As well as the NEED for certain programs to wash particular fabrics and the changes in consumer habits.
We rarely see complaints about damage to clothing from the older generations because, I suspect, that they care and look after things taking the time to wash thing properly. Classic example is wool, most older people would wash it by hand in the sink using a mild detergent.
Now, people don’t have the time, shove it in the washing machine as it’s supposed to magically know that it’s there, with standard detergent and it gets wrecked. The washer then gets the blame as being the culprit when it’s got nothing to do with it.
Meanwhile the older generation that don’t look at a lot of the labels on the new fabrics, largely as they are meaningless unless you know what they are and often too small, wash stuff incorrectly as well but, generally speaking, not as much.
So yeah Martin you are right, people do only want a machine with two programs on it but, that would actually be not fit for purpose as well as lead to damaged clothing.
But people also want the lowest possible energy use (then moan about the extended times), all the funky features (that most people never use), huge drum capacities (that are rarely used correctly wasting energy) and so on. Oh and, it has to cost less than ยฃ299 and come with a cast iron warranty that gives at least two years cover and a free replacement if it breaks.
In many ways it’s laughable as of course, given the demands, manufacturers and retailers simply provide what they are asked for the best that they can. If people don’t ask for the right thing and simply, as they seem to, seek the best spec at the lowest price then of course they will end up with a pile of rubbish.

You’ve summed it all up nicely there Ken. Little to add to that and I’d hate to ask you what you think the future will hold for the humble washing machine? It is plainly obvious the expression Built to dump holds true and that life expectancy has shortened dramatically. To be sure of an ever increasing demand, the ‘repairability’ factor outside the obligatory guarantee period has been skilfully eliminated. Much like with the small appliance market years back when irons, toasters and kettles were fixable long after the guarantee ran out. These days we simply throw them in the bin and buy new. Hardly a parallel example perhaps but major white goods are heading in the same direction.
But once the Chinese really take over the large appliance market then……….just like every small appliance has a label underneath that says “Made in PRC”…….most will carry the same label.

ARGHHHH!!!!! :eeek: The dreaded “but it takes so long”.
As well as “I only need a quick wash as it’s not what you call dirty”.
But oh, it is so. I run a professional housekeeping service. It is my job to iron some of this “not what you call dirty” laundry, after it’s had the obligatory eco wash. I wish I could find a way of telling people that their clothes stink. ๐ฅ
As you know from my previous posts, I’m washing at least twice a day. And even I don’t have a problem with long wash cycles. I just organize myself so that the washing is done when I’m around.
The real problem of course is that we consumers were never actually told that less water + less electricity = a need for a longer wash cycle. I refer back to Which?; they often single out long wash times as a negative aspect of certain washing machines. The point about older people knowing how to do things is well made. So much has been lost in translation in the last 30 odd years.

I kid you not…
About a year ago we had an ISE customer on complaining about the quick wash not being fast enough, I think they were sat with a stopwatch even although it is pretty clear that the programs are dynamic and work out the time themselves.
Anyway, turns out that this customer was commercial and I had to ask but was sorry I did, why are you using quick wash for commercial purposes?
They promptly informed us that they ran a B&B and did all the bed linen on a 40?C quick wash but they needed it to go faster to get more rooms done. They told us that most guests had only ever stayed a night and that the sheets weren’t dirty.
We were, frankly, horrified. Our skin was crawling at the thought. These people are supposed to be professional!
But it demonstrates just how much bad knowledge about how to wash things is out there.
The B&B refused to believe us and, so far as I am aware, are still using a quick wash to wash bed linen.
That demonstrated nicely how people refuse to use the machines correctly as, it is far from uncommon to come across such things.
As to the future Martin, that’s a whole other topic with a lot of speculation involved.

Crawling as it maybe, Ken, you and I both know this is the norm and not the exception. More is the pity. But then I suppose hot washing is ‘bad’ for the environment.
But what I don’t ‘get’ is how & why so many people want to wash fast & low temp so as to save the planet, but think nothing of leaving every last appliance on standby, using baths full of water, leaving heating & light on 24-7, and driving huge great cars. I know what I am talking about on this one; I see the appliances as I am cleaning, I wash the tide-marks from the bath, I sweat in the heat of the home as I do so. I work for some amazing, adorable people, but their eco-saving tendencies are somewhat distorted IMO. ๐

People have the choice to leave lights on, heating on etc, washing machines are as they are and the person just selects the wash cycle.

Another thing that affected this was the rise In insurance policy’s on machines being tied to manufactures. These has meant the the cost of repair is almost irrelevant as the they supply the parts so its cost not retail that they pay
I’m a firm believer in its how its used not what it’s cost, Iv got 3 ยฃ200 indesit’s in the family all over 3 and none even beginning to show bearing problems or any problems, at the end of the day machines being written off for items stuck in the drum are people’s own fault.
No matter the make or kind of drum if its used correctly, not overloaded and all pockets checked before use it will last a reasonable amount of time, you will always see some early failures but on average they will last.
Only yesterday i pulled a spoon, Nintendo Ds game,ยฃ3.23 and a clothes peg from a sump, what hope do we really have.

Not all classixx’s martin, and this is the thing, if you compile a list of sealed drum machines and you are not 100{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} correct the list is worthless, and the first list is incorrect, so i certainly wont be adding to it.

“All makes sold at Argos” No this is incorrect. The Bush and Pro Action machines (Which are both Vestals) have a tank which can be disassembled. By the way and sort of on topic the Bush bearing oil seal that is most commonly used is size 40x66x10/11.5. This seal has now been changed from a single lip seal to a double lip seal to improve bearing life. Masterpart part number 5045174318013

People have the choice to leave lights on, heating on etc, .”That’s exactly my point…they make a choice.
In the same way they choose to do quick washes. People seem to want to save the planet by doing a poor wash cycle (because it’s been advertised as worthwhile on TV commercials for washing powder) yet are happy to leave lights and heating on.
Another thing which gets forgotten (or not known maybe) about full-length wash cycles is that using them at the right temperature allows for less detergent to be used for an effective wash. Surely that has to be good for the environment? I run an 8KG machine in a mildly hard water area, yet only use one solid tablet per wash. But then I use a ‘proper’ cycle you see…the results of a line full of white washing speaks for itself.

I guess you guys here are more knowledgeable about this than I am, but I think all the new Electrolux group washing machines with horizontal indents on the side walls of the shell may have sealed tubs, including all AEG Protex washing machines.
That even the most expensive high-end AEG machines currently on the market now have sealed tubs just goes to show that buying an expensive washing machine doesn’t necessarily mean buying a better quality machine, one might just as well have ended up paying extra for more bells and whistles and/or a (formerly) reputable brand name.

Yes indeed, all E/lux, Zanussi and the AEG protex series have welded tubs.
