Did I read that correctly – the evaporator in some cases is embedded in insulation and not serviceable?

    Correct.

Customers want smooth, easy-to-clean interiors, more space and lower prices. This is part of how that is achieved and there are scores of examples of this sort of thing across pretty much every single product category, much of it centred around cost reduction.

Low prices come at a cost. You just might not be aware of them at the point of purchase. With much of these practices the cost is financial to consumers, sure but also a huge environmental cost through the waste that frankly, hardly anyone seems to care much about. Consumers are seemingly more interested in the latest fancy “thing” at the lowest possible price caring little beyond that about any of this, where they come from, how long they will last etc, etc.

Case in point, you will likely have to scrap a four-year-old machine and buy another. Two hits on resources and costs in four years, when those machines should really be serviceable and last over a decade.

Yup. And it looks to be a foamed in one that is not available so the unit is scrap if that’s failed I’m sorry to say.

On a great many now the sensor/s will be embedded in the insulation next to the fridge evaporator that is also embedded in the insulation behind the rear wall of the cabinet. Many are irreplaceable and not available as a spare part as they were never intended to be replaced.

Gives you a nice “clean, smooth easy to clean” interior and more interior space for the specs top trumps which buyers want. Makes it nigh on impossible to repair for many people on a DIY basis and, if you can get the sensors you need, a proper PITA even when you know what you’re doing and where to dig to replace them.

But it MUST have a sensor in there, it could not operate without it and it’ll be an NTC or PTC resistive sensor of some sort buried in the cabinet insulation no doubt that you can’t see or get to, you’ll just see some wiring “disappear” into the unit somewhere.

So no, there’s not just the board and they do not require any sort of programming etc so given what you’ve said, it’s almost a stone cold certainty that the thermistor is failed, not giving the correct values to the board and that’s the cause of your issues.

Ordinarily, yes, you’d expect that, but it depends on the unit IME just how it presents and how it’s reported.

But it’s kinda like the phial or sensor being sited incorrectly, the unit just runs and runs, not enough to get a mass of ice but, enough so it drops a few degrees below where it should be and gives the impression of freezing like a freezer to the user but, it’s actually just getting down to or just below freezing point. Enough to freeze especially in lower areas such as the bottle shelf where people see milk etc “frozen” and you get the report of it “freezing everything” when in fact it’s actually doing the opposite in a way.

Unfortunately, I’m not familiar with the specific layout of the cabinet, which can significantly impact the issue. Therefore, I cannot provide a definitive answer in this case.

I’ve seen that on some Dave, rare but possible.

what happens is the system is trying to chill but if the sensor or stat phial is away from where it’s cold enough to cut out the unit continuously runs. The top of the evaporator chills like mad and it can freeze up but not as cold as a freezer would be but there’s not enough refrigerant or oomph in the pot to get an even temperature across the evaporator. So you get the symptoms described pretty much.

like I say, rare, but entirely possible and not unknown. And for sure not going to be a DIY repair.

Yes, that can happen and it would indicate a compressor problem.

In simple terms, the board does no timing or anything other than perhaps a defrost cycle where appropriate, it just switches the compressor on, off etc. How and when it does that is determined by the sensors that will vary by model what ones are used and where.

So if the compressor runs continuously about the only explanation there is would be a faulty sensor normally, more so as you have eliminated the possibility of the board by replacing it.

That is indicative of a sensor (thermistor) failure if it over freezes.

Not to my knowledge as they are safety devices in effect so designed to fail off.

I don’t know the machine, but if I were to guess, given what you say, I’d be thinking the door lock had failed.

That is a very “niche” appliance, do you have a model number and I’ll try a search but, I’d not hold out much hope of getting any info on it?

Spares prices have been volatile for ages, you can check a price and go back 24 hours later to see it increased in some cases. It is often random, no universal increases as such on most I’ve seen and there are things you either ain’t gonna get or get quickly. We’ve seen delays on many things of late and sadly, whilst we get the blame in the eyes of some, there’s not a damn thing we can do about it.

End users don’t care or consider that issues in Ukraine and the Middle East are affecting it. Or indeed China should they decide to invade Taiwan or whatever.

All they care about is, can I get what I need, how fast and how much.
