Participantmatrixresonator wrote:Diagram shows it next to the motor. Can you share a photo of the motor area?
I CANT upload a pic myself , says pic to big , but this is how the motor looks on mine and yes usually they are mounted infront of the motor, but Nowt there, , am i right in thinking without a capacitor the dryer just wouldnt start? if i am then it must have one, but where?
Shroppyfly
ParticipantYes thanks Kai+Dave, i have a HOTPOINT FTCF87 i acquired it knowing the capacitor was iffy , the only one i had to hand was an 18 uF, I actually think it came off a Beko washing machine, ill order an 8uF tomorrow, i just wondered whether putting a much bigger one, whether it is dangerous, knowing that they provide that extra kick for the motor, and would a washing machine one be any different to a dryer capacitor (in the main )?
Follow up Q , when they humm, and wont start the motor , IS it doing any damage to the motor itself humming away but not doing anything?

ParticipantSo as a finish off, when i wrote the initial post id turned the dryer upside down -to have a proper look, then the posts and confirmation, . So i stood there and swore at it a few hundred times, popped it back on its feet in prep for the stripdown, I thought id give it one last go , and Bingo, whatever was causing the high pitched whine has gone 😀 a few more loads to make sure and it hasnt returned, So success in a way…!

ParticipantThanks guys yeah, id sorta resigned myself that a drum out job was the only way , but, had to ask, yeah very silly design, im guessing the pumps usually are very reliable usually so the location of it didn’t matter,I’ve no issues stripping it, just a flippin pain with Arthritic fingers what do you mean fiddly to change the pump? does the motor have have to come as well to access it? i mean the pump does pump…!, but its very very loud lol, odd is, when its pumping you tip the driver backwards, or sideways , on two feet , the noise stops, but as soon as you pop it back on all 4 feet its there, i think tomorrow ill swear at it a fair bit then attack it on Monday

ParticipantCheers Dave and Kaibart,
The problem seems to have sorted itself out, didnt say its been fixed but its sorted, onto the next Noisey pump issue in a new thread:(Shroppyfly
ParticipantCheers Dave, yeah I read that too, but in that pause to reverse tumble hell fire its loud, might change the pump again, , hoping..!! but cant say im, confident, the two wires that go on the pump im guessing it makes no difference which they are in–to the pump operation i mean

Dave,So checked weights at front and underneath, , all needed no more than a quarter nip up at most, mind you the filter had more coppers in it than you will ever see on the streets
so ill reassemble tomorrow and re try it , unless while its apart(again making good use of the kitchen table), the mrs is overjoyed, shes speechless. theres anything else i could easily check look at?Shroppyfly
ParticipantDave , cheers for that, up early watching the f1, bound to be another red flag, ill get the sockets out in between lol

ParticipantSo, before i did what i did today , i had a error code, but not much else , so i did what Dave suggested reassembled plugged and POP it tripped the trip switch, popped back up, now lcd display nothing and whichever setting its on , it seems to be filling and draining at the same time, not a happy bunny, anyhow removed the pcb and there does seem to be an area which looks cindered/burnt , but i could be imagining it , can you post pics on here?, i have to ad when i first reassembled with no water connected, it just hummed but zero lcd display, after some cussing , and connected to water it popped and is on permanent fill and drain your move Dave lol

ParticipantDave I will attempt to do without removing a painfully large {e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of knuckle skin and report back

ParticipantDave One presumes with an exceptionally steady hand and professional soldering equip, would it then req coding? To my machine and I’m presuming it’s a small electrical bit of kit, so where could I source it?
