My apologies for the delay but I have been waiting for the manual to reappear but it seems to have been mislaid.

Gone are the days when a Frost Free Fridge was built like a Brick Outhouse.

Now they are more like an Enviro loo

Once the manual is what you used to hang on a nail for re-use

Now you need the correct paperwork.

So without the manual you are pushing the proverbial S*** uphill

So until the manual is found:

1/. The defrost you are talking about I assume is the one initiated by the machine (not a disconnect the power and clear manually)

2/. The defrost is initiated by the lower power board after factors including run time and the number of door openings

3/. The sensors are basically bullet proof and would be the last item to be suspected

4/. Not knowing how you ascertained that the element is working also causes a problem in diagnosing the fault

5/. How long is it before the unit fails after a defrost?

6/. Does the defrost cycle if automatic completely remove all “ice”?

7/. Does the “ice” form as frost or as ice blocks?

8/. Where is the “ice” forming?

An experienced technician can tell by the look and location of the “ice” what the causes could be however they can be many and varied and possibly multiple.

Without definitive information I cannot possibly indicate what your particular problem might be.

    Things to check however include:

    a/. Door Seal

    b/. Drainage

    c/. Element

    d/. Defrost thermostat

Your only other option is to replace the Power board.

Trust you have done a counter claim.

Are you a member of any Organisations including the Chamber of Commerce who could assist.

A visit to a solicitor could clarify the issues.

The argument that you did’nt cancel the contract is I think of some worth however I’d concentrate on the maths that if you have to pay for the repairs to her machine then she has had a repair for free and no court could logically see others being responsible for costs she ultimately has to bear somewhere down the line

I often use the web for others opinions on subjects I know little about and that area might help

    i.e. http://www.marketingprofs.com(look for similar such as http://legalknowhow.com/forum/policy.asp & http://www.excite.co.uk/directory/Socie … and_Forums

All your communications before hand with the oppposition should also have been used to score points with the magistrate. You should have couched them in terms that you know would reinforce your argument with the magistrate as these would be brought into evidence

Also I’ve always said a bit of paper carries more weight than a verbal statement so make sure you have plenty of handouts to the magistrate and the opposition to reinforce your argument when he weighs up the facts.

A court is just a debating chamber with the best speaker winning the argument according to the adjudicator (the magistrate).

If you have trouble communicating your thoughts then take in a easel and butchers paper (helped me win against the police over a speeding fine)

Also a friend can help or maybe even run the argument as the third person is often better able to communicate an argument.

If you haven’t yet done a counterclaim then it’s your opportunity to correct any ommissions.

An old saying of mine is
“Life is a game…. Play to win”
also “Life is like roller coaster…. You pay your money, you take the ride. (so you might not like the outcome but give it your best shot)

LG is the old Goldstar brand and as such they never had a very good name.

Rebirthing and Globalization has given them a new lease on life and their greater range of products are now certainly giving other manufacturers a run for their money.

Our local Consumer magazine in OZ rates many products however I don’t know if they have tested the products you have mentioned.

    http://www.choice.com.au

Any Choice tests are however a bit tongue in cheek as they only test the functionality of the product and not the ultimate reliability

The only data Choice give on reliability are readers surveys that indicate the number of repairs that those who have bothered to respond to the survey have incurred and of course a subjective comment on whether or not the consumer would recommend the product based on there particular experience.

We do however use these Choice surveys ourself to assist us to analyise brands that will produce income due to

A: Quantity in the market place

    B: Unreliablity

and we are gearing up more and more for LG

Of course cheaper labour overseas and a larger population base means a plethora of products are constantly coming onto all market.

Because of the constant stream of new products, the lack of historical data due to products always being replaced/updated, the fact that LG are only relatively new, and the fact that Choice do not test for reliability over the lifetime of a product no advice can be given as to the suitability of the products.

However I assure you that products are now not made to last and I could easily give you examples.

This off course means that you product will need servicing.

The downside is that we have trouble servicing LG due to the factors mentioned above plus the unavailability of parts meaning machines only 5 years old are having to be written off.

    My advice is:

1/: Don’t be the Guinea pig for new products (Products that have been on the market for some time have generally proven themselves)

2/: Look past the bells and whistles

3/: Look at local made products first as the product is likely to have local made spares and hence availabilty is likely to be better

4/: Look at local brand products. (Although many source overseas you have a local company with a local commitment)

5/: The cooking appliance does not produce the product. (Your skill is what makes the meal)

6/: Always seek a externally vented rangehood.

7/: Induction cooktops will require special set of pots/ pans and frypans.

8/: Length of warranty is a good indication of the faith a manufacturer places in their product.

9/: Extended warranty can be a great insurance provided you are using the product to the maximum and the product is new to the market place.

I invite my colleagues in the UK to add to or to modify this list.
(I note that I believe the greatest differences in the UK and OZ market are their larger range of products, their greater dependance on extended warranty insurance, and the greater use of third parties to restrict/modify the client repairer relationship
