ParticipantRe: Hotpoint WF740TB – sealed drum?
In conclusion, the Hotpoint has gone and we now have a Bosch WIS28440GB all running nicely and ready to be integrated (just waiting for a wider worktop).

Yes, it is white-ish. But as remember all the old (proper) Hotpoint drums were white-ish so I didn’t think anything of it. As you say, I don’t think it’s a machine to invest more money in. As the male engineer in the household, I would tend towards an ISE, but this would break the no 1 rule that there will be no white appliances, only cream or almond. There’s a suggestion on the ISE web site that they may have a built-in model by late this year, but I don’t think the WF740 will last that long. Miele only seem to do semi-integrated, white or stainless, so that’s them out… that’s as far as I’ve got so far.

Hi Roger,
The part I replaced (your symptoms sound the same) was
this oneI don’t remember exactly what I had to take apart but it wasn’t hard. Power off, and look at the back wall of the oven for screws to undo!

ParticipantRe: WF 740T – heater replacement
Thanks, all. Spotted the failed capacitor (C17 – 680µF 25v) and replaced it – all well!

ParticipantRe: WF 740T – heater replacement
Thanks, iadom. The overload thermostat was semi-educated speculation on my part so I’ll forget that. The base of my drum doesn’t have a moulded ridge at the end of the heater – the recess is about 10cm longer than the heater. So I’ll just retighten the clamp nut and leave it.
Agree regarding the Indesit rubbish and the trebuchet, but it’s what I’ve got so will need to be fixed if it can be.
The timing of the flashing lights did suggest a capacitor fault, do you mean the 16µF or a capacitor on the module?
Thanks
Chris

ParticipantRe: WF 740T – heater replacement
Thanks – I’ve understood that F08 is the heater not being detected as off when it should be, so either a stuck heater relay, stuck pressure switch or some heater fault that upsets the detection. I wondered if it might be via the overload thermostat. (I’ve just thought, I guess I can swap that for the one in the new heater).
I bought a refurb module from EMW – Tony assures me he fits new heater relays on all his refurb boards, so I had eliminated that. (The original fault symptom was all console lights flashing intermittently.)

Refurbished board received from EMW, fitted and solved the problem. Good service from EMW. Thanks again to iadom for the tip.

Thanks, iadom. Order sent to EMW.

ParticipantRe: WD640 tripping out breaker
Just for info, in case anyone else has a similar problem – the replacement heater fixed the problem. It’s the second replacement heater on this machine, the first went open circuit, this one short circuit. They seem to last 12 – 18 months.
I realise now why my meter didn’t show a short, just a high resistance, even though the MCB tripped – a multimeter only tests at low voltage, so the insulation was largely effective, 230V would have been different. If I’d tested it with a Megger (not that I have one) I guess it would have shown the short.

Thanks, Phidom, I’ll have look inside (as you say, with plug out)

ParticipantRe: Choosing a new dryer
Thanks, kwatt.
The cost of electricity was worked out from the energy to dry a load, times 365 days in the year (used once a day on average), times cost of electricity, then subtract the figure for the Siemens from that for the ISE. The Siemens is quoted as 0.27kWh/kg, but I had to guess the energy use for the ISE from its C rating as I couldn’t find a figure – I took the middle of the band as 0.63 kWh/kg.Problem is the Siemens figure is very low, as good as the Miele Heat Pump, so I’m not sure I trust that info, and the ISE is higher than I expected for the ethos of the company – hence asking for advice.
Thanks for your other points – I have put in an old fashioned ceiling rack on pulleys – but we do a lot of cycling, canoeing etc so have lots of wet kit.
helo-75 – thanks, but I think you’ve picked me up wrong. I’m not thinking of buying a Hotpoint – I’m about to bin one and don’t fancy another, for all the reasons you say. I’m asking about Siemens v ISE, or in general, quality machines and how much can I trust the energy ratings?
Given that a dryer will use from one to several times its purchase cost in electricity, the amount it uses is quite important. Is there an independent source of energy data?
Thanks

ParticipantRe: Hotpoint WD640 – no dryer heat and F13
Thanks, helo_75, that’s really useful.
I took a photo of the heater box and that thermal fuse you describe is there. Sloppy thinking on my part not to realise what it was. It’s on order now.
I checked the heater with a meter; it’s not open circuit. Fan spins freely and doesn’t foul on anything.
There’s a grey ribbed hose about 1cm or 1.5cm diameter, comes into the back corner of the heater box via a 90º elbow – but I can see it without splitting the box. Is that the one you mean?
Thanks,

ParticipantRe: TDL 30 rear bearing wearing out fast
Thanks, helo_75. I turned the bearing upside down last week when it first failed – now I’ve fitted the new bearing. But I’d rather not have to keep replacing it every 18 months!

Thanks both, that’s most helpful – you don’t happen to know which category Sainsbury’s tablets are in, do you?
