Re: Whirlpool American Fridge Freezer broken down – help!

    Hi,

I seem to have the same problem as quite a few people on this forum with my S20D FSS10 Fridge Freezer. Following a thunderstorm about 6 weeks ago which tripped the circuit breaker in the house the control panel in the fridge now flickers continually. In the last couple of weeks the freezer alarm has been going off with the display showing two dashes (–) as the freezer starts to defrosts. Turning the fridge to standby for a few minutes and then back on seems to cure the problem for a short while and then it starts again.

I’ve defrosted the freezer thoroughly as suggested in this forum but it hasn’t made any difference. I’ve had both pcb’s out to visually inspect for any fried components but can’t see anything obvious. When I turn the freezer back on I can hear a relay click on and the compressor start and so far the fridge is working fine.

Comparing the symptoms of my freezer with what others have posted here I think the problem must lie with the electronics. Probably the rear board?

Having read westfielder’s posts I am tempted to try replacing the capacitors on the rear board. (I have a little electronics knowledge and a half decent soldering iron). Is this the most likely cause of the problem?

Any help would be much appreciated!

    Neil.

Re: Whirlpool American Fridge Freezer broken down – help!

    Hi All,
Thanks to Broddersbaldrick it now appears that I have a working, non-flashing, non-clicking, Whirlpool fridge freezer.
With his help, expertise and endless patience with regard to the correct capacitors and part numbers, which are obviously a crucial aspect of repairing the fault, we have a success. Not only was able to keep me right with regards to parts but was also kind enough to talk me through the process and give his time to keeping me right.
No credit at all can be given to the sales staff at my local Maplins who would be well advised to seek Broddersbaldrick’s advice in the future (maybe you could offer them your services in an advisory role).
Can’t thank you enough saved me a fortune and more grey hair.
Any time you are passing Aberdeen drop in for a cold beer from the fridge!!

Re: Whirlpool American Fridge Freezer broken down – help!

Nibbly – My unit must be different as there were no screws under the tray.
I did manage to get the front of the unit off by removing the lower facia board and pulling the front of the dispenser at one corner (and waited for the plastic to snap!) 2 lugs along the bottom of the dispenser unclipped and the dispenser then slid down off some plastic hooks at the top.
That was enough excitement for one day..so I put it all back and will tackle the capacitors when I next have a minute.
    Good luck 😆

Re: Whirlpool American Fridge Freezer broken down – help!

What a huge help this thread has been – many thanks to all concerned.

I have the ticking when water is dispensing but also no ice is being made. The pipe is clear (I can blow through it) but there is no LED on the infrared sensor unit.

I have ordered 2.2uF, 0.1uF and a 1.0uF from http://www.bitsbox.co.uk/capacitors/x2caps.html – I trust these are the ones I need? If they are, I’ll see if they will put a kit together and link to it here.

Fingers crossed that the caps fix the problem with the ice maker.

    Mark.

    EDIT: Model is S20BRbb20-A/G 8586 152 15001

Re: Whirlpool American Fridge Freezer broken down – help!

Confirm that these caps worked for me perfectly and best of all – they fit perfectly.

Given how easy it is to order from Bitsbox and they ship overnight (ordered yesterday, delivered this morning) I can’t see why anyone would need to go through RS or others; no minimum buy, no size issues and no account needed. No affiliation – just a VERY happy punter.

    I ordered:

    4 x CC019 (220nF)
    3 x X20U1 (0.1uF)
    1 x X21U0 (1.0uF)

Total cost inc shipping – £4.45

No chatter from the water dispenser and my icemaker works perfectly. Many thanks to all on this forum who contributed to a solution. I am extremely grateful.

So tempted to give this a try before I splash out on a new unit, just need to eat all the food in it and take a chance, worst case is I waste £5, best case is I save hundreds.
If anyone hasthe time to do some sort of detailed ‘how to’ Haynes manual style instructions it would be fantastic, and I even think there would be a market for DIY kits including the bits and instructions.
Considering the boards are going to cost £200+ if someone was offering the bits and a DIY guide for £25 they would clean up considering how many people just on here are having problems with Whirlpool. 8)

Re: Whirlpool American Fridge Freezer broken down – help!

I have spoken to Bob at Bitsbox and he is going to put a kit together with the correct parts for the rear board. Link to it should be up very soon.

