……….and I thought I was the only one with a clicking water dispenser and flashing LED lights………
Model No.: 858615215010, Serial No.: 110228024526
My model was bought in July 2003 and within 6 months needed a new PCB board (behind the display in the freezer door) If I had seen all these problems I would have taken out the 8 year warrenty, seems like its needed.
Although I have put up with the clicking and flashing LED when using the water or ice maker for more than 2 years a more serious fault has developed.
Unfortunately one of the kids left the door ajar, but not enough to trigger the door open alarm, after a rise in the freezer temperature the alarm did trigger and the 2 – – appeared in the display, I have tried FF but after a while the alarm goes off and the – – appear again, leaving it to its own devices and freeze naturally doesnt work the 2 – – are always there and you cannot delete the warning triangle symbol. Although it doesnt seem to be defrosting it isnt freezing as it should. Reading others I’m assuming that it is a PCB boards problem if so where can i purchase the replacements? (I live in Manchester) Is it a job for a novice to do? and where do i locate the rear PCB board? – if needed –
I would appreciate any help and advice given, thanks in advance.June 2, 2008 at 7:44 am #142023Simon46

Do a 12-24 hr defrost to clear ice blockage.

Firstly thanks for your quick response, Simon46. I have done what you suggested and for 36 hours or so the freezer started working correctly …….. then …….
The water dispenser and lights are still pulsating when using it and the ice dispenser is just not working at all, worst of all the original problem has resurfaced, (ice making motor constantly on, freezer alarm going off and returning the symbols “- -” and seems like the motor is constantly running. The freezer is freezing due to it running constantly but as mentioned before keeps triggering the alarm when any figure (-18 ) is set on the LED display. Is it getting to the time I have to spend an extortionate ammount of money for repairs???June 11, 2008 at 7:06 pm #142025DeltZ

I have one of the old models of fridge freezer american style. It’s had it’s power circuit PCB less than a year ago after it stopped making things cold. Always had a bit of a clicky problem. And now it’s rampant clicking.
I know there are newer revisions of the boards now- I’d have to replace both front and back for it to be compatible. But I’ve also just ordered some capacitors to try and fix the old PCB into working state.
Does anyone know if the new revision of PCB is anything past better quality components e.g. capacitors etc. Or is it much more reliable and worth just forking out £150 to change both boards?

I have a S20BRWW20-A/G 858615215010 110323002732
Had the flashing “–“, warning light and noise.
Replaced the four 0.22uF Caps on the main board. Seems to be working at the moment (although didn’t when I first switched it back on again, had the same problem. Maybe it was just reaching temperature).
Just in case…..how do I get access to the front board ? Can’t seem to find a way in !
And from the numbers above, will I need to replace both boards ?July 3, 2008 at 9:21 pm #142027gegsy

Drip tray off and two screws hiden under it, then it lifts up and off after disconnecting two plug on cables off pcb.
Power off first :plug:

This one will need both boards.

Thanks guys. Seems like I fixed the annoying flashing and beeping (for now – unless a defrost did the trick) by four new caps on the back board but ice maker still not working. Does this need new cap somewhere also or is this controlled by front board ? Anybody know ?

OK for Penguin 45 to state all the answers are in the blog. I do not want to and I should not have to mess around with PCBs and capacitors. Whirlpool is a vast corporation they should sort this design fault in all these products. NOT FIT FOR PURPOSE comes to mind as does “class action” anyone want to join me?

🙁 Found this forum when my Whirlpool S20DRSS10 temp lights started flashing. I see that it’s a common problem. Last night my freezer alarm went off and the freezer temp display went ‘–‘. I hit the fast freeze button and it’s staying cold but still in fast freeze mode. I’ve had this appliance since Jan 2005 having bought it as a ‘Manager Special’ in Comet..now I know why they were keen to get rid of it. I’m feeling wary of paying £250+ to get it fixed. Any advice is welcome.

😥 More info – I’ve hit the fast freeze button to turn it off and the freezer display is now a flashing 18. Other numbers are 8586 154 15010 and 11 0421 022442. Thanks for any advice.

I’ll add myself to the growing list of people with dodgy Whirlpool American style fridges 🙁
First one failed after 6 months, but it took nearly a year to get a replacement, by which time Whirlpool tried to claim it was outside the warrenty. Unbelievable.
The replacement occasionally does the pulsing water thing, and goes beserk if the freezer is opened twice in rapid succession (sounds like all the relays turning on and off at a rapid rate). Turning it off and on clears that one.
The main problem with it now (and the reason I’m posting) is that it’s making a really loud buzzing sound from the white control box in the back. It sounds like a transformer buzzing, but much louder than any I’ve ever heard.
Anyone else has this? Could it be the relays making the noise? Another symptom of dodgy capacitors?
Thanks for any help

Hi. Thank you all for your help.
Yes, the capacitors are bad! I wonder where Whirlpool manages to get capacitors of this kind of ‘quality’, I wouldn’t be able to source them if I had to.
I replaced all eight on the back board and my fridge is working like new again.
Later I will replace the ones on the front board, I have to buy them beforehand.
Everyone with problems should replace all capacitors without a second thought. The new capacitors will most likely never fail and the fridge will be better than new.
If you can’t do yourself just take the board to an electronics/tv repair shop. They must do it as you wait because food inside the fridge will start melting in a couple of hours melting. Put the temperatures in the lowest settings one day before you remove the board. Here’s a list of all the capacitors in my boards:
back board (changing these fixed my problems):
plastic mains caps: 250V/275V RMS (AC) or higher if they fit:
4x 220nF
3x 100nF
1x 330nF
1x 1000nFelectrolitic (don’t reverse polarity)
6.8V or higher:
1x 1000uFfront board (these are also bad but I haven’t replace them yet):
plastic mains caps: 250V, 275V RMS (AC) or higher if they fit:
3x 470nF
1x 680nF
1x 330nF
4x 3uFelectrolitic (don’t reverse polarity)
6.8V or higher:

Replaced caps on back board to get freezer working again. Worked a treat.
Replaced 0.33, 0.68 and 3 x 0.47 on front board to try to get ice maker working but no joy.
Now thinking Infra Red sensor is possibly not working. Any ideas anybody ? -
