    Re: Beko fridge freeze recall

Thanks K although I have all that information on my Blog already. The only missing information I have is, can they catch fire spontaneously, whilst previously appearing perfectly ok? Or can they only catch fire after several days of playing up?

As half a million appliances are said to be affected Beko are not going to want to advise everyone to stop using them as it would involve a lot of food going off and consequential damage claims. This could colour judgement on what is the best course of action. I don’t mean this as a slur on Beko, only history is littered with examples of cases where companies and institutions have done what’s best for them and not the safety of their customers. That fact is indisputable and causes me to be sceptical of advice that products are safe to continue using.

    Re: Beko fridge freeze recall

Beko are saying that the affected appliances are perfectly safe to use as long as “nothing unusual” is happening with them. The London fire brigade representative on Radio 2 also said there is no need to stop using them.

I hope that it truly is the case that no affected appliance has ever caught fire without first displaying clear symptoms that something is wrong, and for long enough to be noticed, because if not, this advice could prove to be fatal.

Thanks nomadPaul. So the initial fee is higher to cover the actual repair? That affects my figures though not my attitude 🙂 I’ll amend them soon.

    Re: Bosch do FREE callouts!

If it’s a good idea to pay for this cover, then it should be a good idea the following year too, and the next. In fact each year that goes by it’s a better idea because it’s a year older..

Even assuming it never went up, £168 per year is £1,680 over 10 years. If you are 20 and in your first house and you buy into this fear-purchase and live until 70 – needing a washing machine all that time – then over the next 50 years – not taking into account the definite price increases over that time – you will have spent £8,400 just in order to have a working washing machine.

It’s hard to imagine many circumstances where simply buying a decent washing machine and keeping it maintained could cost any where near that amount.

Personally I despise all these fear products (have you seen the new “protect my bubble” insurance (aptly named) offering to “protect” all your stuff and reminding you how at any minute something nasty could happen to it?

Anyone buying into the idea that you should be so scared of your remote control getting stood on, or dropping their phone, or their dishwasher, cooker, fridge, freezer, washing machine, microwave, Television, central heating, car, iPod, iPad, vacuum cleaner, computer and so on and so on breaking down or getting damaged will find themselves trapped in a never ending cycle of insuring and can never afford to have anything repaired because they are paying out so much each month or at every new purchase in insurance and maintenance contracts – so they of course need the cover more than ever.

People are asking if they should stop using the appliance if theirs is one affected. They are saying they cannot get through to Beko. People with small children are especially frightened that theirs could catch fire. If unable to get through to Beko I would unplug the machine and claim consequential damage.

I’ve been following this thread for a while and at the risk of commenting whilst not being in possession of full facts I can only see a fellow white goods company being ridiculed and attacked and responding in kind.

Verging on the completely useless. My favourite is
    Step 2: No Water

Simple, first make sure you have selected the correct programme then make sure that your water hoses are correctly connected.

Crass. It doesn’t even say make sure the taps are turned on. Unbelievable drivel.

I thought things were supposed to be kept civilised and no personal attacks etc? I blame the fact that there are 10 moderators listed for this forum. If there was just one, that person would feel proper responsibility for the job (which as a former moderator of various forums I know is a difficult job). When there’s so many the responsibility gets very much watered down and everyone thinks well if none of the others have stepped in I’m not gonna.

Edited to add: This is not a comment on any specific post or person, just the general decline of standards resulting in people slagging each other off and worse insulting people in order to get a reaction (verging on trolling).

I’ve since found two more of your links within your comments to articles that are broken. I’m presuming the move is to blame?

    Re: Distant selling laws

You cannot return goods under the distance selling regs that are “tailor made”. I would argue spare parts made specifically for a product already owned by the customer are tailor made for the product and therefore exempt.

The only reason the distance selling regs exist is to redress the imbalance against the customer when they can’t be sure of what they are buying because they can’t examine it prior to purchase. This cannot be the case when buying a specific replica spare part.

    Re: Distant selling laws

The trouble with this country is too many people are incapable or afraid of using their own common sense and judgement. They blindly follow “rules” to the letter and are terrified of using their own judgement to apply them which results in ridiculous examples such as staff at a supermarket refusing to sell a pensioner alcohol because he didn’t have any id. I seriously despair at what this county’s become.

    Re: Distant selling laws

I can’t see how spare parts were meant to be caught up in distance selling regs – especially if opened and fitted. As parts are specifically for a customer they should be covered under the exceptions as are other goods specially ordered or tailored for a customer.

Customers aren’t shopping around for something suitable where quality, comfort, colour etc are all important aspects that can’t be judged without physical inspection. They are parts specifically designed to fit their specific appliance and as long as they are the correct part there should be no legitimate reason to return them under distance selling regulations.

There’s no need for them to receive the part only to discover it’s the wrong colour and the photo they bought from misrepresented it, or that it’s not as well made as they expected (it should be an identical part to the one they are replacing) or that it isn’t very comfortable or easy to use – because it’s the same as the part they already have.

Basically spare parts should be exempt from distance selling regs

Peter will no doubt speak for himself philphish but I don’t think he was referring to you. There was a comment made on my Blog article where someone said the engineer had probably flooded the base of the machine and caused another error himself. It was maybe that comment he was referring to. If not, and he didn’t even see that one then oops! 😉
