-up regularly) Avoid liquid detergent and the later “4 in 1” tablets and ensure the Rinse aid dispenser is set correctly!
Frequent use of ‘Dishwasher Cleaning Tablets’ will also reduce the staining level (but not completely I’m afraid) If you continue in getting problems after applying all of the above recommendations, then I suggest you contact your local Water Company and insist they take water samples for laboratory testing and clarification before condeming your machine

Age old problem. Made worse by Spag-Bol, Chicken Tikka or lasagne. Red food coluring agents will affect some plastics but not others. Dispenser for example, but not the wheels & supports.
We used to find in all the Zanussi D/washers we owned only certain parts were affected. Now we have an AEG made in Germany and despite the filter etc. being grey, you can tell it is still tainted.
Hardly a thing worth getting stressed about. The machine will not be impaired by this, and the affected parts will probably outlive the rest of the product.

Its the principle of the matter
Why should i pay over £200 for a product, whether it be a dishwasher, washing machine or tent and after having it, not even 2 weeks, it discolours when my old one didnt? Its like buying a pair of curtains with a hole in the middle of them or they have discoloured. Great!!! they still work but you wouldnt settle for the flaws so why should i with the dishwasher?
And the fact the bloke on the phone said that ALL their dishwashers do this, why havent they put this information in any handbook? if they know this they should inform the customer so then its up to the customer whether or not they want to buy it..

I have done the salt bit, used the product they recommended but again like i said, thats not the point. I didnt have the choice whether i wanted a machine that turned pink when i used it and that is my main moan off lol

If you want any help/advice with the legal process, I can give you chapter and verse on Misrepresentation and the law of Contract. This isn’t professional legal advice you understand, just the benefit of my experience with suing companies who don’t deliver a reasonable product or service.
The most important thing is to act promptly. If you feel strongly about it, then write the letter to the supplier without delay. Also, keep a diary of notes about what you do, and always put all of your expectatations in writing so that they can later be seen by a court.

At the end of the day its a dishwasher that still washes dishes. Where is the litigation of “misrepresentation”. Its like buying a standard family car and taking it back saying that it was represented properly in the fact that it won’t beat a Maserati sports car.
I agree its not nice that the plastic disclours but its still doing the job it was intended to do.Greg

So youre telling me because something works and does its job, i should be happy with it?
Ok, what if you bought a car which worked but then the boot fell off? so you called the company and they say, “oh they all do that” are you supposed to be satisfied with that? The car still drives and works but minus a boot….
I think too many people “make do” these days.December 4, 2005 at 7:14 pm #156732Penguin45

There is a lot of difference between disclouration of a part and a component falling off.
I never said you should be happy I was merely pointing out the facts that would be taken into consideration if you took it further.
If it is only 2 weeks old and it has developed a “Fault “, the catalogue should sort it out and not pass the buck in all honesty.Greg
