Oliver seems to be very conspicuous in his absence.

“The art of getting lower prices” is, of course, haggling. Sadly, it’s rife all over the UK and leads to the import of cheaper and cheaper inferior goods – and the export of more and more UK jobs to the sweat shops in the third world.

Buy properly designed, built and longer lasting British products. In the long run pay lower taxes as there’ll be far fewer benefits claimants.

When someone says “you got what you paid for” it’s not just the item you have to consider – it’s also the socio-economic consequences.

ADDED – Oops. I guess he would be conspicuous in his absence, given the age of the thread! 😆

It’s an old machine in a rental flat so anything could have happened – although the current tenants seem very responsible and are looking after the place well.

Thanks for the tip – will check it out if I get the job.

    Many thanks.

Customer informed – now I just wait while their timber floor gets soggy under the vinyl that’s already lifting. Shame about the ceiling in the flat below … 😕

Re: reliable used dishwasher? Do they exist?

I’m a plumber and also do some minor domestic appliance repairs.

I can’t say if it’s been reliable, or not, but I installed a second hand dishwasher about 3 months ago.

2nd hand dishwashers often put in an appearance on Freecycle – http://www.freecycle.org/display.php?region=United{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d}20Kingdom. There’ll be a group near you.

Alternatively try a local LETS (Local Exchange And Trading Scheme) but you may have to pay a nominal joining fee. LETS, however, can be a nice little earner if you have some suitable skills and time to offer!

I believe any domestic appliance should outlast its warranty by a few months! It’s really luck of the draw. I’ve just replaced the brushes in the motor on a 25 year old washer/dryer (my own). I don’t recall ever having to do any repairs on it before. I can’t see it lasting another 25 years, though, so I’d better start saving for a new one!

Try local second hand shops and/or catalogue seconds companies.

What sort of death has the old one died? It might not be beyond economic repair.

I’ve just added Plumbing Register to my blacklist. They’re part of the Iomart group and, on their web site, claim to be ‘powered by ufindus.com’.

    Re: ufindus.com

Hi all, this is my first post in UK Whitegoods. I’m a self-employed plumber.

Sorry to resurrect this old thread but it certainly seems that Ufindus are an ongoing problem.

My first contact with them was soon after I started trading just under a year ago. Fortunately I was a member of the Screwfix Talk forums and had already seen some posts about them. Even if I hadn’t I’m deeply cynical of such companies and always check them out before committing to any transaction that involves money going in the wrong direction.

To cut a long story short I told them never to call me again. Since then I’ve repeatedly told them never to call me again and that I will never do business with them so there is absolutely no point in them calling me. Do they listen? Fat chance. I get fed up of answering the ‘phone to them when I’m stuck under someone’s bath or up to my neck in tile adhesive. I can’t just ignore ‘private’ numbers as I may be ignoring a call from a customer!

All my numbers are registered with the Telephone Preference Service and I’m waiting for an answer, from them, on whether or not a prosecution might be possible. I certainly hope so.
