Re: Samsung RL33SBSW buzzing – how to open evaporator cover?

Original pc fan still working lads. 💡 After just about 2 years.

Samsung could ony warrant their replacement evap. cover for 3 months. Good for them; it broke down after 8.

So, yeah, I suppose I am a lunatic.

Bring on the poll. 😆 Nice one bazza – at least you comment is humorous.

    Bryan,

I find your comment offensive. I’m no lunatic. I have every respect for qualified engineers and would not lower myself to denigrate you or your fellow contributors to this public, open forum.

And that is the point, Bryan.

This is a public, open forum. If you chose to understand what I was trying to suggest to tomr it was……..open the evap. cover at the risk of invalidating warranties.

As to electrocuting people……with a 12 volt supply ? Speak to the state correctional facilities in many of the U.S. states Bryan, they could save a fortune on electricity costs. 😆

    tomr

when you say your fridge is out of warranty do you mean it’s more than 2 years old or more than 5 years old.

Mine carried a 2 yea warranty. However, Samsung have extended this to 5 years re. evaporator cover and a couple of other items, resulting from a Watchdog program identifying a fault in the design of the evap. cover.

If you remove this cover you might invalidate your warranty and Samsun would not then honour their committment to replace such units f.o.c.

Just thought I’d warn you in case this is relevant.

Re: Samsung RS21DGRS Ice Build Up problem

    Kwatt,

In every case where an unauthorised fix has been applied I would agree, the warranty has been invalidated.

My case is however more complicated than that.

First, the part I modified was, as stated by Samsung “out of warranty”. It was 8 months old and they only offer a 3 month warranty on replaced parts.

Second, the entire fridge was out of warranty at the time their replacement evap. cover failed.

Third, I did agree with Samsung to purchase the part but I honestly couldn’t get a local company to supply and fit. Samsung technical department did, reluctantly, supply me the part number. I did contact their authorised supplier and they did quote me a price of £95.83 – but would only supply the part not fit it. Samsung would then only suggest I look in the yellow pages and each company listed refused to get involved. I still have the names and phone numbers of those companies.

Now moving on, I fixed the main issue and was happy for the next 23 months. Watchdog’s involvement caused Samsung to “extend” the warranty. In so doing they now claim my fix invalidates that warranty. This is akin to increasing the minimum sentence for, say, rape to 20 years and then retrospectively applying this to all jailed rapists who have previously been sentenced with lesser time. It just wouldn’t happen.

I believe also that part of the corrective replacement involved a thermal fuse. I’ve not amended this part at all so I asked Samsung to attend and replace that element. They refused.

In summary, I had a failed unit, I sought Samsung’s assistance and agreed to pay, they were unable to help, I fixed the problem, they acknowledge a design failure and then refuse to honour their committment citing warranty violation.

    It stinks.

    Lunarc,

your post reminded me to update a thread I posted in back in late 2006. Please see Samsung RS21DGRS thread for more info.

I’d ring Samsung on 0800 988 0123 and register your request for the extended warranty (5 years from date of purchase) and then the replacement evaporator assembly, thermistor fuse etc.

    Good luck,
    Mike

Re: Samsung RS21DGRS Ice Build Up problem

It’s been a while since I last posted on here. To be fair, my last but one post stated that I’d not post again……..but having previously broken that promise 😆 I’m about to repeat the break.

I recently found out about the watchdog program and telephoned Samsung to register my request for the repair. I’m at about 4.5 years from d.o.p. I’m honest so explained how I had, back in Dec 2006, modified the fan assembly by installing a 12v computer fan as the Samsung (replaced) unit had failed 8 months after it’s installation under the warranty. So, I’m on my second evaporator unit and it’s failed back in Dec 2006.

I did agree at that time to purchase the assembly (£95.83) but couldn’t find a company to supply and fit. Samsung’s final suggestion was to look in the yellow pages. I tried. Still no luck. I still have the names and ‘phone numbers of the companies I contacted.

As I explained on this site back in late 2006 my solution wa sthe d.c. fan. It still works by the way – the same original fan.

However, Samsung have said that as I’ve modified the unit I have broken my warranty agreement. I find the logic of that somewhat strange as the warranty had expired after 3 months on the replaced unit and after 2 years on the fridge generally.

I suppose, back in Dec 2006 I should have switched the unit off, stored it in the garage awaiting a possible Watchdog investigation whereupon I could have then called Samsung out to replace having NOT broken my warranty terms. :rolls:

It would be worth noting therefore, anyone who reads this post, that removal of the evaporator cover even for the purpose of using the hairdryer to defrost the block of ice would likely constitute a “breach of the warranty” and hence invalidate the free retro-fix Samsung have been manipulated into offering as a result of the Watchdog program.

