It is all down to what a consumer can expect to be reasonable, but like i say i have never seen this 6 year period tested in a court of law, also never seen it written either. What retailers wish to do is entirely down to them, i myself would not exchange a £200 machine after 18 months for free, i would ask the customer to prove it in a court, dont think they would get far TBH.

Having owned a dozen merc vans over years i would say they would fix it, no questions asked. I had loads of stuff done out of warranty for free.

Have a look outside on the high street martin, you bet your life retailing has changed from the 80’s, no internet and a bigger profit margin.
I dont have any issues with customers and have a pretty good sales rate to footfall, but then again i dont sell the cheap stuff that will give me grief.

Dont believe that for a minute, these guys waited untill mo one else was in the game, bought it for 2 quid and a 50 million dowry, made themselves a preferential secured creditor, put plans on place to get rid of the service staff and all the costs that went with it, ran with it to see if they could make any serious money and as soon as a valid excuse came along( credit insurance), to bail out took that option and in return for less than a years work will make millions for their investors, not a bad day job. The uk taxpayer will pick up the cost of this also.

In my opinion ken is correct, as i have sought advice on this before, like i said RETRA wrote a fact sheet on this subject and the fact is a consumer has to prove that an item was faulty from new after 6 months. I dont think you will ever see a customer with a 5 year old bosch washing machine that has failed be able to prove that it was faulty from new, how will they prove this? Cant be done in my opinion.
All the OFT has done is give consumers incorrect information and it is us the retailer that has to inform them of the correct info and duck the flack.

As far as i am aware the OFT is incorrect in the 6 year suggestion, no where in this country has this ever been the case or example, this was shown to be incorrect by RETRA.
It is correct though that the comsumer has to proove or show reasonable evidence that the fault was there from new which has never been done yet.

Nothing to do with credit terms, the wording in the sales document is Retention of Title, if its in there it belongs to the supplier until paid for, if its sold with out the suppliers permission it will be a criminal offence.

I dont think we will see a comet shop on the high street by the end of november, others may be sniffing around but who would buy a company losing money, might as well wait and when its all gone buy the comet name and rent any one of he soon to be empty shops! This is what happened to mfi as this name is on internet, woolworths is on internet, there us some value in the internet side of things and the name.
