Hi Billy,
If your compressor is still getting warm / hot and the evaporator has no ice on it, your compressor is shot or the system is out of gas due to a leak. š

So I don’t need a new front board as well . How do I find out whether its the gas or the compresser ?

Hi Ronan,
To be fair to Whirlpool, they have used a manufacture in Spain and Italy to produce the boards I guess for the European market.
Itās ISPRACONTROLS who were at fault.
They make units for many other manufactures too including Serviceā¦
Yes in the early days they were guilty of fitting cheap capacitors but, there were not many alternatives and all the manufactures appliances suffered.
Not just Fridges but, Oven and Washing Machines to name but two.As times have changed, so have the board designs though some still remain cheap and cheerful.
The manufacturing process of capacitors has also changed in a huge way with material choice and construction; since 2005 the board manufactures now use better quality components all round and should last a good 5 years.
Hotpoint boards are manufactured by someone else and they still suffer cap problems on some models.
Manufactures have started using solid state chips to run the power supplies but, these chips can fail in 2 or 3 years and cause far for damage then a capacitor thatās gone open circuit.
Caps are cheap and easy to change.
Chips can be more reliable but, when they fail, the board has to be replaced; unless Iām the owner, in which case I go to long lengths to get it repaired. (Ordering a chip from China) for a Panasonic microwave.
Swings and roundabouts I guess. šDecember 9, 2009 at 10:20 am #142405broddersbaldrick

5 minutes after writing the above, I had a call to look at a 15 month old Whirlpool 20RB-3DJ that Iād been discussing for a week or so.
Flextronic in Hungary now manufacture the modules for these. At first glance, very sophisticated and full use of surface mount technology.
No more capacitor failures because there arenāt any.
(Well, not in the same sense as before)
So what was the problem?
The main power supply chip had literally blown itās top and the circuit board was fried, tracks have got hot, melted and shorted other components.
The unit had been in service for only 3 or 4 months due to house renovations.
Give me a cheap old power supply any day.
Modern technology strikes again.
A big retailer (who donāt make Chicken Korma) are willing to contribute to the repair.
For the cynics out there; quoting the Sale Of Goods Act does work and retailers are finally contributing fairly towards repairs / replacements.
Thank youDecember 9, 2009 at 11:24 am #142406paddymc

Hi Paddy, sounds like the usual ādefrostā problem.
If youāve changed all the components and your father has finally defrosted the freezer, you shouldnāt have any more problems.
Oh, yes happy Christmas to all šDecember 9, 2009 at 12:27 pm #142408paddymc

Thanks to a tipoff from Ozzy1 I found this forum. I’d been posting elsewhere in vain. Thanks mate! if here in Oz too, and my S26 had the madly chattering relays and flickering lights, and was slowly getting worse. The ice and water dispensers had recently stopped working too. Read through the whole sorry saga, bought the capacitors opened it up and fixed it. In my case it was the caps on the front board that made the difference. Of course, I’d started with the back board first. An extra 30 minutes, but probably not wasted time.
One question. Can anyone tell me why the temperature display only shows the temp you’ve set the fridge and freezer to be, rather than the temp they actually are? Unless the freezer’s been off a while and the temps risen to -6, I think. Not very useful!

Last night I decided to have ago at swapping out the capacitors from the front board. I had the flickering display, clicking buzzer, no ice machine and flashing light when using the water dispenser.
I used the 2uf capacitor from the bitsbox website having read here that 2x 1 uf capacitors in parallel worked for others.
I have had a partial success.
The clicking is now reduced significantly, no longer is it like a machie gun, but it is still clicking.
I have left it over night, and the ice machine has produced ice, and dispenses it. I have also discovered that the fridge was in vacation mode before, but now I have been able to switch it back to normal mode, previously pressing this button had no effect. I can now set the fridge temperature also.
Also I can now put the fridge in standby and turn back on, as previously it wouldn’t always turn back on easily, and would require a few hours of pressing the button to get it back on.
With hindsight it probably needs the 2.2uf capacitor as the flickering suggests the capacitor is under spec.
