ParticipantRe: QER Electronics
I agree QER tend to be a bit pricey nowadays, I’ts nearly the cost of a full repair even if it turns out to be fault not found on testing 😥 .

ParticipantRe: Ah, the good old days.
I recall in the early 90’s working at Hotpoint whem I called to a REALLY old
frontloader (possibly 1800 series maybe pre that) that must have been nearly 20 years old then. The customer, an old Italian guy, was livid. ‘I thought Hotpoint were a good make….how long are these things meant to last’. I was puzzled to say the least as to why he still had it if it gave him so much trouble to which he replied.’I didn’t expect it to go wrong already’. This was its first ever call :rotfl: . That scenario wil neverhappen again .

Course you can… elastic band, tape, silicon sealant and hope. Anything will fit then. Believe me ….I’ve followed him up on a call 😯 .

Struggling to keep up………
I thought you couldn’t fly 😯
Seriously if I was in a situation where I could ‘ride it out’ it would be great but the uncertainty worries me. Give it a few months and see what it’s like then but then what happens if it doesn’t pick up, deeper in doo doo and for what? I must admit for a good while now the set wage at the end of the month seems very appealing as does switching off at 5pm.
Don’t get me wrong, I love doing what I do and being my own boss is the greatest, BUT it’s one of those times, I feel, that a little sacrifice is needed (not giving up my band for anyone though 😉 ).
I might even join helo at Comet 🙂TC

ParticipantRe: Time for a rethink.
Yep. Given it a lot of thought over the last few weeks.
I feel I made a bad decision to drop some of my advertising ( Phonebook and Tomsons) this year as they always did pretty poorly when I monitored calls. I think jettisoning them and with the gloomy economy forecasts it was just bad timing all round.
That and the fact that I don’t really want to be dragging my heels much longer, so at 45 I need to decide on’t future a little.
If it was just me (ah the old days) I’d just sell up , buy a little terrace and ride it out, but we overstretched a little on this house plus with our littlun things will get tight if I don’t act now.
Ah but there’s still a years advertising and old customers to help out at weekends if I do opt out completely 😉 .You never know, your next bus into town could have me driving it helo 😉

ParticipantRe: Belling SGE12XUK ?
:rolls:
Now that I’ve sorted out parts from stock etc, rung the customer back to arrange the call he lets me know all the information ..Oh yes when the other engineer came he said it was an Indesit and there was too much play in the drum to do anything with it :bang: . WHY NOT TELL ME THAT IN THE FIRST PLACE YOU PRAT!!!!!
I’m just glad I didn’t set off on the 15 mile trip and find out.Customers eh :rolls:

Cheers Chris,
Can’t understand why someone would turn that job down on an integrated machine told the guy it couldn’t be done. The crosspiece job itself is probably worth it to the customer.TC

Whats the fair and honest way of dealing with the situation of turning up to a later machine that you start to scratch your head at whilst looking at do you charge callout charge or labour fee?
When the need arises just be honest with them.I usually explain that most manufacturers offer the small independants little technical advice, and I will come back shortly after visiting the engineers friend (UKW 😉 ). If nothing is forthcoming, refer them back to the manufacturer reminding them that a hefty call out charge could be imminent 😥 .
In that situation I don’t ask for a fee, but most right minded customers still see you as an honest tradesman because you tried your damndest to help them out, and aloy insist on paying for your time as well!!!TC

ParticipantRe: ISE2 fault
Tried interlock same problem. Basically board locked up doing the same whether ready light on or programme light. Pumps out constantly then starts to let water in at the same time. Changed board and pressure switch and now works fine, with a little help from Sean 😉 .
