Re: working on gas cookers information

We have always done repairs to dual fuel appliances, it is within the laws and regulations, i also consider the fact that we are competent enough not to damage or make the appliance unsafe and if we were to by accident affect the safty of the gas side then we consider ourselves competent enough to get a gas safe person to visit and correct.
Also i believe that not all appliance engineers are Qualified electricians, so maybe we should ban non qualified electricians from touching the electrical parts of appliances.
I can see nothing wrong by working with in the regulations and laws and ultimately using best practice when doing so.

Did you know that you could pass your driving test on your 17th birthday and the next day race off down the motorway in a Ferrari, perfectly legal, madness yes, simple madness. The world is full of idiots that have the capability of killing someone one way or another.

i agree Whirl4, this is now looking very bad for DASA, the facts are there and they dont appear to be acting upon them, Ade has tried to get an invite to explain his personal concerns to DASA at their meeting and he has been rebuffed, this from my point of view makes membership of a Trade Body pointless as there is companies out there using DASA as a marketing tool in their adverts who are not members at all, and some using it as association, the question is are these companies/individuals following the DASA code of practice, have they been asscessed by DASA, what value is DASA membership now?

Surely the DASA chairman will respond, and i do not see why this forum cannot be used as his platform to put the record straight, as it would be more cost affective and be seen by more of us.

Why bother posting at all martin if you are just going to take the pi##? What you have actually said is just how the customer feels and just why our trade gets bad publicity.

And you are wrong to advertise same day service if you dont do it!

    Re: 0800 Repair

I think the main point here is that the consumer should be able to trust the advert that he is reading, and that is Ade’s point, this particular advertising seems to be full of exagerations and untruths. So what we have done is have 2 trade bodies that businesses can be a member of and then follow the COP, this then gives the customer some form of help and makes them feel secure in the choice they have made if the company they have chosen is a member of the trade body. If it turns out that the engineer/company in their jouse is not in fact a member of a trade body they have lost that security they felt they had, this is clearly wrong. What will happen is that the paying public will soon get to an opinion that companies being members of a trade body is meaning less as membership is being promoted by companies wrongly so the trade body becomes defunct, we shouldnt let this happen and we should all back Ade in what he is saying and trying to sort out, why DASA havnt allowed him to attend the meeting is beyond me and conclusions can be drawn from that.
DASA needs to sort this out.

I will add my twopenneth again, not that anyone cares what i say, but i am fully with Ade on this and i dont see why he shouldnt keep going on about it, what they are doing is clearly wrong. I just keeping holding on to the hope that one day there will be a trade body that would have the resources to take these companies to task, and clean up our profession.

    Re: 0800 Repair

That is only your views thought Ken, i think Lee and myself are talking about so called engineers that simply dont have the basic ability to even do simple fault finding or even removing the machine to repair, if the guy in Lee’s example had tested the machine properly on completion of his “repair” he would have heard and corrected the back being on incorrectly, that is not a error that a competent engineer will do, its a incompetent engineer! All experienced angineers will sometimes make a best guess on some repairs but we are talking about sub standard work and sub standard practice.

Its not just 0800, company engineers or independents, I get calls like these everyday fom all the above who have failed to repair basic faults or even access the appliance properly, most of our industry is full of idiots, greedy muppets and d888 leads.

Today a noisy W/M that an independent engineer (JTM appointed) fitted a belt to, I get called and find the muppet put the rear panel on the wrong way, pulley nut worn through the recess that was touching it.

We need something more than DASA or the WTA that’s for sure.

Basic school qualifications would be a start.

Totally agree Lee, we are exactly the same as you, and like you we dont want “hero” status for simply doing what the customer asks of us, we just want the clowns removing.
Ignore Martin as he seems to find everything a joke at the moment and i do believe he is taking the p##s.

Ken, you are a wizz with websites, can you not add to the WTA website a page where members can upload copies of their Qualifications, insurance etc, or they could fax you a copy that you could upload. Then on the members page next to each member there could be a tab that a customer could click which allowed them to see that members skill set and documents?

    Re: 0800 Repair

The fact is that it isnt right to advertise your something your not, FACT and that is what concerns Ade.

But as has been pointed out, the unscrupulus amongst us will do and say anything if it got them extra work.

Lets hope that anyone that is a member of a trade association is not telling half truths as regards their membership, otherwise all hell will break out. And the reason i say that is because(as was pointed out to me) not all memebrs would have been visited and checked out.

    Re: 0800 Repair

I actually agree with what Ade is saying, it just isnt right that some one is adverticing that they are something or a member of something when in fact its a lie, but i feel that is something that has been a fact of life for as long as i can remember, very similar to being a member of a trade body and not having all the criteria for that said membership, it happens and as has been pointed out to me before, it wont change.

So what you going to do Ade? this is your personal mission so why dont you ask DASA to sort out and if not hand it over to your solicitors to challenge the isssue in court.
