ParticipantNo doubt some people on here have already been affected by the current cold snap, in the north west I’ve been reletively untouched up to now 😀 However last winter was a different matter with hardly a customer in the shop throughout January.
Getting to some of my calls was no laughing matter either one or two customers in more remote locations kindly helping me out with lifts in four wheel drives.
I’m sure other’s on here have suffered last winter and have stories to tell ?November 28, 2010 at 2:33 pm #337224iadom

Beautiful sunny day today, not a wisp of snow, it was -8°C this morning though. 😥

Last year my van couldn’t get up one off the hills round here (neither could anybody else) so I had to leave it and walk home at 6 miles in the freezing snow at 7pm.
Next moring I had to walk back 6 miles and get it at 7am after the roads had been gritted. 🙁
Dont fancy that this year
Mind you no snow here yet 😀November 29, 2010 at 7:08 am #337227robbra

Last year this area was the only one to escape the snow, it seemed to circle the Swanage, Weymouth and Dorchester area. Not a flake settled and all I wanted were a few days off but couldn’t fob off the customers as they knew it was clear 😥
An hours snow last Friday evening was gone by 11pm so work again today.
Here’s hoping for some later in the week.
Rob
PS. sorry if this is not in line with others thinking but it’s my view.November 29, 2010 at 10:02 am #337228funkyboogy

I was looking for a shovel this morning to dig the van out and go to Saturdays jobs, which I cancelled as the A98 was closed by the Police. I tried the workshop, nothing; the garage, personal door frozen to its frame; the new shed, padlock frozen; then finally trudged down the back lawn to the garden shed where I got the door open and found a spade. On the lawn the snow was almost up to the top of my wellies and we have had another 2″ since then. It took an hour to clear the windows of the van and get it to the road.

Do any of you lads north of the border use studded tyres?

Given time when the snow eventually comes down south here to the ‘home counties’ the government will by then issue a ‘national emergency’ and the country will no doubt grind to a halt in the process.:rolls:
So far not a flake has fallen down here but it’s pretty chilly and hopefully all the fossil fuels we are using to stay warm will kick-start global warming once again? 😈

Ah yes but remember Martin, when global warming gets going properly the gulfstream will change course and we will get the weather most other places at our latitude get, e.g. Siberia. 😉

Hi spimps,
I don’t use any special tyres if it’s to bad to go out I stay at home. It’s not so much the snow but the drifting from the fields even a 4×4 tractor will belly up.
Took me and the wife most of the morning to clear the snow from the garage. Not out today nor Tuesday just not worth it. Last Thursday landed in a snow covered ditch it was an hour before a tractor came along and pulled me out.
In the van I do carry a snow shovel, wellies, old bit of carpet (for under the wheels) other than that I jist bide in the hoose.

I am going to have a set of winter tyres fitted next week. They won’t get you through the deep snow but will actually allow a two wheel driven car to drive better than a four wheel vehicle fitted with standard tyres on icy roads and packed snow.
I do have a spare set of wheels so only have to pay for the tyres. Put them on for four to five months, swap em in March.
They are compulsory in most Scandinavian countries during winter months.
At around £550 it is a small price to pay to keep mobile and safe.
Its all down to temperature so I’m told, normal rubber loses almost all of its grip when it is freezing, winter tyres are much softer and the grip you get on packed snow or ice is amazing.

We have getting on for six inches in Lincolnshire, more on the higher ground.Although quite a bit of the county is flat the drainage dykes are all around and are very deep so if you slip off road your in big trouble. We usually escape the worst weather.
Van will stay in the drive tomorrow for sure.November 29, 2010 at 9:44 pm #337237iadom
