But the machine is only 2.5 years old and since there are just the two of us it doesn’t get that much use for anything to wear out.
Naturally I have double checked that the basket is sitting correctly on it’s runners and that it is firmly pushed back against the rear wall of the machine so that the top arm gets it’s proper water connection (it does) and in practice the action of closing the front door makes the top basket go fully back.
I am confident the machine is mechanically as it should be, but clearly something is very wrong here.

Yes – you are right, it is an AEG. Apologies for my silly but fundamental error! Is the site admin able to modify the thread title to the proper make?
I had a look again this morning. As I very slowly and gently opened the front door there was a loud ‘thud’ from just inside the left hand side of the machine as the lid of the dispenser cleared the underneath of the top basket where it was being held – and was then able to flip up to the fully open position.

Many thanks for your reply, that info is very helpful.
The info supplied by you would make the basis of a useful ‘sticky’ thread I think. Thanks again, regards yt.

Thanks for your reply. We do use the all in one tablets and the program we normally use takes 70 minutes or so to complete.
Set it off today and was able to confirm that it did have hot water inside it whilst washing, and there was warm/moist/slightly steamy air inside the machine at the end of the washing cycle. Quickly closed the door again and had another look an hour later. Still seemed to have some items with water on them when I removed them.
So, I don’t know what to think. Our three neighbours have the same machine installed by the developer and when I mentioned it to them yesterday they both said their machines did the same sort of thing and it was not unusual to have to wipe water off items after completion of the washing cycle.
Perhaps our machines are simply cheap and cheerful and not up to much?

Not sure what the post above from ‘iadom’ is about?
Apologies for not replying sooner. Since my original postings the machine has now performed a reasonable number of washes with no further problems. So, it does look as though the overloading of the drum may have resulted in the clothes getting trapped around the rubber seal areas. Thank you for your very helpful replies.

Thanks for your reply. Not too sure where to look. I have now looked at the edge of the rubber seal where it directly abuts against the rotating drum – I pulled it back so I could see. Nothing obviously burnt or ridged, it actually looked in good nick. I did see a few ‘bits of rubber’ about the size of large pin heads in and around the seal area so I hoovered them out. When I did the test of the machine I had all the panels off and could see around and the inside the carcase etc – I could see no water so hopefully any rubber seal damage was minimal.
Do you think I am looking in the right area?

He came and changed the TOC and we have given it a good testing since and it has been ok. So, looks like that was it. Thanks to all here for your support.

The engineer came and diagnosed a faulty upper heating element after it had warmed up a bit with his meter. He changed the element and the top oven function selector switch. He said the fan should stay on if the over temperature control operated which sort of contradicted the previous engineer. He would have liked to have replaced the OTC but did not have one.
He left and I tried the oven which failed again after 20mins or so.
Another service visit booked in again for this Thursday.

The oven is mounted in what I would assume is a standard double height kitchen cabinet – mdf etc. Its sits on a shelf at hip height. There is a space of about 2″ above the oven which is partially closed off at the front by a decorative panel – but whoever installed it left a gap of about 1cm between the top of the front of the oven and the bottom of the decorative panel – it looks like it was deliberately left as a potential air vent (of sorts).
Of pertinence here is that the oven went faulty twice when the engineer was here and the oven was out in the open on top of his workbench – so the enclosure would not appear to be an issue in this case?

Yes, the fan was working.
The service engineer came and after I described the problem to him he suggested a safety stat was likely to be the cause although he did not have one on him. He then witnessed the fault occur twice whilst he was here – after about 20/25 mins. On both occasions the fan kept working even though all the lights had gone out. He said if the safety stat had operated then the fan should have stopped too. We could hear the ‘up to temperature’ stat clicking as normal.
So, he was perplexed and agreed that I should have another oven, but subsequently this has been turned down by aeg who insist on parts replacement. Given the wire found dangling loose in the back of the oven last week we wonder if it has caused damage to some electrical circuitry that may be illogical to fault find?
An engineer will return on Tuesday with bits to fit.

No thoughts? Does anyone know how the machine measures the salt level or concentration, and where this ‘sensor’ might be located?

Is there any particular make you would positively recommend?
