im sure theres a good take up of people using this site who take on good advice and use the online shop to assist them, thats the point, isnt it better to get SOMETHING back, rather than lose out completely?

Whooaa boy! ….. UKWG “get SOMETHING back” and all the rest of us “lose out completely” Can you not see this?

I think Kwatt shows his true “Black Duck’dness” by his “if you don’t like it *ugger off I’m doing it anyway attitude.

No problem with this, it’s his site he can do what he wants, but anyone who helps to shovel coal onto our funeral pyre has to need his head read … IMHO.
Don’t forget, those who run the site also benefit hugely from the info it contains … hard earned trade secrets shared willingly among service engineers. But when these are leaked to all and sundry alarm bells should be sounding.
I don’t care what anyone else is doing or how they’re doing it … if amateurs want to show how clever they are on youtube by fixing their Bosch on camera, good luck to ’em, but if our trade has any integrity, we should remain aloof!

Don’t get me wrong …. I have HUGE respect for you guys that make UK Whitegoods what is is .. and will be, but I don’t think you are infallible, even if some posters seem to infer their way is the only right way.
Surely, spare parts should be accompanied by a note saying that they should ONLY be fitted by someone competent or qualified to do so*, that having been said, no advise need be given … if they’re competent, they don’t need to ask how to fit them …. simple init.
    * If you don’t say this, are you not opening yourself up to litigation in the event of electrocution, fire etc.?

Its interesting to note that at least one poster in this thread has never, ever answered a question on the boards, even in the closed trade section, he gets all of this massive resource at his fingertips, all absolutely free and then complains about someone giving sensible, accurate information to the public. :rolls:

That’d be me ….. Happy to answer trade questions, but as I don’t spend all day on the net, somebody always beats me to it.

I’d NEVER dream of posting on a public forum, as what I know is hard earned over 30 years and stays with me … information is all, and anyone who gives it away free to a customer deserves to go under (Is it vanity?).

One other point is that we have a WORKSHOP, and ALL faults can be found/cured by uplifting and spending time on diagnostics …. so the “massive resource” has so far proved to be of passing interest only … Fault Code book aside … but then we did pay for that .. and so it should be!

My ONLY advise to DIYers is “Let a professional do it … if you touch it, I won’t!” Of course, our workshop is VERY helpful here, as most DIYers opt to bring the machine in for repair, saving about £25 and allowing them to ease their mind by taking an active part in a guaranteed repair.

I feel very strongly that any professional service engineer posting a DIY video on the internet, available free to all, is a traitor to his trade!!! If he wants to sell it, I’m all for it!

Re: New way to replace Bosch brushes.

Life is a fight for survival to varying degrees, and today it’s all about information …. if you’ve got it, you’re winning. Share it too widely at your peril.
As for Ken’s scepticism about cheap machines, how come Miele and Bosch still exist, but Servis, Merloni and MFI don’t?
People CAN be re-educated away from the throw-away attitude and that is what we in the know should be doing.
Why not a video saying that if your machine won’t tumble, call your local repairer and it’ll only cost about £75 to get another 5 or so years out of it?
Personally, although P45 has every right to make and distribute his video, it makes me livid, and it is probably costing me and every one of us money.
The Magic Circle wouldn’t fancy him at all. 😉

Can I just ask how everyone who is in favour of the video will feel when Connect, Masterpart and Qualtex et al start providing DIY videos on their public websites? Cut out the troublesome middleman (US!) altogether.

    Re: Fridge explosion

Have seen exactly the same on an Ocean F/F, just enough gas if leaked into the enclosed fridge cavity to mix at a highly explosive ratio … all you need is the spark then BOOM. The one we saw blew the roof off the conservatory and the remains on the fridge door were bent into a V shape by it’s impact with the wall opposite. It also managed to move a stud partition wall!
The owner naively thought that a bottle of fruit juice had exploded.

Re: Working on a gas cooker

I spent a happy half hour on the phone to CORGI last year to clarify this situation. A very helpful chap told me that without certification, you can do anything that doesn’t involve gas pipework, valves or burners, including disconnecting a bayonet coupling to move the cooker out.
Ignition is a no no, because it then involves lighting the burner to test it, and you are not qualified to say if the flame is burning correctly.
We always note on the job sheet that the gas circuit has not been touched and no gas safety check has been carried out.
Biggest lunacy is that fitters cannot connect old or second-hand gas cookers without reference to the original fitting instructions … most people that come to us for a gas cooker, end up getting the pipe capped and going all electric.
All little old ladies should have to have induction hobs by law!
Can I smell Gas or is it ME! 🙂