I’m not sure on the forum rules regarding commercial enterprise; given that they sell the parts then I shouldn’t think it would go down well if I or anyone else offers a service that bypasses that. Perhaps a mod could comment?

I’d be happy to do the fitting of the kit for folks pending approval of the mods. It would be on a post and return basis though.

Re: Whirlpool American Fridge Freezer broken down – help!

Bob has now posted a link for the capacitors required at the Bitsbox site

Remember: these are the ones that I used to repair my S20B RBB20-A/G; they may be different for your model but it is unlikely. From what I have read here, they are all the same.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi,

Wanted to say thanks to broddersbaldrick for advice on defrosting. Finally managed to empty fridge freezer to defrost and it seems to have done the trick – my fridge feels cool again. Fingers crossed this will last! 😛

    Thanks

hi it is the board the prob i can sell you one for 80 pound john from kitch tech thanks

    Wadey wrote:Hello all,

I’d really appreciate any help along the same lines:

My S20BRWW20 has started clicking for about 20-30 secs at a time, but seems to do it more in the evening for some reason. The clicking stops when either of the doors are opened, but resumes when they are closed. The water and ice dispensers both seem to work, although occasionally the water pulses and produces the same clicking sound.

I’m also thinking of replacing boards myself but does anyone know where to get them and how can I find out if I need both boards, as I bought it in June 2003?

I stupidly didn’t register it, nor did I take out the 8 year parts warranty. D’oh!

    Thanks for any replies,

Re: Whirlpool American Fridge Freezer broken down – help!

I have a 6 year-old Whirlpool ARC7610 frost-free fridge/freezer which has also suffered from exactly the same power supply capacitor failure as described in this thread.

In my case the capacitor was passing enough current to enable the control board to energise the compressor relay but not the defrost relay. Replacing the cheap-looking 0.68uF mains dropper capacitor (which looks identical to those pictured in one of the earlier posts) with a new X2 variant from bitsbox.co.uk has cured the problem. The old capacitor measured just 0.38uF. :eeek:

Unfortunately my F/F developed this fault a few months ago and, of course, I only noticed this thread last week. In the meantime we bought a replacement F/F out of desperation. I put the Whirlpool F/F in the garage in the hope that I could repair it at some later date. We’ll probably use it as a back-up now.

So it would appear that this problem is more wide-spread across the Whirlpool range than the thread title would suggest. Perhaps an FAQ entry is called for here?

Needless to say I’m pretty annoyed that failure of a £0.50 capacitor renders a 6 year-old F/F useless 😡 . I will, in future, try to avoid anything produced by Whirlpool and their sub-brands.

Whirlpool/D&G taken to task by trading standards

Some of you may remember the arguments I had with Whirlpool at about page 18 onwards with regard to the misselling of their D&G policies – it seems I was right and that Whirlpool/D&G are in the process of changing what they tell their customers, only after pressure being applied by Trading Standards. I’ve now had an update from Croydon Trading Standards, who deal with Whirlpool – Merton Council deal with D&G:

‘I am now in a position to give you a final update in relation to your referral to me concerning Whirlpool/D&G Policy.

Under the new Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008, they require traders not to omit or hide information, which the average consumer needs to make an informed choice.

My colleague at Merton is in talks with D&G for them to change their policy and call center wording so that they comply with these regulations with regards to the selling of their policies. I am afraid I cannot go into too much detail with you as the final wording has not yet been agreed but please be assured that the matter will be dealt with by all parties to a satisfactory conclusion’.

Thank you for bringing the matter to our attention’.

As I said all along, it wasn’t about the money for me and hopefully I’ve been true to my word – I feel vindicated that Whirlpool will have to change their ways to comply with the law, and that’s all the satisfaction I need.

I will ask to be advised of the revised wording when agreed and will post it on here.

Hi Neil, did you sort your problem yet?
There are caps on your front board too but so little room for the new current style.
One can buy the ‘correct type’ from RS and stick them to the rear of the front module. Mine has been working for months together with one i fixed in Oldham and a nice guy (Chris) in Aberdeen.
Give me a shout as per my details on page 22

Wow! Thank you Chris for your kind comments, you’re welcome! I was very pleased we got your Whirlpool working. Any problems in the future, please contact me.
P.S I’ll pop in for a coffee or maybe ‘ice tea’ with ice from your trusty Whirlpool next time I’m in Aberdeen.
    Kindest regards
