I have never worked for RC although it was considered a number of years back. For me contract work is useful to a point in so much that if you have a healthy customer base of trading work then a bit of extra contract work is icing on the cake. For any business where contract work has become a large percentage of all work you are at the mercy of the provider and personally its not a situation I would entertain, control of your own workflow and business is essential in my view and when I read stories like this it reminds me why I don’t need the likes of RC. It like Connects affiliate sales, they use it as a tool to increase you sales, however once that customer clicks that link they become a connect customer and connect have all their contact details which in my book is like giving your customers away !!!

I wish you luck with this 🙂

    Re: PAYPAL WARNING

Actually Martin the sub sections that you have put forward apply and are for Business, this was a private domestic customer and none of what is in that document applies to individuals. The facts are that Paypal advertise loudly about 3D security and how their online system is secure.

The fact is it is far from safe, clever fraudsters gain access to account holders details and have done so not from the account holders but by other means. There was another case recently I read where a number of Paypal employees were involved in a scam where they were defrauding customers accounts and Paypal would not even issue a comment.

Paypal is not secure and anyone who is using it needs to check their accounts daily. This persons Bank would not investigate the fraud as they say Paypal have their own security unit. Anyone who has dealt with Paypal via phone will know that it far from easy due to the fact that many if not all of their employees and offices are not UK based and in can be a real PITA to even understand them, its also of interest to note that the Paypal staff involved in the multiple inside scam were also of foreign origins.
What I wonder is the common link in all of this ?? Mmm

    Be Careful folks

    Re: parking in the city

Try Parking in London or Brighton, theres little diference ! It adds to the time involved in servicing the call, lugging a tool box a fair distance, returning to the vehicle to collect spare parts, lugging the toolbox back possibly up a coulple of flights if stairs ! It also can cuase stress to the engineer and adds to their working day.

So why an earth shoud’nt this be added to the bill ! Just try and get a solicitor or Vet to call out to you !

Re: Board damage due to power cut/surge.

Had an exact same problem with a Bosch a while back, power surge and then a power cut after which the appliance was rendered useless. I went to look at this machine and diagnosed that the module was now faulty.

Customer then done battle with Bosch and the local Supply company over this.
Electricty company told her that ALL machines had circuitry to prevent such an instance and this therefore should not have occurred. Bosch willing to send engineer out to look with customer paying !

Result was I repaired it as requested, I could not se on the face of it who would be responsible and it did’nt help her case that the electricity supplier said there was no one else affected by the incident !

    Hi Ken,

Would it be possible to supply the ESP files for the ISE logo, also what about the WTA logo ? Can you check with Amica if there logo can be used, basically I want to use these in a forthcoming website and as we already are established with the ISE brand and are registered with Amica for the forthcoming service work as well as retailing Amica this seems to be a logical progression.

    Re: camcorder

So far as I know all HD formats use some sort of compression which leads to loss of detail. It’s a thing with almost all digital formats.

All consumer HD formats will use some form of compression some being worse than others. There is a huge difference between Professional HD equipment used for TV and the Film industry and trying to compare between Consumer and Professional is a lost leader. Professional Cameras will have great optics coupled with Pro features, the resulting footage from such cameras will be edited with probably a Mac running Final Cut Pro, many major studios edited with this arrangement along with huge hardrives which are quick with large buffers all optimised for such work exclusively.

If you look at your average ACVHD you will observe that whist the near subject is in focus and sharp if you then pan the camera the subject is sharp but the backround starts to block and looks pixelated. You will not get such artifacts on a Pro Camera. Many consumer HD products are not really HD at all when you examine the specs and look at the results.

I have spent many hours with video from early VHS, Betamax, Betacam, Hi 8, Mini DV and HD, for your average home user the later formats are great especially when you get to the cutting room but they have limitations depending on what you really want and how much your willing to pay.

    Re: Iphone- Any good??

Well I have had the i phone 3GS for almost a year now and its one of the best phones I have had. Apart from having to charge it at the end of every day and the fact that unless you jailbreak it it will not run flash it does everything I could want a phone to do and it also saves me many a time booting up the laptop to source spares and manuals !

On the other hand my son got a i phone 4 the day it was released ! could’nt wait. After four weeks he has returned it due to a couple if issues and now has the HTC Desire android which is also a great phone.

    Re: sios disk

Yeap Mike Rayner, he is very helpful, as regards SIOS it fails to provide any useful technical information which is a shortcoming just like Partfinder. The partfinder version that the HP engineers have is great nothing like the poor offering that Indesit wanna charge far too much money for. In my opinion the TDS disk was the benchmark of how a resources disk should be, its just a shame that they decided to stop it !

    Re: camcorder

I have a Panasonic SD10 (full HD) camcorder that stores onto a SDHC card in AVCHD format.

Actually AVCHD is a compressed format which is not full HD, Applications such as Final Cut Pro and Final Cut Express soon reveal the shortcomings of this format. Whilst hooking the camera to a HD TV looks great ,once you start to edit AVCHD you can clearly observe the blocking that is the compression of AVCHD which attempts to interpolate the missing information !

AVCHD is a consumer format and cannot be considered a Professional Hi Def platform. Personally I would stay away from AVCHD and go for a true HD camera if your serious. Also editing should not be a real problem for a decent spec PC or better still Mac. I run two computer systems one a laptop Mac Pro the Other a PC but running Windows and Snow Leopard and they have no bother running 25 fps and chucking large chunks of footage and music and titles around. Its also important to choose hardware and software that renders in real time or else you can go camping for a week while the rendering takes place !

    Re: amazon

My view of this is that there are a very small percentage of people who can perform simple tasks. Many of these folks are older say 40 plus, the younger ones are not blessed with the dexterity to handle and use tools and its amazing how many people seem to have no common sense or logical approach. As engineers we are logical and Lateral thinkers ( well I am on a good day ) 🙂

Many buy parts that are not required and a lot of folks just have not got the time or can be bothered to try a fix their appliances. I do not think our trade is doomed but we have to find different ways of selling our services to the public and go with the flow.

    Re: offline cd with manuals

what a great and sought after resource such a DVD would be ? it would answer all our prayers. In reality no such thing exists although I have managed to obtain a fair bit of info over time. Some of the manufacturers will allow online access to there spares identification systems like Hoover but only if you spend upwards of a thousand per month. Most of us probably would not have such a spend so the whole thing becomes prohibitive, but like has been said if you wish to know something generally between everyone here there is normally a solution to be found. 😀

Yeap ! Mac Book Pro for me as well ! Extremely well constructed, Cast Iron operating system, No Bloatware, Security and Virus issues all a thing of the past, Much Quicker at everything and they just love demanding tasks which windows would struggle with on most machines, you can even run Windows on it with the likes of Bootcamp, VM Ware and as many instances of it or windows versions as you wish, and Windows runs better on the Mac Platform !

I have an Imac as well and for sure you wont be visiting the MS site for continual updates which MS make a living out of. OSX has no registery for nasty trojans and virus backdoors to hide up in and you wont be needing any virus software either.

To my mind a pure winner !

    Re: Sorry but I can’t do it……..

For sometime now I have had a section in our t&cs specifically for intergrated machines in order to avoid the story Martin has outlined, poor man, seriously we have all had machines like this from bits of old ceramic tiles jacking up machines, cables and hoses routed round the cape horn etc etc. Be upfront with the customers when you first look at the installation and if necessary walk away if agreement cannot be made
