Yep, mine lasted about 2 weeks after a defrost too, then went again.

In addition, i just removed the internal back panel and it was indeed frosted up again, defrosted and it now works. I presume this is the auto defrost not working? Is this still a main board problem? Any advice appreciated..

2nd attempt
maybe I was too long winded!! I have a problem with my fridge freezer
858615215011 S20BR WW20=A/G
started to alarm out during night usually, noticed seals hot on centre divider, also hot. then chattering and later knocking from back. Turned off for 48 hrs, no better stopped altogether now. Advised board at rear, unable to get one, ASD at Morley Nr Leeds have 200 on back order!! told will be in August, later moved back to November, just got mine now about £90-00. do I need a front board please, unable to try till next year as appliance in France not been working for 7 months. Been on to Whirlpool, no reply, phoned got nowhere,2nd letter and phone call they say they have no problems with these fridge freezers. ASD inform me that since 2005 they have supplied 4500 of these boards. Can I urge all of you with these problems to contact Watchdog as I am doing, maybe we’ll get some where. Whirlpool are making more out of repairs to these appliances than selling them in the first place. It may well be to their advantage to give these away and make money on the the repairs!!!
When I get the old board out I will try the repairs suggested, but do I need a new front board?Regards Wpooly

It works fine and does ice and keeps everything good for about 9 days, then the temp indicator on freezer starts sounding off and the fridge won’t cool as much. I leave it another 4 days then defrost the whole thing and put all food in an a cooler box for the night.
I rmeove back panel inside freezer which reveals the iced up heat exchanger (like a radiator) leeave it defrosting overnight and power up everything fine for another two weeks and defrost. like clockwork. So it would appear my one doesn’t go through the auto defrost cycle or something , not sure what to check to confrim this or what to test to identify which part i need though.
been reading about the problems with the Whirlpool US type FF..check the evaporator heater?? (if it has the operating system as the Samsung inside the cabinet). if the evap heater is open circuit then the ice cannot be melted for off the evaporator

ParticipantI’ve been reading these posts with great interest. We have a Whirlppol side by side fridge freezer, which we bought on eBay and have no warranty or anything for. In fact, I’m not sure I remember the model number. It is one that does not have the water and ice dispenser. The display inside the fridge has stopped working – no lights on. The fridge and freezer lights are still on however and I can hear the motor running, so the machines still seems to be working. I am monitoring teh temperature but for teh moment it seems fine. Is this just an electrical fault with the display? Any ideas on how to fix it, and whether it is urgent to do so if the fridge is working ok otherwise? Any advise really appreciated.

Hi everyone
Anyone know the value of Cap C3?
Regards

It’s fixed 😀 . My fridge no longer flashes all for 25p.
On the front control board there is a Cap C3 on my board it was slightly bulged like you get on a duff motherboard. I’ve changed it and no more flashing.
BTW does anyone want to buy a rear board for a S20BRSS31-A/G part no 481221778192?Regards
Paul

I found some 1000uf 6.3v caps for c3 on Front pcb on ebay..My local Maplin didn’t have any.
Does anyone know what the fault code “d” on the fridge temperature display means?December 19, 2007 at 3:01 pm #142000coolchick

I am having a similar problem with my fridge freezer, model no S20BRSS31 bought in 2002. Not long after we bought it we had a circuit board replaced and front panel at a cost of £200. Since then we have had no trouble until recently when the fridge started to lose temperature. Called out whirlpool engineer after taking out a year’s contract with domestic and General via Whirlpool to cover call out and parts and if can’t repair a new appliance. In view of cost last time it seemed worth it! The engineer replaced the fan unit in the fridge and defrosted a large lump of ice behind the drawers at the bottom which he said had frozen the water dispenser hence why it wasn’t working. The repair cost nothing under the policy. Since then the water dispenser has worked but knocks loudly which stops when the fridge door is opened and the water spurts occasionally too. The fridge temperature hasn’t improved and yesterday started to drop alarmingly. I called Whirlpool out again but the engineer cant come until after Christmas. Does any one have any ideas for a quick temporary fix to see us over Christmas?
Through research on the net I have heard that this model may have a design fault in the cooling unit which causes it to ice up, causing the polystyrene to get soggy and freeze and stopping the fan working. Does anyone know if this is true and if so would defrosting the unit for 24 hours result in a temporary fix? Any suggestions would be appreciated.January 16, 2008 at 12:59 pm #142001Strongbow24

