Yep – you will have to install a modem. these are dirt cheap now (£7 or so for a 56k PCI). Your modem must also be connected through a broadband filter same as a phone.

Taking the heads of the rivets with an angle grinder and a cutting disk is a lot easier than drilling as these rivets are hard. Also if the rivets start to turn with the drill (which they usually do) it becomes hopeless.

Andy I am not criticising Goose in any way, like you say it is a very generous gesture and i do appreciate that. Whether customers do is another matter.

I still think that you are a pack of softies though but what the hell, the world would be a better place if their were more people like that would’nt it?

    Re: Guaranteed Repairs

The customer has only paid for one part for one year (if thats your period of warranty), thats it! To extend the guarantee beyond this is crazy business practice from any point of view. Where does it end if the parts keep going faulty.

You guys are too soft. I have been doing this job for almost 25 years and i have not paid a penny for advertising at all for the last 20 years (i have been given free ones). Almost every week i accquire new customers from recomendations. I have always given the same warranty as the supplier and as far as i know have never lost a customer because of this. People just accept that’s how it is.

Be nice to your customers and treat them fairly but don’t screw yourselves in the process, thats my advice.

    Goose

Do you mean that you gave her a further guarantee of twelve months on the new element that you fitted for free?

    Re: Guaranteed Repairs

I see your point Andy but I have found most of my customers never even ask about guarantees and when i tell them there is six months warranty on a motor or whatever they seem pleasantly suprised.

Why open yourself to more risk than is necessary?

    Re: Guaranteed Repairs

The simplest way of tackling this problem (which I have always done) is to provide the same parts guarantee to the customer as your supplier gives to you. How can you have a higher liability than he or the manufacturer has?

Yep – server is off at the moment as they are updating the web site. You need to be signed up with ISDAL to get access as Dave says you need a user name and password.

Sounds like a short circuit triac that drives one of the solonoid valves. If you find out which valve it is letting water in this might help:

    Edge connector CNE

    1 Solonoid valves common
    2 Cold valve
    3 Door lock light
    4 Hot valve
    5 Fab con valve

Trace the track back from the edge connector to find the relevant triac. They look like small transistor packages and are about 1 A i think. The common device is a MAC 97A8. A short across two of the pins is usually easy enough to spot.

The only thing that makes me doubt this, is that the pump and motor are not working on spin and i cannot think why they should not be with this fault as as far as i know there is no feedback to the controller to signal this condition (but there might be!) It might be worth changing the triac anyway its only a quick job if you can get one from an old module.

Failing that why not use the other module if its working OK. You might have just got two models with eeproms holding the same data. Tony at EMW could confirm this.

It is true that many people who have high IQ’s and may attain a high level of academic achievement are hopeless when it comes to practical skills. Also it does not guarantee common sense as Brian notes, as clever people (on paper) can do the stupidest things at times, (as we all can) and can offer some very bad advice.

Knowledge and wisdom (the ability to do – or advise – the best action in a given situation) are not the same thing, and wisdom is certainly not dependant on the level of a persons intellect.

For someone like our friend to belittle those whose talents are more practical is just blind stupidity. What good is knowledge or design unless someone is able to transform it into something useful.

In the great scheme of things we all have our individual talents and a role in life and as such should value each others skills no matter how menial they may appear to be.

So since we work with mechanical devices why shouldn’t we be labelled as engineers?

No reason whatsoever. By definition 2, anybody who drives a car is an engineer.

    Engineer:-

    1. One who is trained or professionally engaged in a branch of engineering.
    2. One who operates an engine.
    3. One who skillfully or shrewdly manages an enterprise.

Just shows how stupid matey boys arguments were. He was probably by definition an engineer long before he ‘qualified’ to be one.

Just as a matter of interest Ken, how is it possible to lock someone out from the public side of whitegoods as most IP addresses are dynamically assigned when logging on to your ISP ie. he will have a different address when he logs on again.

Re: Engineer – What’s An Engineer

I recollect this topic being discussed in another thread some moons ago and it was agreed that correctly we should be called technicians!!

Having said that the term ‘engineer’ is very broad in its scope. eg. the men who drove the old steam trains were called ‘engineers’ and i don’t think many of them would have had a University degree (but i might be wrong).

You could argue that they (the ‘real engineers’) have hijacked the term and perverted its true meaning as it is evident that their definition is not the same as in the English dictionaries.

This person is obviously very proud of his achievements and does not want to be dragged down to the same level as a humble washing machine repair man – bless him!

Of course there is also the possibility that he was a successful wind up merchant – some people do get their kicks like this 😉 I suppose we shall never really know…………..

    Re: Mistral Mystery

I fitted a new thermistor five days ago and it seems OK. Thanks very much for that Dave, much appreciated 😀

I still don’t know why it was still defrosting OK though, every other faulty evap thermistor i have come across affected the defrost and blocked the evaporator. Which is why i discounted the possiblity.

Maybe it is possible for only part of the temperature range to be affected on a thermistor?
