ParticipantI am embarrased to say that I run my fastrack merloni and other cds like tds, masterpart, freefind etc on a pc with the date set at 1989, so I dont tend to suffer from expiry dates although it involves regular changing of cds, since they aren’t installed on the harddrive and I tend to rely on hand me downs from a friendly rep that I know, however, my data is generally months out of date, so I would be interested in paying a subscription for blanket parts coverage of manufacturers data, diagrams etc, but presently I use electrues, connections software more than any other, since I order most of my parts from them, but if the likes of electrue do not find it financially viable to purchase a license to publicly display the likes of hotpoint/merloni info, then what chance would UKW have using a subscription basis.
For a one man band like me, I am astounded and impressed at the amount of time and effort that some of you guys put in here at UKW, since I struggle sometimes just to find the time to get through my calls, let alone order parts and do all the other bits and bobs involved in running a business.
for me, (when I can get online) its nice to read the posts from likeminded people who are in the same boat as me, so its all about the kinship.

ParticipantI have used macromedia and frontpage, and found frontpage the easier of the two, but microsoft publisher has ready made website templates that you can just fill in with your details and it really is a piece of cake.
take a look at publisher.

ParticipantI always wrap insulation tape around the plug so it cannot be plugged in.
I did a job not long ago where I had the front plate off a washing machine and the lady asked me would I like a cup of tea, she then plugged the washing machine in instead of the kettle and nearly killed me, there was no rcd and if the thing had not of gone off with a bang, then I would not have known what she had just done and could possibly have been killed.
So now I always ensure that I drop the plug behind the appliance when I am working on it and if that is not possible, then I take out the fuse.washtec

ParticipantI feel sure that any self employed engineer would be very coy about training up the competition, or is North Norfolk a massive patch.
this being said, Alan, I like your approach, will you be starting your own business or looking for a position with a company?
whichever it is, good luck m8

Participantcan the eeproms be reprogrammed, I have an elvis programmer that I use to program gold, funcards and titanium cards for my Tv interests, the elvis multiprogrammer will also do eeproms.
here it is http://www.the-internet-shop.co.uk/Prog … rogra.html
when Burns says that the eeproms cannot be programmed by design, is that because they are now fixed to the pcb or is it because they have been locked in some way?
It should be a case of reading a good eeprom, saving the image and writing the good image over the corrupted eeprom.washtec
ParticipantRe: What do you love about this job ?
I served my time as an industrial elecrician but ended up working in a ship yard as a leccy, it was a nightmare to go in the shipyard gates and be stuck in there all day, anyway after being offered a redundancy package, I answered a job advertisement for Hotpoint and started working as a service engineer and immediatly fell in love with the freedom and meeting all of the general public, it was almost like being a celebrity..”Oh my god he’s fixed my washing machine!!”..I had found my true vocation, but became very disillusioned after 8 years, when Creda became part of Hotpoint and I was covering from wirral in Merseyside to Crewe in Cheshire and doing 10 jobs a day…so I left and started my own business and have been happy ever since..I do six jobs a day and with the exception of the easter half term, they always seem to come in (the benefit of living in a built up area and mailshotting all of my old Hotpoints customers and still do, just to let them know that I’m still alive)…I love the people, the feeling of self worth and the money helps, I can honestly say that my working day goes so quickly, because I enjoy it so much…I reckon that I am going to work until I am at least 70 years old, although I already feel that age sometimes 😀
UKW has made me realise that there are other people out there who are treading the same path and when you are a one man band like me, it’s nice to know that other people are having the same experiences as you are, because as good as it is, it can still get a bit lonely, so it’s nice to read the threads here and feel a kinship.

ParticipantIt is the Arthur T that I was thinking of, I met him on numerous occasions, but heard his name regularly and I am really sorry to hear that he has passed on.
I know that he was very well thought of and FSE’s in our 737 office would often draw comparisons about how things were better for our Manchester counterparts under Arthur T, as opposed to Arthur Wignal on Merseyside.

Participantwould that be Arthur T who worked in the Bridal way in Netherton centre and then the stockport Heaton mersey service centre with malcolm Bargett and syd Jones?…sorry to hear that he passed away.

ParticipantI once went to a brand new Tumbler that the irate customer was threatening to dump in their front garden..she claimed that it had put oil all over her husbands and sons best shirts and cost her hundreds of pounds, she was very very annoyed and I was on the recieving end, but she was relieved to find that her lovely little girl had put a big black wax crayon in the tub….I mean, I was relieved..she was livid, and put my spare emergency undies back in the van…I think that she may have put the child up for adoption..lol

Participantgot to agree with you there electrofix, my wire coathanger has bailed me out so many times…I once had my wire coathanger removed from me, when I worked for Hotpoint when we were trying to achieve BS57540 and engineers were not allowed to have any kind of modified tools in thier arsenal…can you believe it..I replaced it as soon as I got home..its just to handy..I’m gonna patent it.

ParticipantLately, I have had a spate of forgetting to re- fit the blue paddles in the WMA washing machine drum after removing them to heat the bolts up on the drum support for removal, …I am just tidying up and normally spot them lying somewhere….some just clip in and these are ok, but some need to have the tab bent over to retain them and these are the ones that make you want to cry if you forget to fit them before assembling the tub.