I had to succumb to the Whirlpool extended warranty offer @£200 since I knew it was the board that needed replacing and all the quotes I’d had from other sources couldn’t beat that and the machine would be covered for a further 12 months.
The engineer came in December simply opened the fridge door and said ‘I’ll order both boards but there are none in stock it will be a month’
Yesterday he came back and replaced both boards. Now I keep checking its still on because its so quiet !
The Whirlpool repair + warranty isn’t too bad as the money gets deducted direct debit over 10 months which helps my post Christmas finances considerably and looking at the prices quoted for replacement boards having both of them replaced for £20 per month sounds like a bargain.
I did contact BBC Watchdog as a previous post suggests just in case other people were doing the same, doubt they’ll look it the issue unless they have hundreds of complaints.
The engineer left me the 2 old boards …. what and where exactly are the capacitors ?

Well mine has been working perfectly for well over a year now, except that the ice maker has just given up. I periodically dump all the ice, (did this last night) but there is no ice today. I found a website that gives you info on how to test the ice maker (http://applianceguru.com/), basically it says that if the infrared transmitter flashes twice, when the pathway is clear, (calling for ice) then the optics are at fault, (It should change to continuous to call for ice).
So the question is, should I replace both the infraed boards, (how much are they) or call ot an engineer.
Any suggestions?January 20, 2008 at 7:29 pm #142003paolo

Well, bizarrely, woke up this morning to find ice, don’t understand, all I did was perform the optics check, remove everything to check connections and check for a frozen pipe and hey presto!

DickM wrote:I have a Whirlpool AFG7060 (8549 706 15002) upright freezer that seems to have suffered the same fate as the American freezers in this thread. It has been ‘chattering’ with the temperature fluctuating wildly for some time, but has just given up completely and defrosted!
Is the control board likely to be similar to the ones mentioned above, and if so, will changing the capacitors save me forking out for a new PCB? And does the fact that it’s now stopped completely an indication that I’ve left it too long and the PCB is beyond repair?
Cheers, Dick.
I just had the same problem on a 7060 – it was caused by failure of a capacitor in the power supply. If you open up the top panel, the cap nearest the transformer is the one that needs replacing. It’s a 16v 1000uF nominally, but the one I’ve just removed measured at 80uF – nowhere near enough to keep the voltage level while the relay turns on. So the freezer ends up trapped in a loop:
1) Thermostat turns on the relay to start the compressor
2) Voltage drops
3) Thermostat electronics turns off due to low voltage
4) Relay turns off due to no thermostat
5) Voltage recovers
6) Thermostat turns back on
7) Return to step (1)As your freezer has stopped working completely you may have broken the relay too – they only have a finite number of switches in them and the cycle above gets through a lot of them rather quickly!

These threads have been invaluable in solving the ice maker issue. After fixing that (found 2 caps out of spec on the back board) I too had a heat exchanger full of ice and have just forced a defrost it with a hair dryer. Whilst in there I measured teh defrost heater element which was around 90 Ohms. It remains to be seen if it continues to keep itself frost free, but in the mean time a new problem -The filter reset lamp will not reset. If that’s the only issue I can live with it, but anyone have any ideas in case it’s an easy fix? If the frost comes back I’ll take it to clifton bridge for a farewell party.

If you mean the indicator for the water filter, just hold the OK button in for a few seconds.
I had the same problem myself the first time I changed the filter, there is nothing in the manual so I had to ring Whirlpool. -
