Re: Whirlpool American Fridge Freezer broken down – help!

Just had the enginner around to replace the rear board. The ice maker and front light was still clicking. I really did need to replace both boards. Whirlpool have agreed to meet the cost which is really nice of them. On Another note, I hear that Whirlpool have been referred to the OFT for their service practice and spares cost. These boards cost around £4 each. The price fixing on service and spares amounts to a cartel. I guess we will see what happens. Thanks for the advice.

Paolo, If you’re replacing the board you will require both boards due to the age of your machine.
If you’re trying the fix that’s been posted then you only need to do the rear board.

Dented Porsche, thanks for the quick reply, yes I’m going to try the fix, I have ordered the capacitors from RS, not sure which of the 4 to change so I’m thinking is it worth changing all 4? I have clicking occaisonally and spurting water when ice maker is on (currently turned off), cooling is OK though.

    dufferuk wrote:Hi All,

Thought as this forum has been useful to me in the past I would shed some light on this problem. My machine suffered from this exact problem this weekend and I have found what fails on the board and fixed mine.

Over time it appears that the capacitor that makes up part of the firing circuit to the Compressor relay fails. There are four relays on board, three black, one orange (its the orange one that we are interested in as this enables the compressor). The relays are enabled from the microprocessor on the board via a triac controlling the switching of live onto a diode bridge and through a resistor and capacitor on the neutral side. Over a period of time the capacitor will break down and won’t be able to hold enough energy to fire the relay (door water solenoid problem) or enabling the cooling via the compressor.

The capacitors are four on a row, white in colour and have written on them .22/10 1.70MKP 250V~ this means that they are .22uf (micro farad or 220nf nano farad) with a 10{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} tolerance and are rated to 250vac.

What I know is that holding the PCB upright with the three black relays furthest from you, the four capacitors will be nearest to you. The far LEFT capacitor is to do with the icemaker ice eject mechanism, the far right capacitor is for the compressor. To test that this is your problem swap these two capacitors (outer two) and see if you machine starts to cool and that the compressor cuts in and out.

If this works for you replace the bad capacitor with a new one either from RS components or maplins (http://www.rswww.com or http://www.maplin.com). Make sure that you get the same capacitance but the voltage can be higher without any effect (I replaced mine with a 500vac one)

Please ensure that whislt working on the fridge that you have isolated the power supply and if you are not qualified call an engineer!! You will need a soldering iron and some solder to fix this.

I hope that this is helpfull to someone and should save you alot of money.

THanks for the help you’ve provided in this forum, it’s been of great use.

I’d have changed all 4 of the capacitors as illustrated in the instructions above, as I thought it’s just as easy to change 4 as it is to do just the 1.

Unfortunately after all of that it is still faulty, the symptoms of my freezer is that the panel display is permanently flashing approx 2 time a second and when you try to opperate the the ice dispensor the motor and lights pulsate approx 4 time a second and generally no ice is dispensed.

My model of freezer is a whirlpool S20B RSB21 American fridge freezer

    Service codes 8586 151 15001
    11 0409 021362

Now I did notice that there are simular capacitors on the panel pcb, is it worth replacing these to try and cure the problem, or is it more complicated than that?

Any help in this matter would be much appreciated as I don’t fancy shelling out £200 for some boards that could be easly be repaired.

    Thanks for your help Mike

Hard to say whether changing them would cure the problem.
The “fix” has worked for some but not for all so there’s more than one fault on the boards that cause the same problem.
For the cost of the capacitors it may be worth a try.
If it doesn’t work then you’ve no option but to replace the boards.
My own machine suffered the clicking/flashing lights for a week, then it cured itself and has been fine since. Mind you, I’ve got spare boards for mine, just didn’t get around to changing them.

Well, I replaced the 4 capacitors on the rear board and I’ve still got clicking, anything else I can change? What about on the front board, in fact where is the front board? I can’t even find it!
If these boards only cost £4 each to make, does anybody know who makes them? if so can you buy them directly from the manufacturer.

Its on the erm front 😆
Its the whole panel where you select ice and dispence ice and water. It is not servicable like the rear panel.
Power off first before attempting any repair :plug:

Sorry, don’t know where the boards are made. Even if you found out who made them they probably wouldn’t have the software on them to run your machine. I think you’re going to have to “bite the bullet” and buy new boards. As they are so expensive I’d recommend getting a service engineer in to check it out. Click on repairs@ on the left column.

Whirlpool parts guy told me the boards come from Italy…

The machines are built in Italy and spares are shipped from there. However, I seem to recall a sticker on one board which had made in Hungary (or was it Romania?) on it.

Ok, so replaced the relay, no change. There are stickers on the boards that give the manufactures name, ITW Ispracontrols. Anybody know how to contact them direct? failing that where is the cheapest source to obtain replacement boards.
Incidentally what ius the long term prognosis if I decide to live with the clicking?

    Cheers

Re: Whirlpool American Fridge Freezer broken down – help!

    Hi
Have a similar problem of chattering relay and flashing temp display on Whirlpool AFG7060 freezer, Service Number 8549 706 15000. After a few hours the freezer stops working.
I have just replaced the sensor but the problem is still there with the new sensor. The reason I thought was the sensor was that it works perfectly on Fast freeze and deduced that the ff function bypasses the sensor!! The only problem with leaving on ff is that I can’t regulate the temperature and it goes upto -24 which is the limit of the display panel. In effect the temp could go to say -40 !!! Am I correct?

If the control board needs replacing ten I don’t think it is viable at a cost of over £100. Already spent £30 on the sensor! The freezer is about 3 years old.

If anyone out there knows a cheap solution, please let me know.

    Thanks

Re: Whirlpool American Fridge Freezer broken down – help!

I have all the problems previously experienced by others on this forum. Plus one additional problem-the compressor is permenently operating-even when I switch the unit onto standby. The only way I have been able to properly defrost the freezer is by disconnecting from the mains. I have therefore concluded that I must do something. Like everyone else I would like to avoid the cost of replacing both boards. So two questions: 1. Is the compressor problem going to be fixed if I replace the two control boards? 2. Should I try replacing the capacitors first? My model number is: S25B RSB 31. The two numbers on the rating plate are: 8586 166 15010, 11 0309 016520.
