one of our engineers stuck on the A80 yesterday joined at cumbernauld 8.30 am left 9pm …took 12 nad a half hours to travel 2 miles ..
he spent most of the day helping out with stuck cars and building snowmen , says threr must be at least 200 hundred snow men maybe more ..
tbh he was lucky he got off .. loads of drivers spent the night in cars lorrys …
lots of local residents ferrying tea coffee etc through the night – up steep imbankments to get to stranded drivers.. i nearly went but remembered i had finsihed a bottle of wine and our street totaly snowed inn ..
cars lorrys still stuck this morning ..what a night mare ..

Hopefully he still got to his calls. You know what they’re like when the dryer won’t work in this weather 😉

I have been having e-mail conversations with the Telegraphs HonestJohn regarding winter tyres.
He has an excellent motoring web site of his own http://www.honestjohn.co.uk . full of useful info and a very good Q&A feature every week in the Saturday Telegraph motoring supplement.
Acting upon his advice I contacted my insurers, Volvo Owners Insurance administered by Sun Alliance.
They said “no problem, no excess, we will put a note on your policy and thanks for informing us”. 8)
Apparently HJ is compiling a list and they are the first to have been added. 🙂

I agree a very useful site that I have frequented and used many times before. Time to contact our insurers to see what they say (Zurich).

Ah, sounds like we have got off quite lightly here in darkest Banffshire. I’ve had no bother getting to the few calls I’ve had for the last week or so but I did have a bit of trouble getting away from one today. It was a customer I know quite well who lives down a rough track but not far from the busy A98. There is quite a steep uphill incline where the track meets the A98 and that bit was thick, solid ice. There was a bit of clear road about 20 feet or so before the junction so it was possible to get out if you set off from there and didn’t have to stop to give way at the icy bit. I must have rolled back and started forward from that grippy bit about 20 times before I struck lucky and arrived at the junction when there was a gap in the traffic.

Can’t say I’m looking forward to tomorrow.
Friday we had to postpone some calls, and that was bad enough. We are full tomorrow (Mon) Tues and most of Weds. Knowing what was coming we purposely left Thurs free to drop Mondays calls into, but the problem now is all that comes in this week will now get after Christmas.
The roads here are very icy, and there is every chance some places we won’t get to.
Something tells me there will be some abuse on the phones.

dont forget not only does the softer compound of winter tyres wear out faster in summer, they also cause more friction in summer, and therefore have a higher rolling resistance, meaning they use more fuel as well in summer.
best option is to keep a spare set of rims (cheaply available from scrappys/ebay) for the driven wheels, i.e front or rear unless a 4×4… and fit them with winter tyres. its apprx extra 10-15{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} worth of noticeable grip for un-powered wheels with winter tyres in the temps were currently experiencing, and therefore negligiable at low speeds
