Yes I saw that. Imagine it will be a sub-division of Merloni rather like Blomberg for Beko. If not, maybe I could give them a print-out from my accounts of 10 years ago.

Re: One For The Tracked Engineer

They have been out there for years. However any decent tracker system will put a marker on the screen if there is a transmission error.

All my vans have trackers, they are mainly used when customers are chasing appointment times or engineer progress. Apart from when an engineer draws attention to himself, I rarely look at them.

I had an issue regards something similar with the signal being “compromised” I quickly identified the problem & dealt with it.

Then progressed to the Sherpa, OMG what a pile of c**p, I think SWEB and all Electricity Boards had to buy BL vehicles for some reason, I think it was just before I got made redundant in 92 that i finally got a Transit !! 🙂

The vans depended on what make car the Fleet purchaser fancied at the time, not a company car, but he would get a cracking discount. I won’t name him.

When I started on SWEB the Electricians vans were Ford Thames, 3 speed column change (Before the Transit) The engine was under a cover between the 2 front seats, where the apprentice was allowed to sit. No seatbelts. Sales reps had Ford prefect 100E cars, meter readers and installation inspectors etc Ford 100E or Morris Minor vans. No heater, radio, nothing to protect those in the front seats regards items thrown forward, not even a headlining in the front. The wipers worked off the inlet manifold, would hardly move when the van was pulling, and would go mad as soon as you de-accelerated.

In 1965/6 they moved over to the Bedford CA 4-speed column change, seatbelts fitted by now, nobody used them, and you could drive around with the doors slid back. Used to be able to park in the Parade Minehead with the door wide open, keys in the ignition and think nothing of it. The smaller vehicles were replaced with Vauxhall Viva derivitives. There were no appliance engineers as such, everyone had a go at fixing things.

The J4 vans, and Marinas for the appliance repairers came into effect in 1973. By then specific appliance repairers had evolved. These vans were painted Grey & Green. They were invisible if parked by the roadside, and those on street lighting or the road gangs had no visiblity clothing issued, just navy blue overalls. The humble traffic cone was unheard of.

The Sherpas in red were after my time, but I gather were luxury at the time.

Re: Tried to advertise with a local directory

As long as the directory refunds you I suggest heave a sigh of relief.

Might pay you to suggest they cover your costs though, but to be honest I would just notch it up as experience & move on.

If there is a rival company out there that are prepared to monopolise this publication, and moreover the directory who has allowed it to happen, they deserve each other.

Think about it, what sort of advertising journal must they be to accept one & only one trader in a specific category? They need to fill their pages, and the more single and diverse adverts the better. Also it will make the publication look thin and biased.

Even if the tub rear/tub front/drum/seals/pulley/heater etc were all ordered up front, still would not be able to use a made up tub/drum, what about the fixings to hold the 2 halves together and weights bolts etc?

Reading the first post, the machine looks like it is now in the workshop, even less reason to build up a complete assembly.

As everyone says, swings & roundabouts. We have some warranty contracts that only pay £42 no matter what and we have to guarantee the labour on the whole product for 3 Months, that is 90 days. I have one major service agreement that pays me just over £32 and I have to warranty that for 60 days.

Distance is not a deciding factor either when we cover 4 counties from South Bristol to South Devon.

The fact is you just take it on the chin and don’t waste your time getting stressed about it. Furthermore, if you try & bung bits at it, all you do is draw attention to yourself, and end up with a storeroom of useless parts you pay tax on.

squadman wrote:Alex, sorry for being thick but how does pre authorisation work ?

Same as handing your card over in a hotel on check-in, or at a lot of pubs when ordering food. The card is run through, authorised and the amount put on at the end. Different service providers do it slightly differently, so may pay to read the instructions with your terminal.

I’d say leave it all there to prove a point. Regretfully this has turned into a rant, and I feel could give a very poor reflection of the users of this medium. However taking away some of the content will confuse the string of posts, and as made clear nornmally posts are not edited/removed unless borders have been breached regards decency etc. I will say though, this must have been close.

Sadly I really do remember Muffin the Mule ( no smutty remarks please ) The Flowerpot Men and Andy Pandy. 😥
    Young Jim.

It was actually Pugh! Pugh! Barney McGrew! Cuthbert! Dibble! Grubb! Barney McGrew being the only one where the first name was used.

What about the “Woodentops” can’t leave them out.

Black & White telly, with the intermission. Nothing broadcast in the daytime except Childrens hour, and closed down at 10.30 every night. Had to walk across the room to change channels by turning a heavy dial. And I remember when we had ITV, meant another aerial. We could tell who had both channels because on the chimney there was the H type for BBC and the X type for ITV.

It was a ‘cult’ programme in the same way as the later Magic Roundabout among some of us ‘teenagers’ 😯

Had links to Noggin the Nog. 😀

Oliver Postgate. As well as Clangers & Noggin the Nog we had Bagpuss, Ivor the Engine, Pogles Wood. He was a bit of a political animal and never concealed his opinions.

Sadly Oliver died just before Christmas, but his sons have inherited some of the skills to pass on to future generations.

You can now enjoy the “Smelly Bill” series as well as a “Yeti in my Shed” by younger son Dan Postgate.

If you want to take this further, the real genius was was Gordon Murray who was the pioneer of animation with Clay Models on Camberwick Green, Trumpton & Chigley. Now get this, I have the whole collection from 1967 on DVD. (I need to get out more) This was around the same time as Ardman animation with Peter Lord, but they hadn’t really taken off with Morph just yet.
