ParticipantRe: A sign of the times?
Thanks for the link Dave, I’m glad to see that their site is up and running now and more accessible than it was last year. Unfortunately after looking round the site and seeing how many members there were I am astounded that this organisation can claim to represent anyone let alone the domestic appliance sector.
With so few members and the obvious lack of interest I can only wonder how they can keep afloat, I can only surmise that they have some backing from the industry itself, the page on joining DASA does not show the subscription rate just pound signs which leads me to believe that they are making it up as they go along.
I have stated on these forums that I believe we as a trade need a professional organisation such as DASA to look after our interests and this is something I still believe yet I cannot in all honesty say I am impressed by what I have seen and read.
UKW has stated that it is not in the business of being this type of organisation and I respect that stance; but looking at what it has done form many of the independents that have joined this site with such as repairs @, Training and now Project X it is offering more for nothing than DASA has offered at anytime.
Being pals with people in the manufacturing and work providers is not IMO representing anyone but yourselves and as for NVQ’s they do not provide specific training on products which is what the repairer needs and most independents have not got the time to undertake them.
So I say to DASA it is time to get real and take the blindfolds off, if you really want to represent this trade get out there and do it don’t sit on you backside debating policy and how much you can screw out of the members this year get on your bikes and make people WANT to join you.
Good luck

Strange you bringing this up Kevin, I thought the end was in sight for DASA as no one seemed to want to talk about them after the last meeting and the DASA forum disappeared from our pages. I have asked a few times of various people what was happening with them but no one seemed eager to discus anything about them

ParticipantRe: Help Yourself First
I can see why you are frustrated Ken but you have to understand that in this trade we have been pissed on from great heights by manufacturers and work providers alike. You are asking for a leap of faith from people who don’t know you, oh they like the site and the camaraderie of being in touch with other repairers throughout the country and some just want the combined technical knowledge that can be found on the site.
When you instigated the repairs@ it was a boon for anyone who wanted to join and involved no cost, but this project X thing you are asking people to signup to something that they know nothing about and no disrespect Ken but why should they trust you? All you have said about the project really adds up to nothing as far as the type of machine you are planning to produce so let me ask the questions and see how much you are willing to give out:
1. Is this a completely new machine or is it based on a standard model with alterations to your specs.
2. Is UKW fronting for a manufacturer or some other organisation or is this strictly a UKW project
3. Your job payments are very reasonable as one would expect from something involving UKW but what are your terms for BER’s.
4. Who will be administering the accounts?
5. Are you in partnership with anyone on this venture?
6. what are the predicted order to delivery times
7. What about spares prices? And where will they be ordered from
8. How easy will it be to return duff units? As you know Ken I am no longer active in the trade but these are some of the questions I would want answering before I would even consider having anything to do with them.
This is nothing personal Ken I’m just once again playing the Devils advocate to bring out some of the things I think may be stopping people joining the project.

ParticipantThis topic is quite interesting in as far as the comments go and I find the fact of using RMS to specify the voltage delivered quite laughable. Put on a scope you will see that the peak to peak voltage comes out at around 260 to 300 volts now this is not particularly important in modern electronics where regulators are used in all areas but it does show up in the lifetime of a domestic bulb, heating elements and other such items.
The comment about the differing voltage of the two light bulbs and the heat they produced is just plain Ohm’s law that we all should be aware of in this trade, but I have wondered for years if the domestic appliance manufacturers have put enough safety margin when designing the appliances and could this be a factor in the early demise of such things as timers and control boards.
If you look at a lot of the small appliances these days you will find many are rated at 220/230V which if we consider the peak to peak voltage, is nowhere near suitable for our supply in this country

ParticipantThanks both of you, I’ll await developments

ParticipantPerhaps someone should contact trading standards and find out the legal standing on this issue rather than just what we have been led to beleive.
I was under the impression that all electrical parts were covered by a twelve months warranty by law but I could be wrong and would not argue the case

ParticipantRe: How nasty am i?
I think you are terrible and have a very bad customer care attitude, so what if the poor chap didn’t buy the spares from you!
I would have been straight round with my tools and big hammer and other things I thought he might need and stood behind him encouraging him on, and point out his errors in a nice way to ensure that he ended up with a good working machine, then I could have gone home feeling good about myself and slept the sleep of angels knowing I had done my little bit to help someone in need.
Shame on you! It’s people like you that give the trade a bad name and I bet you will not be hearing from this chap again and I can only say it serves you right.
