ParticipantThat is interesting
does the technology work with series wound motors as well as induction motors? since the induction motors are controlled by wave chopping and phase staggering as opposed to tacho pulses that give the velocity ripple that they talk about.I reckon that the accelerator used by airbags could be very fallible when used on a washing machine, that is not just relying on clothes being balanced, but also the speed of water vacating the tub and also the weight of washing, all of these factors will make the washer draw more current when trying to spin, even a dicky suspension leg could stop it spinning using this technology
It sounds too good to be true…can we by pass it?..lol
I was talking to a guy the other day who reckons that nokia is in cahoots with a major domestic appliance manufacturer and they are making units that will be in washing machines that will ring the manufacturer with a fault code when it goes faulty, so if they can get your phone number at point of sale, they can ring you up and tell you that your washing machine needs a service call.
they are supposibly trying to bring it into price range like the iMEMS accelerator for airbags.washtec
ParticipantRe: Doing jobs for friends…..a no no!!!!
This wasn’t for a friend but I gave free advice a few months ago to a woman who rang me on my mobile telephone, she said that her Hotpoint washer drier wasn’t filling up and could I give her an idea of likely cause and cost to repair, so I offered to call out for a nominal fee to give her an estimate, she declined the offer but continued to pick my brains (or lack of), at this point I told her that I thought that it was probably her solenoid valve and quoted her accordingly.
Three days later, I returned home from doing my calls and my wife says that she had booked me in for a recall to an irrate woman with a hotpoint washer drier that still was not working, Upon checking my diary I couldn’t believe it, so I rang the woman concerned and asked what the problem was, and she informed me that her husband had bought a 3 way solenoid valve(on my advise) and fitted it and it still was not working, and she firmly believed that I was now responsible to put it right at my own expense.
I told her that I was only to happy to call out but she would have to pay my labour charge, this she flatly refused to do, so making a concerted effort to twist the knife I offered her a full refund of any monies that she had paid to me, at this point she said that she was going to the citizens advice and put down the telephone.
I was onto the citizens advice quicker than she was because I was more than a bit concerned and explained the scenario to the advisor, and discovered that I had nothing to worry about.I never heard from her again but I will be more than careful next time I have anyone trying to pin me down over the telephone to make a diagnosis.

ParticipantMy solution would be to not work weekends and give yourself a bit of a break to be with your family, otherwise you may end up ill like your work colleagues.
I have a local engineer who even works sundays and late evenings, and I often think to myself how his customers must be laughing thier knackers off and thinking “What a mug, does this guy actually have a life” as he turns up on a Sunday morning or 8 oclock at night to fix thier washer. You can only do so much and for us one man bands I think that you must try to strike a balance between earning a living and actually living a life.
I generally find that having someone other than yourself (my wife in my case) answering the telephone helps to prevent me from being pressured by customers(always desperate..not) into overloading my daily workload, she has my diary and we find that customers really dont mind waiting a day or two, or even getting someone to sit in for a morning or an afternoon, to prevent me having to call at 6pm when they get home from work.Having said all that, I love what I do and its great to be in demand, but I for one will be enjoying a little quiet spell to be about whilst the kids are off school, but getting back to your problem, if you do at anytime go quiet and you have employees, then youve still got to pay thier wages holidays etc, now what could be more stressful than that.

ParticipantI always find that it goes quiet in the easter half term hols, I think that all of mummy and daddies money is being spent on keeping the kids occupied.

ParticipantIn the last 6 months I have had 2 servis M6003 washers destroyed by coins going through the tub, the first one was replaced at a concesionary price by my supplier and the second one I will be replacing this friday, it is only 5 months old and the customer is paying full price for a new bendix washer, she said to me that “I am only to pleased to see the back of that crappy washer”.
Are servis outer tubs so crap that they crack very easily, since she had her old currys 95 hotpoint for about 14 years?, over which time I emptied the sump of coins on numerous occassions, however we never had a cracked tub.

ParticipantI like my 6680 Tony, but I upgraded from an old motorola microtac flip phone, so it was a revelation for me to see how far mobile phone technology had advanced, I also liked the look of the samsung d600 but I like the look of anything shiny and new, I also use a symbian program with my phone called powernavigation and for any walkers or orienteers it is a killer application when used in conjunction with a bluetooth gps unit.

I use the nokia 6680 and the screen is perfect for satnav, but I would imagine that some mobile screens would be a bit small…however my 6680 is just right, one other thing about using bluetooth gps with a smartphone is that it is portable, my mate who fits waterbeds uses an Ipaq and wired gps aerial and he has to disconnect it all when leaving the van and there are wires all over the place.ps/ some of the latest smartphones have massive tft screens so I would have a good mooch around before making a decision, but I am more than happy with my set up.

ParticipantRe: Mobile phones… continued
Hi Robra, sorry about the delay getting back to you, I use my nokia 6680 with a bluetooth gps reciever and tom tom 5 mobile, the phone I get on contract, but the gps reciever was £45.00 offa ebay and the tom tom program came with the phone on a cd from vodafone.
It is really cool and can navigate you to a postcode, point of interest eg tourist attraction etc or just to a plain address, it has a 3d realtime display and also warns you of traffic cameras etc and to top it all off, I have Joanna Lumley giving turn by turn voice directions and when you get to your destination, she says “you have reached your destination darling”…its worth its weight in gold.

ParticipantRe: Nokia 6680.
if you go into tools > settings > phone > standby mode, you can allocate a key to access the voice recorder directly, I can record a voice message by pressing 2 buttons.
hope it helps
