Going off last winter they would have paid for themselves within one week, also thats three months less wear on my standard tyres to take into consideration as well. 😉

:hmm: Do you mean you’ll leave them on all winter or would that be the extra tyre wear caused by slipping?

Keep them on throughout Dec, Jan, Feb, pop the standard ones back on for the rest of the year.
They also have vastly improved road holding properties on normal wet roads as well.
Normal tyres can take a bashing in winter due to the slipping as you say so its a win, win for me. 8)

I’ll just stick to letting air (15 psi front – 25 psi rear) out of my tyres. A trick the Scandinavians have been doing for decades. 😉

Although its compulsory for most of them to fit winter tyres anyway. 😉
Mind you, you do get Scandinavian type weather in deepest Berkshire don’t you. 😛

Went into Halfords today and the guy in front of me was trying to buy snow chains.
His car was a VW golf with lowered suspension, alloys with ultra low profile tyres and body kit fitted.
They wouldn’t sell him any for a multitude of reasons but it was funny watching him trying to get out of the car park driving his “SNOW PLOUGH” 😈 😈 😈

Winter tyres are a must there is no comparison, your braking distance with them in the wet is much better, in the snow you can’t compare them to letting air out, in an emergency to get out of trouble it helps but is dangerous if left at low pressure.
Unless you have used them you don’t know what your missing, the minute the weather gets up to 7 deg you must go back to normal tyres as it doesn’t take long to wear out, all weather tyres tread goes hard below 7 deg and won’t squeeze the snow out.

Also if you run your tyres deliberately at 15psi to 25psi below correct pressure and are involved in an accident the authorities would take a very dim view of it I’m sure. 😛

Alternative to winter tyres:???
Are winter tyres worth it??
And it will only be a matter of time that insurance companies lobby to get the law changed like this:
Having had one of my busiest days for a long time, it was made much harder by the extreme weather. Particularly difficult using the sack trolley to move the new fridge to a block of flats with no road near by….. and two flights of steps as well.
Made all the better by the last minute fan element job that I managed to squeeze in while dropping my daughter off at a friends house about 10 miles away… worth the trip

We have not had much snow down here, main problem has been ice on the minor roads its been very dangerous, i found that out yesterday while trying to reach a customer on the edge of Dartmoor. I skidded off the road and hit a crash barrier. It was never worth going out lesson learnt 😯 . We also have had not many spare parts turn up this week, most customers here are not very understanding, suppose they cant see any snow out the window and wonder what all the fuss is !. Guess they dont watch the news then.

I did three calls this morning, two of them I wouldn’t have got within a mile of on my normal tyres.
One old dear rang and left a message on my answerphone warning me not to go down her avenue but to park at the top as no one could get out.
Unfortunately she phoned well after I had left for my first call in Saddleworth.
I drove right down to the bottom of her avenue, turned round and then drove back up the hill and parked outside her house.
When I came to set off again, I sailed away perfectly. 8)
All that way to tell them they had turned the cold water tap off. 😆
