ParticipantRe: It’s an exploding Hotpoint Dishwasher now
This would probably be one of the EOS platform dishwashers produced between 2007 and 2010 recalled in 2014.

This picture is fascinating. It suggests restricted air flow through the dryer has caused a mini cyclone to form within the heater frame, causing hair and fluff to build up in this space, a bit like a Dyson vacuum cleaner in slow motion.
It makes me wonder how well the product engineers at Whirlpool/Hotpoint really understand the mechanism for these fires and how effective the new back panels are going to be. Time will tell, I guess.

Good tip, nomadPaul, I’ll focus on the bottom edge when (if?) I need to get the panel off one of these again.

As you say, I guess it must just unclip, as there are no visible screws in the panel. I tried to unclip the top edge, which pops out quite easily on Bosch washing machine panels, but this panel appeared to have concealed rigid upward facing hooks at the top, which didn’t want to budge.
Breaking the odd clip on a Hoover washing machine panel is something I have lived through, but perhaps, on older German made Bosch tumble dryers, also something I may just have to come to terms with!

Miele without a doubt. On build quality and performance, they are head and shoulders above everything else. They are the only manufacturer that I am aware of that publishes the design life of its laundry and dishwashing appliances (10,000 hours, ie 20 years at 10 hours a week). The only downside is that you might find they may require your services less often…and spares tend to be pricey.

I’d guess the mechanism for the build up of fluff is this:
When the filter and/or outlet vent becomes blocked, the heater fan pressurises the drum, forcing dust laden air to escape, mainly at the front drum seal. Some of this dust laden air is then sucked back into the heater chamber through the dryer cabinet.
As the front drum seal gradually becomes blocked by fluff, an increasing proportion of the recycled fluff laden air is forced through the rear drum seal, which itself acts as a filter, leading to the familiar “doughnut” of fluff to build up within the rear seal. In addition, slight leaks around the heater cover cause a build up of fluff around the heater frame.
Then the bit that I am unsure about. Eventually, the air flow becomes so poor that the heater is unable to properly regulate its temperature and any flammable fluff catches fire.

Have you checked the price with Whirlpool trade parts on 03448240333? Sara Griffith is currently their non-account holder rep. I’ve found them sometimes significantly cheaper than wholesalers for complete tubs and the service is pretty quick.
In the last month the list price of many Whirlpool and Indesit prices have actually come down – I think more than have gone up.

ParticipantRe: one advantage of Whirlpools take over of Indesit…..
This is good news. Since Whirlpool’s old trade spares team went late last year, I’ve found it quite difficult to to check official prices for Whirlpool parts.
It’s a shame the system still doesn’t deal properly with superseding parts, which means part numbers and prices identified on Partfinder are often no longer valid.

The dryer in the Aberdeen incident looks like an Indesit condenser dryer to me. The door outer metal cover has come off and the remaining frontal plastics heavily melted. See the door catch area, arched door aperture and remains of lower hinged cover.

ParticipantRe: Fire hazard!!
I’m guessing this is the dust cleared from the filter and condenser, piled up on the heater for dramatic effect. I’m struggling to work out how it could have built up there naturally, whether the airflow was restricted or not.

I agree a lot of people seem unaware of the recall. I’ve found also, that those that do are confused about the brands, and often wrongly assume it affects Whirlpool dryers.
It doesn’t help there is a lot of brand confusion out there. How often do you get asked to look at a Hotpoint machine, and turn up to find it’s a Hoover, or Zanussi? Or when you talk about brands, the customer says, well they are all made by the same company aren’t they? Or, Bosch own Hotpoint don’t they they (perhaps because they read in Which? in the late 80s that Hotpoint dishwashers were the same as Bosch, but a bit cheaper)?

ParticipantRe: BT compensation claim
Have BT resolved the technical problems now? You need to be clear what you want BT to offer and ask BT for that. The ombudman will not act unless they are satisfied you have come to a dead end with BT. Before taking things forward the ombudsman will want details of your contacts with BT, including dates and the names of the persons you dealt with.
In terms of getting compensation, the ombudsman might be quite effective, as long as your estimate of losses is reasonable. However, if there are remaining issues with the service provided by BT, if my experience is anything to go by, you may get no further forward. BT agreed a resolution with the ombudman for my business phone contract last August, but despite an apologetic letter from BT agreeing to the changes, and an ex-gratia payment of £50, they have failed to implement any of agreed changes and the ombudsman has so far been powerless to do anything about it.

There was backing yesterday for Trading Standards’ stance on this in Parliament from a government minister in response to an MP’s question on behalf of his constituent (the second question on Consumer Protection at this link):
