ParticipantRe: £20 To Answer The Mobile!
This is just one more example of how this country is going downhill, not satisfied with taxing us at source, indirect taxation, fines, VAT, customs taxes and using sophisticated systems to track our every move its no wonder that the country is in such a state !
When will the population say enough is enough, we elect goverments and councils to represent us not rule us, The french have far more balls than we do and act when their goverment or the EU try to make life worse for them. The British on the other hand have a pathetic attitude when it comes to standing up for themselves. Don’t misunderstand me I am as english as the next man but we are on a slipery slope make no mistake and by letting this particular council enforce such stupid and unacceptable practices we are encouraging these beuracratic idiots even further.

I wonder how many Service Engineers BG have nationwide ? Anyone Have any real idea of the numbers ?
For those if us that run our own business with retail frontends and a staff of engineers we have already learnt the finer mechanics of accounting, Profit & Loss and Stock controls and in additition the day to day running and fine tuning that goes into running a sucessful business. I used to work for a manufacturer service and we had 280 engineers across the country supported by a 1 million Pound service centre with a army of people who were supposed to accept calls from their customers and then allocate them geographically to the service force.
This worked for about two years and due to company service pledges i.e 48 hour service visits later reduced to 24 Hour visits and the incompetence of Service Centre Staff and Overworked engineers who were travelling miles and making stupid mistakes the system went into meltdown the outcome of it being to get rid of the overheads directly. i.e the engineers and franchise the work out.
Problem 1. Many of the Franchised companies were not versed in the ways of the company and its products.
Problem 2. Spares availablity became an issue.
Problem 3. Due to dropped calls, non availibilty of Spares, Lack of Technical Knowledge work was being recycled for which the franchises did not get paid for.
Problem 4. Volitile and Angry Customers !The bottom line is if it takes around 30’000 to keep a engineer in the field doing the sums at a rough guess of say 300 engineers gives a direct overhead of of the best part of 9 Million Pounds Per annum.
BG may well be able to ride this for a time but eventually their market will flatten out due to customers failing to be retained, natural wastage. Which equates to LOSS OF INCOME, As we know there have been a few examples of companies like BG going down the pan for similar reasons and I would say that for the engineers currently working for BG and those thinking about jumping onboard remeber the old saying of Make Hay While The Sun Shines ! It will not last long !
There will always be work for us guys we are after all skilled and we should not be shy about blowing our own trumpets. Both these companies as well as the wider public need us.
Go forth and Multiply I Say

Squadman,
p.s How much detail about our role as domestic appliance engineers does the publication by IEE servicing and testing go into to, i.e is it worth getting a copy ?

ParticipantRe: Foreign Objects/Zanussi Drum
I reckon we have all had dealings with this problem and depending on what it is and where it is the job can be a pain in the butt. My own solutions work 90{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of the time with the odd percentage seeing a strip down. I try to get the object either to the top or bottom of the inner drum. A lot of the time once its at the top of the drum ( 12 O’clock ) you can use a implement between the inner drum and the tub as there is some latitude to be found which often sees the object dropping into the iner drum where you can retrieve it. If you get the obeject to the bottom I have a tiny long nose plier set that gets hold of the object to pull it out.
I would rather try these approaches as first measures as opposed to a strip down.

Martin, thanks for your help on this one I dismantled the magnet assembly as you suggested and cleaned the chamber in which it operates. This cured the fault I had not noticed the magnet/reed arrangment which is a variation on a theme is it not.
Cheers !

