Well, at least he’s not getting any extra cash from Scotland then for that. 😉

Oh dear, some of the rumours going about over this are a bit strong so let me just say straight off that there’s no evidence to support them at this time that I can dig up.

The first one is that there is “irregularities” in the expense accounts that knock up to over £100K, nice to know where my money went if that’s true! This may also explain some of the other little gems we’d discovered where NESN had been paid for work and we hadn’t been. In some cases some people still haven’t been AFAIK!

The next is something that we’d alluded to months ago in that there has been some dodgy dealing going on with shares in other companies and the allocation of postcodes to certain “preffered members”.

All very interesting stuff and I’m sure it’ll all come out in the wash and the fullness of time.

    Hi Jan,

E3 is a “no heat” error which can be caused by no less than seven different failures that are listed, many of which you may well not even think to look for, like the spray arms blocked. MFI Extracare, without looking at the appliance, can only do what we’d do and guess at the fault. In effect all that “E3” is telling you is that the machine is not reaching temperature, not why it’s not reaching temperature.

Due to legislation I can’t be to precise here, but the most likely cause is that the resettable thermostat has tripped (usually a bit of cutlery across the heater and stat will do that ;)) and if you access the thermostat and press the little red button in the centre it may cure the fault.

If that doesn’t clear it my advice is to get in an engineer in all honesty and there’s a lot of the guys on here are specialist repairers for MFI/Hygena/Diplomat appliances if that helps any.

Ehm, just a little point. I hope this is an old copy of whatever it is as copying copyrighted material is an offence, regardless of how unjustified the charges made for it are?

The last thing I want is any of you guys being taken to task over a silly £35 disc by Whirlpool, who I’m guessing don’t much like UKW as is. 😉

TBH Cornwell, for all you’d need it Dave, Kev or someone here would be able to answer any sticky ones you get.

Yes it may well turn into a very interesting thread indeed if the information I’m hearing is true.

With the franchise comes err…the cost of a van, the insurances etc. but you do get training. But no paid holidays, no pension rights, no illness or redundancy or any of the security of being a paid employee.

But here’s the crunch… NO guarantee of ANY work or workloads now, let alone work a few months down the road! No guarantee of any income at all, but you have all the costs, very nice, where do I sign? 😆

Seriously though, I ran this past two engineers tonight who, after they’d finished guffawing at the very notion, simply stated words to the effect of, “any muppet that signs up to a deal like that deserves all they get, or rather don’t”.

    Says it all really.

I’m awaiting the full details but this is what I’m hearing thus far from sources I have, unless Merloni would care to comment and set the record straight?

You reckon Kev? Most of those old thing’s systems were built like battleships and, IME, if they started to go they wouldn’t cool but I have seen what you’re talking about as well. I would have actually assumed that insulation failure in or around the evap plate was more likely allowing warm air to seep in around the capiliary holding the stat open. One of those “without seeing it things” I guess.

Mind you, 90oF (I couldn’t be bothered to convert it) could mean as hot as the sun as far as I’m aware, you’d understand that malarky better than I. 😉

Talk in oC so us young ‘uns can understand please. 😉

It sounds like a stat problem TBH Martin or possibly insulation breakdown given the age of it.

Well maybe the guys aren’t getting paid properly (IMO) as Whirlpool seem to be spending shed loads of cash on new directors, new systems and then $500 million on a shares buy-back! Seems they can spend money on just about anything except decent service. 🙁

Yeah, just wait till you get one of these that has been left for a week or two or some kind sod has puked in! It has happened to me in the past and it’s not at all a pleasant experience I can assure you.

Some company, I forget who now, asked us about 2 years ago to do warranty service on these and I kinda shyed away from it as it just wasn’t worth it for the money on offer. They are simple enough things, in essence a motor and blades really it’s only the control method that varies IME.

We used to do the Sissons commercial ones which there was good money in to a degree but loads of hassles as well as a horrible dirty job and you are always required to attend sameday as they were always in schools etc.. We gave that up due to no real volume, poor rates for the time spent on them and after they went out of warranty, in general, we got few calls and what we did get was always an invoice and pray for payment job.

On the domestics, £100 or less for a new one that the customer can quite easily fit themselves in a lot of cases. B&Q were flogging a unit for about £75 IIRC.

The best bit is that usually you’re out just to clear a blockage but I’ve avoided waste units thus far on a domestic level.

    Re: Electrue/NESN

You are correct Del in that this should have been addressed a long time ago and most of what has happened this past year or so, simply, shouldn’t have. It has been a great shame to see an organisation that was as well respected as NESN dragged through the mud because of a few individuals, but such is life, we’ll move on and hopefully some of the damage will be repaired in time.

The struggle back for NESN has really only just begun and, if there’s some good news I’ll be sure to pass it on but thus far, although I have heard murmerings of the silly contract clauses being dropped, I’ve yet to see any hard evidence of it. However Ms Madden has intimated that she will call a proper members meeting in July and I’m sure this will be a subject for conversation at that meeting.

The problem is that’s not the only bit of damage caused, even I’m still out of pocket as are others AFAIK, we’ll see how that’s addressed as well.

    Re: Happy Birthday UKW!

LOL, I remember that email Dave!

I’m actually a bit humbled by all this TBH. I started the site, yeah and came up with the idea as well as promoted it a fair old bit and I still do that along with what I do here. It’s a hell of a lot of work at times, more so with what you don’t see behind the scenes and both Dave and Kevin along with a few others have played principal roles in all that and taking some of the burden at times, so there are some unsung heroes here. There has also been a great deal of information passed to us by many members of the trade that have kept the info flowing, some of it being passed has been incredibly sensitive and I hope that we have honoured everyone’s right to privacy on that front, but again, without that information it would not be such an interesting medium or as fast at keeping everyone informed. All these people and all the people that have contributed their posts and thoughts in the past year are what have made UK Whitegoods what it is, no one person can lay claim to it, or even a group of people other than the entire community that has sprung up from UKW as we all play a part in it.

We all contribute, we all try to help one another and we have, above all, always remained very pleasant and courteous to others at all times, even if we didn’t always agree on a topic. That I think is exemplary behaviour in anyone’s book and only serves to show that we are just a nice bunch of people out to make an honest living. I also think that we have shown to the public and many clients that we deal with, in whatever context, that we are indeed not fools and that we are an honourable bunch. Yes, we all like a laugh and there is a fair bit of humour on UKW at times, but it lightens the day and we all have a laugh at some of it so there’s no problem there.

But as I have said often, this site is yours really, the trade. Without you guys it would not have flourished the way that it has or taken on the role that it has in the industry. So whilst I am honoured at the importance you place on the admin team why don’t you share some of the credit amongst yourselves as together, working as a team as we have done, the knowledge we have is just astounding.

I can only echo what Dave has already said in the way that the site has gone and that I am honoured to be associated with the site the people here and the many friends I’ve made along the way. I look forward to the future of UKW with such a band of decent people onboard and just wonder were we’ll be in another year or two, but I’ll raise my glass to a bright future just as Alex has done.