Am I bitter? NO. My fridge has operated since my fix with only the occasional need to defrost the ice.

Would I buy Samsung again? Not a hope. Mainly based upon their after-sales service failings rather than the quality of the product.

I bought 8 lottery tickets on the 8th August 2008 – matched only three numbers out of all 48 each on a different line of course.

My luck is crap so like as not the Proline will break down. :rolls:

I will keep you informed on the success or otherwise of the Proline dishwasher. And thanks for a very articulate and most helpful response.

I know exactly what you mean about slow provision of spares from China. Had a problem 3-4 years back with a 3 piece reclining leather sofa. Needed a replacement leather cover on one of the reclining footrests due to damage and waited 15+ weeks with one excuse after another. Finally, I got a price from DHL for air transport of the piece of leather and put this to the company – they paid it and problem was fixed a week later.

Re: Indesit D63 keeps tripping out house fuse box

I’ve just read through the thread and felt a further post was warranted:

It is MY belief that manufacturers of ALL domestic appliances tend to build-in a “decrepit factor” these days.

Nothing lasts for too long, our whole society is based upon replace rather than repair.

For that reason, and the fact that I cannot control the build quality of ANYTHING I’m inclined to accept that machines will break down, will need repair and such is likely to be more expensive given a Brit will be employed to repair compared to an overseas employee buiding the unit in the first place.

Therefore, brand name is no guarantee of longevity/quality – only a good insurance/repair policy.

Re: Indesit D63 keeps tripping out house fuse box

    25 year old dishwashers !!!

I first encountered a dishwasher at a villa in Spain perhaps 28 years back and vowed never to wash/dry pots again. So a 25 year old specimen is a real treat.

My experience of white goods performance is more like 2-7 years.

There’s a bunch of guys on here offering good solid advice, but sometimes laced with invective, unhelpful to the general public.

You might recall I was somewhat “told-off” for suggesting a fix to a Samsung fridge-freezer air-circulation fan problem could entail a 12v dc ex-computer fan.

I can say, that fix still holds, the fridge-freezer is still working, same fan, no electric shocks (sorry chaps !).

Sometimes, you just need a lateral view of a problem.

Seriously, if a crap fridge-freezer unit fails the answer is not always best sought in spending a shed-full of money. The answer lies in protecting yourself against a repeat of a similar problem and that can ONLY be achieved by insurance/warranty agreements.

    You guys amaze me.

This site is supposed to offer advice not personal abuse. If you look back at my first post on this thread I was simply posting my similar experience but qualified my post by clearly stating I am not an expert.

My further suggestion as to buying an inexpensive replacement and taking out a warranty cover is again simply MY route – and a valid one.

hotpnt seems to want to have a pop at me – I’m unsure why. How can he be assured a cheapie really will break down several times a year. In the past I’ve had Bosch, Ariston, Indesit, LG and of course Whirlpool. Had a Samsung American style fridge/freezer as well (still have). All eventually cause problems of one sort or another – some sooner rather than later. In my opinion a Brand Name is no guarantee of absolute build quality. Many different overseas factories building the different models in a Brand’s portfolio, built on a Monday Morning – poor quality of sub components in a batch – any number of issues.

You can quarantee however that if you have a warranty cover you WILL get a repair/replacement during the period of cover.

So lighten-up guys. Remember, you repairers are likely to make more money if cheapies are purchased without cover 8)

Why replace one pile of junk with another.

The average white goods buyer is not an expert. The statement above is valid if you ARE an expert buyer.

    How about the following advice…….. from a non-expert :

Buy a product with a credit card (you get section 75 credit act safeguards) and take out some warranty deal – 3 year OK 5 year probably better.

If the unit fails in the 3-5 years it’s somebody else’s problem to fix.

The trick is to pay a reasonable amount for the 3-5 year cover.

Re: Indesit D63 keeps tripping out house fuse box

    Steve,
Had similar problem with a Whirlpool dishwasher recently. Called an engineer out who diagnosed water was lodging in the base of the unit, had risen high enough to short the electrics in the machine hence trips main power fuse box.

When switched-on, only the drain pump was running and this further confirmed his diagnosis. The level had fallen sufficiently in the 4-5 days between initial fault and engineers arrival to fall lower than the electric short-out point.

Engineer never did get back to me with a repair cost so I replaced with a cheap integrated unit from Comet (Proline) and paid £70 for the 5 year total cover warranty.

I am NOT technically knowledgeable – just a domestic user with similar experience to you.

    Mike