ParticipantRe: British Gas Homecare
Came home from work yesterday and soon had on of the neighbours bang’in on my door. It went something like this. They have one of these marvellous contracts with British Gas and three weeks ago the dishwasher went down. No problem lets call BG out, 5 Days ! later the BG engineer shows up, Yep its the Recirc Pump thats the problem I have not got one but we will place a order and should be back in a couple of days.
A week later still no sign of a BG engineer or the parts, sucessive calls the BG customer service brought out another engineer a week later ! This time he had the part, having fitted the new recirc pump it failed to cure the fault, the BG engineer then said that further parts were required which again he did not have with him. This time a motor capacitor was placed on order. Again BG have kept the customer waiting and they came to ask me about the parts availibilty, I told them straight that as far as the receirc pump was concerned I had one in stock, the motor capacitor was drawn from my van stock and I fitted it there and then! and the appliance was functioning !This customer is sick and tired of BG who do not care at all about customer service, Our strongest weapon is without any doubt running a tight and adaptable service and that is how I run my business and I can beat the likes of BG everytime. In this day and age people will not wait like this for things to get fixed. People can speak with us directly in a friendly manner and discuss there needs and we can adapt our service at a moments notice BG cannot ! and nor can any of the other boys.
Lets not fix our minds on so many negatives, at our company we don’t have problems only solutions ! leave the problems for BG when people realise that service is not what BG are actually about.
Each to their own but having worked in a enviroment that FB has described I for one would not contemplate going back into a working practice which involves idiots trying to plan and optomise a days work for a engineer, I have seen it all before and Yes the long holidays were great except for when you got home and found that other engineers had been covering your area, Yep loads of Tubs, Bearings, Timers and a million other parts that were not needed ! No Thanks

When I trained with a Major Manufacturer the insulation testing measurements laid down were Contunity above 1M ohm and Earth Insulation below 1 M ohm . I also know engineers who ride the tools with Manufacturers Service who are currently instructed to perform these measurments at Contunity still at above 1 M ohm and Earth Insulation now being accepted as below 2 M ohm.
Where do the previously mentioned figures of . 2 M ohm or . 3 M ohm fit into this criteria. My concern when testing is to ensure my own safety and that of my clients. Few if any of us are likely to be qualified as electricians and do not profess to be ! likewise the electrician would not be able to perform our role. Therefore my tests ensure that there is an good earth present and that the appliance passes my earth and contunity tests as given.
Any problems with the actual house or site wiring or installation is the responsibilty of the householder. I have been doing this job for the last 17 years during which time I have uncovered mains problems in clients houses some very serious. I once even came across a installation where the whole of the lower house ring was wired up completely wrong! When I advised the owner of this serious problem they advised me that it was nothing that could not be sorted out because they had a qualified Electrician working at the property who happened to be onsite at the time and was working in the lower part of the building topping and tailing one of the consumer units. When I found him and explained my findings he did not believe what I was saying ! However at my insistence he came with me and I showed him that there were indeed problems. He was getting ready to leave for the afternoon having completed his extensive work and I could not believe that he would have left the installation as it was. He actually worked for the regional EELB and was HNC trained !
It may well be that I saved him from something far more serious but I received no thanks from him other that him moaning that he could well be there half the night faultfinding the problem.
It just shows that any checks are better than none ! and my main reasons for placing this whole question in the first place was to try to gain an idea how many of us do these tests ? Seems like a fair few of us do and I would’nt mind betting that a fair few don’t.

ParticipantRe: BUSINESS RATES
Like Tony & Shane there are probably thousands of business ratepayers who are completely unaware that the Goverment has directed local authorites to cut rate bills to business ratepayers. There are exceptions to who can claim this rebate and your local authority will have the terms and conditions which apply. If you pay rates on other business properties you need to be careful as the last thing you would want is to be paying any funds back. We have been claiming a 50{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} rebate for over the last year now and this saving is one of few that the goverment has extended us.
Mind you you can see why the local councils have not made to much noise about this can’t you.squadman

Had one like this last week, interlock turned out to be culprit. Check blue wiring loom between facia panel and pcb as well.

ParticipantRe: New Breed of Twin Tubs
From what I have been told these are made in China, but then again whats not made in china thesedays.
The Qualtex machine does look all plastic with no Heater and the other one I saw was the same. I spoke to the importers of one of these and he was unable to answer any in depth questions about the operation of the machine. Eventually I got to speak to a service engineer at the place and he told me that the machines were easy to work on and that all the parts were available.
I have always got customers looking for a twin tub replacement but I do not want to get tied up with reliablity issues and unhappy customers. I am hoping to get a close look at the Qualtex T/T very soon. I will report back my findings.
