rates are woefully low given the cost of the product we are working on. If I said certain other low end product work providers well know to this site pay more, then you get the picture.
Having said that, quantity of work is good as nearly every new flat development (around here anyway) has smeg product fitted these days. and you get a good spares supply and discount for chargeable work-although Smeg will cream off much of the chargeable enquiries by selling the user a warranty or fixed price job before passing the job onto you. Also, in our experience, we don’t pick up a lot of chargeables once the warranty has run out despite leaving cards, stickers and mail shots to the developments- often bought by buy to let landlords who kick the appliances out as soon as they break and replace with cheaper tat.JoeStrummer

Put it this way, without a megger, despite the fault you are called to attend, you have no idea if there is an earth leakage. Therefore you have no idea if there is a potential DEATH risk to yourself or your customer.
You can clear a pump, fit a door seal, unblock a soap dispenser or whatever that does not involve an electrical fault; but you have a duty of care to yourself, your customer or indeed your employee. Without a simple check you have no idea what is lurking.
You can meet an appliance that has an inherent earth leakage, and enough to kill anyone who happens to be the conductor between that machine and a good earth, and you were the last one there. You or your company left paperwork, or a line on the victim’s bank statement to say who was paid on the last day someone looked at that product.
You can be complacent and say, “But I had no need to take an insulation resistance test, as there was no electrical fault”. However did you check the earth path itself, meaning is that appliance actually earthed properly? Dare I suggest someone who breezes in and facilitates a repair without a megger won’t be doing an earth loop test either?
The thought of some of what has been added in this thread to date horrifies me, and the poor old punter has no idea why some repairers seem to be too bloody cheap!
I’m going to be blunt here; I hope some of what has been posted to date on this subject is NOT indicative of the members of UKW as a whole.

You are most welcome to do so Mr Goatboy. Why not ask K Watt how to post a table while you are at it so as it may be rather more readable. I tried but could never manage to post ordered columns.

just like that eh! and who might “us” be? oh I see from your profile…good to see a DAD sales manager on the site and being the sole wholesaler for the brand you have the most to lose. I cannot believe that service issues such as this can be solved at the drop of a hat. BSH treat the brand as a 2nd class product (along with Teknik by the way judging by their attitude when parts are being ordered) and convey that to customers. Yet the BSH tie in was the main reason I started selling the brand in the first place, how misled I was.

Yes thanks Martin, once I confirmed it was the correct part, I sent him back and somehow he managed it this time. The problem was not the width being too long as much as the rubber “skirt” being to short. I guess the thought of that put his mind off track. Sometimes he is not in Complete Control and he keeps asking me if he should stay or should he go. Maybe its just the heat that got to him as London’s Burning right now.

Don’t be tight ! get rid of it, the Quartz is ancient, they went through more parts than your average Hotpoint, Door boots, brushes, power cards etc we didn’t even bother trying to change bearings on a machine with a service contract in the good old days. Just bunged in a complete backplate with inner drum & pulley.
Brings tears to my eyes just thinkin of it…tears of joy i don’t work for them any more !!
These machines had their problems but hey, its still on the road and that says a lot, get it checked it may only be something minor.
