I agree with everything you say, Brodders seems to have taken exception to my last post, which i fail to understand. The most puzzling is he thought I should have announced on the board that he was away for 3 months. Not knowing whether his house was empty, of if someone could work out where he lives, I decided that it was not for me to tell everyone he was in Kuwait for obvious security reasons.

Hi,
Have read through this massive thread, but am still unsure what is wrong with my Whirlpool fridge freezer – can you help me please? I cannot use a soldering iron – but I am a mum with two young babies and I need my fridge to work!!
Whirlpool Model S20B RSS31 – A/G
8586 151 15010
110328 039407Last summer after advice on this thread, I replaced the rear circuit board which solved all the loud clicking and relay issues instantly.
Then today out of the blue, the front panel temperatures are flashing rapidly. The fridge and freezer are keeping their correct temperatures but the display is flashing non stop and there is a quiet rapid clicking noise from the front diaply panel.
I have changed water filter, and have pressed reset button. Have turned fridge off at mains and back on. Still same issue.
Can anyone advise me please? Is it the front board and can anyone help me to replace any capacitors as I haven’t got a clue.
Best Wishes, Nicola

Tommo50 wrote:Okay, another frustrated Whirlpool American fridge freezer owner joins this very helpful thread! 😕 I suspect I have the common problem, but just need to check.
Model is a September 2006 purchased FRBB36AF20/2. Service number is 8686 158 15030.
The entire machine went dead at less than 12 months and had the PCB replaced under warranty. The repair man warned me about capacitor problems, and I might even still have the old board in the shed waiting for 4 new components.
It’s now started playing up again. The freezer temp alarm goes off and the food is softening. It tries, but cannot hold temperature. We’ve cleared it out and it can now hold -18C. The fridge side thinks it is holding 2C, but an independent thermometer says 10-12C. The fan is running and stops when the door is opened. I can’t hear the compressor, but it might be drowned out by the noise of the fan. If push comes to shove, I’ll pull it out of the alcove and check behind to listen what’s working and what isn’t. The water dispenser is working and (with the freezer empty) the ice maker seems to be squeezing a few out.
Two questions. Firstly, is my problem the PCB, and will the standard repair work? If not, what is it? Secondly, if the old PCB was completely dead, can I swap capacitors on that and have a go, or was the original problem more serious and I should just chuck that board away and do a repair on the one in the fridge?
Grateful for any help and advice, many thanks.
Bump. Can anyone help with this please?
In the abscence of any replies Ive gone ahead and ordered full set of 9 capacitors and 4 relays for the rear board, including some caps from RS that are actually small enough to fit on the board. If it all works, I’ll post part numbers later.

hello to all who are reading have read these posts so far,in my opinion far too many for a very exspensive fridge/freezer which im sure many others thought would/should be working fine for many many years.

hi penguin45,
purachased “this” before the other and it didnt cure my problems. yes stopped the clicking noises but not the continuous flashing of temperatures( bout 6 per sec) and flashing light when dispensing water, wished id bought the other first (and saved myself a few quid but then there you go 😥 😥 ) which contains all the caps to fix BOTH pcbs with easy to follow instructions with diagrams.charlieboyy 😆

scdoubleu wrote:I have a 6 year-old Whirlpool ARC7610 frost-free fridge/freezer which has also suffered from exactly the same power supply capacitor failure as described in this thread.
In my case the capacitor was passing enough current to enable the control board to energise the compressor relay but not the defrost relay. Replacing the cheap-looking 0.68uF mains dropper capacitor (which looks identical to those pictured in one of the earlier posts) with a new X2 variant from bitsbox.co.uk has cured the problem. The old capacitor measured just 0.38uF. :eeek:
Unfortunately my F/F developed this fault a few months ago and, of course, I only noticed this thread last week. In the meantime we bought a replacement F/F out of desperation. I put the Whirlpool F/F in the garage in the hope that I could repair it at some later date. We’ll probably use it as a back-up now.
So it would appear that this problem is more wide-spread across the Whirlpool range than the thread title would suggest. Perhaps an FAQ entry is called for here?
Needless to say I’m pretty annoyed that failure of a £0.50 capacitor renders a 6 year-old F/F useless 😡 . I will, in future, try to avoid anything produced by Whirlpool and their sub-brands.

Hello all,
First post for me here and I’m supriesed I found it. I’ve read threw the entire thread (what a thread!) but I’ve not seen any follow ups from this post.
This is the FF I have (ARC7610) and I’m wanting to know if anyone can shed light on which capacitors I need to replace. The fridge and freezer have been sporadically not working for a week now. It may not be these, but at a few quid (I’m fairly confident with a soldering iron) to test doesn’t seem too much to me. Can anyone advise on which capacitors I’d need and does anyone have a link to a picture or a circuit digram for my model?
Thanks all
What a great site.

charlieboy and broders,
thanks so much for offering to do my soldiering by post! Fabulous! Am very grateful!
Can you tell me which parts I need to take off/out and order? And then send to you?
This is little tiny clicks and the temps flashing non-stop (no beeping or relay clicking though) so I am thinking it is the front board – is this correct?

So Broders, you are lurking but haven’t bothered to reply to my post above or email. I am still puzzled why you think I should have told the whole world that you were going to Kuwait for 3 months. They would have been queing up to burgle your house!

Blimey, I would never have thought that after posting the answer to how to fix your American fridge freezer over four years ago that this thread would still be running!! 😀
Update for me, after four years my original repaired board is still running like new, I now have the pulsing front panel as of last weekend, and thanks to all of you on here, I don’t have to diagnose it myself this time!!
Keep up the good work!

Hi
I’d appreciate any advise that you can give. I have a Whirlpool S25D RBB33 fridge freezer and the icemaker has stopped producing. When it is switched on I get a periodic clicking noise which lasts about 30 seconds or so from the bottom of the freezer.
Whirlpool customer care suggest that I need to replace both control board at a price over £450 – this seems rather excessive.

and another one…. I’ve got a S20B RSS31-A/G – the display constantly flickers & clicks and if you try to fix it by pressing standby you can’t get the bugger to unstandby itself unless you switch it off at the mains for 10 mins. It’s been doing it for about 3 years now.
Ice dispenser doesn’t work, but am not bothered about it. Temperature of both fridge & freezer are fine. It’s just the clicking that’s irritating.
So… is it the front or back board (or both) that would possibly need fixing?
I don’t think I’d be too handy with a soldering iron so was thinking of removing the board(s) and taking them to a tv repair shop. Would that be a cunning plan?

If you contact Brodders on the listing he may do the soldering for you (he offered to do it for me when I bought the kit).
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Whirlpool-Fridge- … 4cedf61851
The only thing you would need to do is live without the fridge/freezer for a short while whilst the cards are in the post and being repaired.
I am no expert at soldering, but even I found it pretty easy. The hardest part was the niggling doubt as I removed the old parts (The fridge/freezer was still working) as once I had removed the parts, it would not work for sure any more. I hoped that the new bits would fix it, whjich it did thankfully as the real boss would have given me a hard time for not simply paying Whirlpool.

A big thank you to Brodders for all his time spent in helping me at long last getting my F/F working like new again.
If anyone is still having trouble with there F/f my advice would be to solder the back board yourself either buy the kit from on here or from Brodders once done then send the front board to Brodders for repair the F/F WILL work fine without the front panel being attached you will only be with out the front panel for around 48 hours anyway.
